Wimbledon, 2nd Round, Thursday, 06/07/2023
Tomas Barrios Vera can be happy with his winning record this year. He has won 39 of his 55 matches. In the process, he was on Challenger level almost all the time, but still managed to convince.
The 133 of the world now wants to know it in Wimbledon against David Goffin. Who will secure a ticket for the third round? I filter out the best odds in my Barrios Vera Goffin tip.
Barrios Vera is in good form. The Chilean put in a strong performance at the last tournament before Wimbledon, reaching the final in Poznan. Before that, he had already reached the semi-finals in Bratislava.
Both venues were still played on clay. Barrios Vera only came into contact with grass at Wimbledon, but very successfully. He won all three qualifying matches.
First, he beat Evgeny Donskoy. Then the 114th ranked player in the world, Rinky Hijikata, had to pull out of the tournament. In a five-set thriller, he kept the upper hand against Thiago Seyboth Wild.
In the main draw, he was welcomed by Sebastian Baez, who had to admit defeat after four rounds. The 25-year-old had ten break points in the process.
Can he now pose a threat to the former world number seven? David Goffin at least still has the favourite odds of 1.36, at 3.20 the Barrios Vera win odds can be added to the betting slip at Bet365.
Both players have never met before. On grass, the Belgian has had the much better success. In Halle, he played out the final against a certain Roger Federer in 2019.
At Wimbledon, a few weeks later, it went to the quarter-finals, had to admit defeat in this round to the perennial winner of the traditional tournament, Novak Djokovic. Goffin also made it to the last eight once again in 2022.
Despite the notable results, the fast surface is the weakest on paper in his career, with a 57 per cent win rate.
The 2022 quarter-final was definitely one of the highlights along with the tournament win in Morocco. Otherwise, not much went together in the last two years of tennis.
Goffin is now only ranked 123 in the world. His performance level from his golden years only rarely flashes up. Of the last ten matches, he has won only two without losing a set.
Fabian Marozsan, who played his first grass court matches this year and moved into the main draw as a lucky loser, also managed to take a set off Goffin in the first round.
However, the Belgian presented otherwise good values, brought through 85 and 73 percent of the points after first and second service and played himself seven successful breaks out of 13 chances, while the Hungarian had only two opportunities.
Nevertheless, I can very well imagine that the well-formed Barrios Vera will offer Goffin strong resistance and can win at least one set.
For this expected course of play, the 1.55 odds for over 3.5 sets in the match offer themselves.
If Barrios’ grass matches are anything to go by, a bet could also be placed on over 0.5 tiebreaks. In his first four matches on the green, there have been four 7-6 set outcomes. Betano provides 1.62 odds.
My Barrios Vera Goffin Tip
Barrios Vera has gained a lot of confidence in recent matches and will face a Goffin who can’t recall his good game consistently. Does Barrios Vera have a chance?
I expect a very close match. On grass, he is an unpleasant opponent, despite his limited match experience. He won at least one set in his last ten matches on grass.
But Goffin, as the favourite, will probably not finish the match without winning a set. Therefore, I recommend the tip for this match that will be played over 3.5 sets
