A third exit in the first round in a row, that should not happen. A year ago he was eliminated in the round of 16 in Washington, but his opponent then was also Jannik Sinner. On Tuesday, he will meet Ilya Ivashka for the very first time.
The Belarusian is five places ahead of him and was able to convince in Atlanta with the semi-final. Earlier in Mallorca, he also showed that his way leads upwards when he defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas 4-6, 4-6.
For Ivashka, too, a round of 16 in Washington is the best result so far. So both players can celebrate the best result in the current tournament in a direct duel, at least the one who also wins.

After his strong performances at Wimbledon and reaching the quarter-finals, David Goffin has taken a bit of a break, now taking part in the Washington tournament. Will he be able to top the round of the best eight, achieved in 2018?
His first opponent, Jack Sock, has been defeated by Goffin in all three direct duels so far. In 2013, 2016 and 2017, the matches were so long ago that they may no longer have the greatest relevance.
