Tennis Today – Matches on Oct. 16
For my tennis tips today, the schedule is almost the same as yesterday’s: I’ll be analyzing all the matches for you from the crucial stages of the two tournaments in Shanghai and Wuhan—the ATP and WTA, respectively.
But I also have my eye on one specific match at the Challenger tournament in Santa Cruz. That’s because you can find these “exotic” bets at established bookmakers that specialize in tennis betting.
Tennis Picks Today – October 16, 2026: Who Will Win in Shanghai?
The structure of my tennis picks today is (almost) unchanged. I’ve included both quarterfinals at the ATP tournament in Shanghai as well as three matches at the WTA tournament in Wuhan.
In addition, I asked the bookmakers for their best odds on the match between Miguel and Dellien in Santa Cruz, Argentina.
That’s because I have a really good feeling about my bet on this Challenger tournament quarterfinal, which is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. German time at the earliest.
Shanghai Picks for Today, Oct. 16: Jodar – Ruud (8:30 a.m.)
Rafael Jódar and Casper Ruud will battle it out in the quarterfinals of the Shanghai Masters for a spot in the next round.
The No. 8-seeded Norwegian Ruud brings his usual tactical discipline to the hard court, but traditionally struggles on fast surfaces against aggressive and powerful opponents.
The upward trend of the young Spaniard Jódar (an impressive 14 wins in his last 19 matches) and his high efficiency on his own serve tip the scales in his favor. With varied shots and tremendous dynamism, he pushes Ruud deep into the defensive. There’s just more oomph behind his game right now!
My pick: Jodar with a higher ceiling!
Shanghai betting today: Medvedev – Paul (12:00 p.m.)
Daniil Medvedev and Tommy Paul face off in the quarterfinals of the Shanghai Masters. In their head-to-head record, Medvedev clearly leads 4–1 and has won all three of their hard-court matches.
The Russian is also impressing in Shanghai with a strong serving performance (85% of points won on first serve) and his formidable defensive wall deep behind the baseline.
Paul, for his part, plays a varied game, but on the fast hard court, he’ll be systematically worn down by Medvedev’s flat, deep shots and consistent returns.
My pick: Medvedev is playing great tennis again right now!
Shanghai picks today: Chwalińska – Sakkari (4:00 a.m.)
Sakkari enters the Wuhan quarterfinals as the favorite—a seasoned top player thanks to her tremendous baseline pressure and physicality—but she’ll need to be wary of Chwalińska’s versatile left-handed tactics and immense backspin-topspin variety.
Chwalińska is in the form of her life and celebrated her biggest career victory after her dominant two-set win over Iva Jovic (6-4, 6-1).
With an extremely high first-serve percentage, strong angle placement, and the fresh memory of her three-set victory over Sakkari at the French Open, the Polish player will once again force the Greek player into errors.
My pick: Chwalińska will come out on top!
Shanghai Prediction Today: Shnaider – Ostapenko (4:00 a.m.)
Diana Shnaider and Jeļena Ostapenko face off at the WTA tournament in Wuhan, where the Latvian power player immediately dictates the pace with her uncompromising attacking style and powerful baseline shots.
Shnaider, meanwhile, counters with unorthodox left-handed angles and strong defensive resilience. The Russian’s aggressive return power disrupts Ostapenko’s rhythm in the decisive moments, allowing her tactical versatility to pay off.
My pick: Shnaider narrowly ahead thanks to her versatility!
Wuhan Betting Today, Oct. 16: Svitolina – Kartal (4:00 a.m.)
Elina Svitolina and Sonay Kartal face off in Wuhan, with the British player stepping onto the court with her head held high after her spectacular performance against Jasmine Paolini.
Kartal had literally dismantled the Italian in the round of 16 with aggressive, offensive play and a flawless performance.
For her part, Svitolina brings great tactical maturity and tremendous consistency on the return on hard courts. The Ukrainian must control the pace from the start to stop Kartal’s heroic run and the qualifier’s newfound confidence.
My prediction: The match won’t be decided until the third set!
Wuhan, Oct. 16: Miguel – Dellien (4:00 p.m.)
Luís Augusto “Guto” Miguel and Hugo Dellien face off at the clay-court Challenger in Santa Cruz, where the experienced local hero Dellien controls the match thanks to his vast clay-court experience and great consistency in baseline rallies.
The Brazilian prodigy counters with varied pacing and plenty of youthful offensive drive, but on his home surface, he reaches his limits against Dellien’s physical resilience.
The Bolivian’s tactical maturity and clever angles ultimately tip the scales in the closely contested, tight moments.
My pick: Dellien draws on his wealth of experience!
