Tennis Today – Matches on August 30

To kick off the first round, I have several US Open tips in store for you today. I’ll share my personal prediction for each match. We won’t see any German players in the men’s singles until tomorrow, but Medvedev vs. Gaston makes up for it.
Tennis Tips Today – August 30, 2026: Round 1 in New York!

US Open Tips for Today, August 30: Medvedev vs. Gaston (7:30 p.m.)
Medvedev leads 1–0 so far (2021 Paris Masters). But let’s forget the past and focus on the present. Gaston is a natural-born tormentor on the court. The diminutive Frenchman constantly mixes in drop shots, varies the depth of his shots, and simply tries to wear his opponent down.
This is precisely where the Russian is prone to losing his cool, because Medvedev hates nothing more than having his rhythm at the baseline completely disrupted. However, over the course of a best-of-five set on the hard courts of New York, the Frenchman will ultimately fall short.
Medvedev may have had a mediocre preseason, but his enormous reach and flat shots from the baseline will leave Gaston gasping for air as the match progresses.
My prediction: 3-0, if Medvedev anticipates the drop-shot traps correctly!
US Open bets tonight: Lehecka – Carreno Busta (5:00 p.m.)
The Spaniard swept Lehecka in straight sets at this year’s French Open, but the first matchup a few months earlier on hard courts in Dubai went clearly to the Czech.
That’s exactly where the rub lies. Carreno Busta is a tenacious fighter, but on the fast US Open courts, Lehecka simply has more power in his groundstrokes.
Momentum favors the No. 18 seed: If Lehecka consistently lands his first serve, he’ll outpace the Spaniard and prevent Carreno Busta from ever getting into his clay-court rhythm.
My prediction: The court surface plays massively in Lehecka’s favor!
US Open today: Prizmic – Shevchenko (5:00 p.m.)
Prizmic hasn’t had it easy in recent weeks! But on a good day, what the 21-year-old Croatian does from the baseline borders on a strategy of attrition: brutal footwork, hardly any unforced errors, and shots with such depth that they drive any opponent to despair.
While Shevchenko brings more experience and more power to the table, his error rate on hard courts tends to spike whenever he’s under heavy pressure.
If Prizmic drags out the rallies and tests Shevchenko’s patience on the backhand, the match will swing in his favor. Shevchenko will try to keep the rallies ultra-short, but on the US Open courts, the Croatian is currently digging out almost every ball.
My prediction: Shevchenko won’t really test Prizmic!
US Open Prediction Today: Wong – Paul (6:30 p.m.)
What makes this match truly exciting is the stakes. On one side is 22-year-old Hong Kong youngster Wong, who has fought his way through the three qualifying rounds with brutal confidence.
He’s literally already warmed up the concrete at Louis Armstrong Stadium. On the other side lurks Tommy Paul—the No. 20 seed has the U.S. crowd behind him and plays an incredibly aggressive, versatile net game.
Anyone who thinks Paul will breeze through this match is underestimating the power of Wong’s serve. The qualifier has been extremely reliable at earning free points on his first serve in recent weeks.
However, if Paul puts pressure on Wong’s second serve with his usual venomous returns, the youngster will start to falter. Still, it shouldn’t be a straight 3-0 victory.
My pick: Wong takes a set!
US Open Betting Today, Aug. 30: Munar – Atmane (7:00 p.m.)
Atmane is blasting his way through the qualifying and Masters rounds this U.S. summer with absurd serving pressure, but completely loses his composure when an opponent manages to stand up to him!
Munar, on the other hand, embodies old-school clay-court tennis—nasty on the return, tactically disciplined—but once again outmatched today on fast New York hard courts when the Frenchman hammers the ball wildly into the corners right from the start.
Atmane relies on raw power as long as his arm holds up. But after a strong first set, he might run out of steam down the stretch.
My pick: Down the stretch, this is a fifty-fifty match!
US Open picks tonight: Samuel – Machac (7:00 p.m.)
The 23-year-old Samuel is making his main-draw debut at a Grand Slam after a stellar qualifying run. Samuel is coming off a red-hot run in qualifying and serves on the fast New York hard courts with plenty of potential for free points.
But Machac is a whole different level. The Czech has already proven this year just how brutally flat and fast his groundstrokes are when he’s in his rhythm.
His backhand down the line literally burns holes in his opponent’s defense on hard courts. Samuel has never played against a top-60 player on the pro circuit and will be left gasping for breath early on against Machac’s high baseline tempo.
If the Czech doesn’t give away any free points on his own serve and his fitness holds up, he might just cruise right through.
My pick: The only underdog bet I’m placing with confidence!
