After all, what could be better for self-confidence than a trophy to set the perfect mood? That’s why several top stars have settled down at the Masters in Cincinnati, including Rafael Nadal, who is finally back on court.
The schedule on Tuesday has a few real showstoppers in it, for example Pablo Carreno-Busta, the champion from Montreal, has to serve. Jannik Sinner and Nick Kyrgios will also be looking to put in their best performances.
Unfortunately, we are looking in vain for German starters in our tennis tips today, but fortunately there are enough other stars on site. And: The Masters seems to hold surprises again, because Matteo Berrettini is already out!

Jannik Sinner has actually been playing strong for months, but when it comes down to it, the nerves still fail the young Italian too often. Now he has to play Thanasi Kokkinakis in the 1st round and can only be clearly favoured.
For Taylor Fritz, the last tournaments did not go as desired, too often he already failed in the first rounds. He should therefore not make the mistake of underestimating Sebastian Baez, his opening opponent.
Nick Kyrgios was considered the top favourite in Montreal, but even his top form of the last few months still allows for weaknesses now and then. Has he recovered so well from the loss to Hubert Hurkacz that he will now prevail against Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina?
Not many had expected Pablo Carreno-Busta to be on top in Montreal. After this irresistible performance he wants to deliver in Cincinnati as well, Miomir Kecmanovic must not become a problem yet.
It should be close between Aslan Karatsev and Diego Schwartzman, both are in similar shape. At some bookmakers, the odds are even in the exact same range!

Tennis tips today 16.08.: Thanasi Kokkinakis – Jannik Sinner (17:00)
In Umag, Jannik Sinner had presented himself unbeatable, dismantling Carlos Alcaraz in the final. His performances in Montreal were a bit more surprising. 2-6, 4-6 – against the later winner Pablo Carreno Busta he was out early.
The South Tyrolean, who celebrates his 21st birthday today, is also dragging his lack of consistency through the current year. In Cincinnati, he never made it past the 3rd round, now he first has to prevail against Thanasi Kokkinakis.
1.20 to 4.50, the bookies see little room for surprises here. The Australian usually cheers in doubles with Nick Kyrgios, if he competes alone, the results are much less strong. But: In his only appearance in Cincinnati in 2015, he already beat an Italian in round 1 with Fabio Fognini!
The retirement of Benoit Paire and a close 7-5, 1-6, 7-5 against Ilya Ivashka have put Kokkinakis in the current main draw. The last time he won two matches in one tournament was in Genoa in May.

Two out in the last 16? Taylor Fritz had actually imagined his preparations for the US Open quite differently after his quarter-final at Wimbledon. Will it be better in Cincinnati of all places?
He has only made it past the first hurdle once here, which doesn’t sound like his favourite tournament at all. In the first duel with Sebastian Baez, who is a full 26 centimetres taller than his opponent, he is more than clearly ahead with odds of 1.20 to 4.50. But be careful: the small Argentinean can be a big hit.
But beware: the small Argentine can annoy any opponent in the world and will soon crack the Top 30. After the Bastaad final, however, he slid into a crisis and was eliminated in the first round five times in a row!
Most recently in Montreal, he was unlucky with the draw and faced Nick Kyrgios directly. He sold himself quite well at 4-6, 4-6, and now he wants to keep up at his very first Cincinnati Masters.

Tennis tips today 16.08.: Nick Kyrgios – Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina (19:30)
He’s back in the top 30! Nick Kyrgios has been climbing up the rankings one place at a time for months now, and yet even he hasn’t been immune to disappointment. After the double triumph in Washington, he was the top favourite for Montreal.
He lost 6-7, 7-6, 1-6 to Hubert Hurkacz in the quarter-finals and was completely depleted in the third set. Quite surprising, because before that he went through the tournament with enthusiasm and also gave Daniil Medvedev no chance.
In Cincinnati he is once again one of the favourites for the title, wants to reach the final for a second time after 2017. 1.20 to 4.40, he is clearly ahead in the first duel with Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. His opponent is not in strong shape, has not been able to surprise positively for a long time.
He has won four matches since Wimbledon, and since his coup against Hubert Hurkacz on the sacred grass, things have not been going well. Fittingly, he has yet to celebrate a victory in Cincinnati.

Tennis tips today 16.08.: Pablo Carreno Busta – Miomir Kecmanovic (19:40 Uhr)
Was this the strongest tournament of his life? Pablo Carreno Busta surprised everyone in Montreal. He threw Matteo Berrettini, Holger Rune, Jannik Sinner and Jack Draper outright, then beat Daniel Evans and Hubert Hurkacz in three sets.
After 3-6 in the first set, he sensationally came back against Hurkacz in the final, winning the trophy 6-3, 6-3. After this success, he is naturally also under observation in Cincinnati, where he has already reached the quarter-finals twice, including in 2021.
With odds of 1.70 to 2.10, it looks tight in the 1st round, because Miomir Kecmanovic is anything but a weak opponent. In Canada, however, the Serb did not succeed at all, losing 1-6, 5-7 directly to Botic van de Zandschulp.
More than two won matches were hardly feasible for him this year, fittingly he failed in Cincinnati 2021 right at the start against Benoit Paire. His low odds against Carreno Busta are therefore quite surprising.

Tennis tips today 16.08.: Aslan Karatsev – Diego Schwartzman (22:10 Uhr)
Aslan Karatsev was nearly eliminated in the 1st round, just barely holding his own in a 7-5, 7-5 loss to Brandon Nakashima. Lucky, because the American only used one of his five break chances.
After three 1st round exits, Karatsev at least managed to avert a fourth quick defeat. Now he meets an opponent he has already beaten twice. In 2021 he won both duels against Diego Schwartzman.
Both come in at an approximate 1.90 on Tuesday, so they are evenly matched. Schwartzman had similar problems in his 1st round match, beating Alex Molcan 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.
After the French Open, he never managed to win two matches at a tournament again. A yield that is quite unsatisfactory for a world number 16. Incidentally, the little Argentine has never reached more than a quarter-final in Cincinnati.
