Simona Halep knows the feeling of celebrating on the hallowed turf of Wimbledon. Knows how it feels to be the best female tennis player in the world. But the Romanian has also had to fight the dark side in recent years.
Now she seems to be back to her old self, and what better way to crown this development than with what is probably the most important title in tennis of all? After her victory at Wimbledon 2019, she returns for the first time this year – and how.
Her results resemble a true show of power. Now that top favourite Iga Swiatek has long since been eliminated, the trophy could be within her grasp. Halep did not drop a single set and played her strongest match in the round of 16.
Against Paula Badosa, the current world No. 4, she managed a brilliant 6-1, 6-2! 89% won points on the first serve, one break chance granted and this defended, you can’t play any better than that.
Halep had come up trumps before, although her opponents had not really been strong in the first three rounds. Magdalena Frech, Kristen Flipkens and Karolina Muchova had already been defeated.
In Homburg, Halep had to withdraw before the semi-final against Bianca Andreescu in order to prevent a minor injury from becoming too serious. A move that obviously paid off.
No wonder that the bookmakers tested are banking on her on Wednesday. With odds of 1.40 to 2.85, she is ahead, albeit only just. She has faced Amanda Anisimova three times so far.
She lost at the French Open in 2019, but then returned the favour twice. Two years ago she was victorious 6-0, 6-1 at Roland Garros, fittingly the two met on grass just a few weeks ago.
In Bad Homburg, in fact, the quarter-finals brought them together, Halep putting on a real show of power. 6-2, 6-1, Anisimova had no chance. Now the American quickly gets the chance to equalise.
She is the underdog in the second Grand Slam quarter-final of her career, but she has surprised often enough. Her results at Wimbledon? Good, but not on a par with Halep’s, even considering her opponents.
She started confidently with a 6-3, 6-4 against Yue Yuan, a little later against Lauren Davies she needed a third set at 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. The big surprise finally came for Anisimova in round 3.
She won against co-favourite Cori Gauff 6-7, 6-2, 6-1, coming back brutally strong after trailing. She saved her strength in the round of 16 against Harmony Tan, who defeated Serena Williams.
The 6-2, 6-3 win opened the door to the round of the best eight. The 20-year-old obviously saves her best values for the front rounds, winning 80% of her first serve points.
My Halep Anisimova tip
That Simona Halep would play so incredibly strong at Wimbledon. The Romanian plays like she’s in her prime and humbles the world number 4 in the round of sixteen.
Amanda Anisimova’s results have been mixed, but of course she should not be underestimated since her win against Cori Gauff at the latest. However, I can’t imagine that Simona Halep will let anything go wrong and so I’m betting:
