US Open, 1st Round, Tuesday, 30.08.2022
What hammer lots for the German starters at the US Open 2022! In the absence of Alexander Zverev, it would be a big surprise if a player in black-red-gold would even make it to the 2nd round.
Daniel Altmaier also had to swallow after the draw. In my Altmaier Sinner tip, I now reveal why I believe the German will put up a tough fight!
Admittedly, it couldn’t have been worse for the German players in New York. Oscar Otte will meet Hubert Hurkacz, Peter Gojowczyk Holger Rune. And Daniel Altmaier? He got Jannik Sinner!
Should one of this trio actually advance, it would not be a surprise, but even a real sensation. Daniel Altmaier is playing in the main draw of the US Open for the first time ever, and then against one of the very best.
Three first-round exits, these dismal results are the result of his year on the Grand Slam stage so far in 2022. In Paris and Wimbledon it was particularly disappointing, because with Jaume Munar and Mikael Ymer his opponents were actually on a par.
The 23-year-old wanted to recommend himself for the US Open in Winston-Salem, but the 1-6, 4-6 against Soon-woo Kwon quickly showed that his form was not right. In Cincinnati, he was eliminated directly in the qualifying round, but at least he won one set against Lorenzo Musetti.
On Mallorca, a good two months ago, Altmaier last won a match in the main draw and was even able to send two very good players home, Dusan Lajovic and Sebastian Baez.
Since then, however, things have been much worse. Since he will be presented with a real world class man in Jannik Sinner, for the very first time by the way, Betano is of course not expecting a surprise.
13.00 to 1.03 – the odds couldn’t be clearer. For Jannik Sinner, however, this also means that everyone expects him to win quickly and easily. The 21-year-old does not always manage to bring the required consistency onto the court.
In Cincinnati, it is perfectly acceptable to fail in three sets against Felix Auger-Aliassime, but Sinner had already had difficulties against Thanasi Kokkinakis before and only got further in the third set.
And yet: Whenever the young man from South Tyrol is eliminated, it is actually the absolute top stars of the tennis scene who are to blame. One can hardly remember an elimination against a rival like Daniel Altmaier, and that is by no means meant disrespectfully.
Sinner had a lot of problems in Cincinnati with his break chances. He used eight in three matches, but it could have been as many as 30! Can Altmaier perhaps profit from this?
Especially at Grand Slams, the Italian doesn’t always manage to put in his best performances. In New York, for example, he got past the opening hurdle for the first time in 2021. Nevertheless, this year he has always made it at least to the round of 16.
My Altmaier Sinner Tip
It would have to be with the devil if Daniel Altmaier could really prevail against Jannik Sinner on Tuesday evening. The German is inferior to his opponent in all respects, or so the bookmakers decide.
So I can’t help but side with Sinner in my analysis. Since the South Tyrolean has had a few wobbles in the last few months, I can imagine a few games.
So I’m betting: Sinner wins by more than 26.5 games!
