Arsenal -Southampton Tip

On paper, the hosts go into the game as relatively clear favourites. Southampton have had a pretty poor season so far, picking up just three wins in their first 15 matchdays. Arsenal started the season on a poor note, winning one game after the other, but then lost three out of four. The pressure is on, because if the Gunners lose again after the 2-1 defeat at Everton FC on Saturday, we can definitely talk about the next crisis.

Arsenal form & balance check

After three defeats from the last four games, Arsenal FC are already in trouble again. With Liverpool FC and Manchester United, the Gunners had two top clubs in front of them in this period, but the supporters of the traditional capital club were hoping to finally get something tangible out of these difficult games after the previous successful weeks. The late 2-1 defeat at struggling Everton FC last weekend finally put a smile on their faces

Gunners squander their credit

Emile Smith-Rowe gave the Gunners a 1-0 lead in first-half injury time. Until shortly before the end, everything looked like a narrow away victory, but the late double strike by Richarlison (80th) and Demiray Gray (90.+2) put a spoke in Arsenal’s wheel. The Gunners have lost a lot of ground in the table as arch-rivals Tottenham (three wins in a row) have made perfect use of their slip-ups. With another defeat, Mikel Arteta’s team could slip further, in the worst case even to ninth place.

Southampton form & balance check

Southampton FC’s season so far has been a constant up and down affair. Of the first seven encounters, the Saints have lost three, the four duels between Matchday 2 and Matchday 5 all ended in a draw. Two more defeats followed before Ralph Hasenhüttl’s team finally managed to record their first success. The 1-0 home win against Leeds United was followed by a 2-2 draw against Burnley, before the away game at Watford FC and the home game against Aston Villa were both won 1-0. Most recently, two away defeats at Norwich (2-1) and Liverpool (4-0) were followed by two draws against Leicester (2-2) and Brighton (1-1).

Saints with lack of staying power

It is noticeable that there are big differences between home and away games for Southampton FC. At home, the Saints have suffered only one defeat in addition to five draws and two wins. Away from home, on the other hand, there have been four defeats in addition to one win and two draws, most recently two in a row.

The most recent 1-1 draw against Brighton & Hove was emblematic of the Saints’ season so far. Southampton were leading 1-0 for a long time, but Brighton equalised in the 90th minute. It was already the sixth time (!) in the current season that Southampton could not hold on to a lead. Twice they even lost after leading 1:0. The visitors urgently need to work on this problem.

Southampton facts & Analysis
 – 16 points from 15 games
 – Last played 1:1 against Brighton
 – Have failed to win 6 times after taking the lead
 – Winless in 4 games

Predicted line-up – last updated 9 Dec 2021

Grani Xhaka recently celebrated his comeback with the Gunners. However, he did not really convince, which is why he could possibly sit on the bench again against Southampton. Mohamed Elneny or Albert Lokonga could play in his place. The fitness of Emile Smith-Rowe is still questionable. He could again be replaced by Gabriel Martinelli, who is also questionable.

Southampton FC are missing Will Smallbone, Stuart Armstrong and Jan Bednarek. However, the starting eleven could remain unchanged compared to the 1-1 draw against Brighton.
