Tennis Tips Today – Today’s Matches on August 6
At the Canadian Open, the ATP and WTA tournaments are entering the crucial phase. This is also evident from the fact that the daily odds boosts are becoming more generous and numerous with each round.
As long as the tournament bracket allows, I’ve once again opted for three matchups per singles tournament in my tennis tips for today. Together, we’ll take a closer look at which specific tennis bets should be prioritized.
Tennis Tips Today – August 6, 2026: Montreal Preview

I’ve picked out three women’s matches, of which Svitolina vs. Potapova is, of course, the most explosive. After all, it’s a Ukrainian-Russian matchup (even though Potapova now competes for Austria).
In the men’s draw, I’ve also taken a closer look at the Hanfmann vs. Borges match, among others. After all, the Karlsruhe native is one of the last remaining Germans in the ATP tournament in Montreal.
Montreal Picks for Today, August 6: Darderi – Shang (6:30 p.m.)
Shang Juncheng caused a major upset in Round 1: He knocked out 10th-seeded Andrey Rublev after a dramatic three-set thriller (7–5, 4–6, 7–6). It was already his fifth career victory against a Top 20 player.
Shang’s left-handed sprints, his tremendous agility at the baseline, and his ability to apply pressure on fast hard courts make him a highly dangerous opponent on hard courts. Luciano Darderi, on the other hand, is primarily a proven clay-court specialist.
Although the Italian is highly ranked in the ATP (Top 25) and benefited in the first round from Canadian Gabriel Diallo’s withdrawal, his record on hard courts reveals significant weaknesses.
While Darderi boasts a win rate of just under 68% on clay, his career win rate on fast hard courts is a meager 26%. Shang, on the other hand, is completely in his element on hard courts.
The Chinese left-hander has gained a huge boost in confidence following his victory over Rublev and brings the perfect mix of baseline speed and angle play to consistently overpower Darderi’s sweeping shots on hard courts.
My pick: The Chinese player has the edge!
Montreal Picks for Today, August 6: Lehecka – Blockx (6:30 p.m.)
Jiri Lehecka has been playing excellent tennis on hard courts in 2026 (including reaching the Miami Masters final). In Round 1, the Czech showed absolutely no weakness and swept his compatriot Vit Kopriva off the court 6-4, 6-2.
Lehecka impresses with his physical presence, an extremely reliable first serve, and a rock-hard, flat forehand. Once he gets into his rhythm, he marches uncompromisingly through rallies and puts opponents under pressure early on.
On the other hand, Alexander Blockx has been making giant strides toward the world’s elite. The young Belgian brings cutting-edge athleticism, a dynamic baseline game, and an incredible amount of self-confidence to the table.
For Blockx, this match is the perfect stage to make a statement against an established Top 15 player. Facing Lehecka’s massive power, the Belgian will be seriously tested—especially on his return—but I still think he has what it takes in this matchup!
My pick: Blockx could force a deciding set!
Montreal Picks for Today, August 6: Hanfmann – Borges (6:30 p.m.)
Hanfmann is currently riding a real wave of success in Canada. After his qualifying success and a commanding three-set victory over Benjamin Bonzi, the 34-year-old pulled off a massive upset in the second round!
He knocked the No. 6-seeded Italian Flavio Cobolli out of the tournament in two hard-fought tiebreak sets (7–6, 7–6)! Hanfmann served extremely well, made the most of his raw power, and showed remarkable composure in the decisive moments.
When he can bring that power to his first serve, he’s extremely difficult to play against on fast hard courts.
Nuno Borges, however, has proven to be an extremely tough opponent so far in 2026. The Portuguese player has long since established himself in the Top 40 and plays his game from the baseline with impressive composure.
In Montreal, following an opening-round victory over Kovacevic, he cruised past Argentine Tomás Martín Etcheverry 6-4, 6-2 in the second round. Although Borges has excellent footwork, I still see the Karlsruhe native with a slight edge in a close match!
My pick: There could be plenty of drama!
Toronto Picks Today, Aug. 6: Svitolina – Potapova (4:00 p.m.)
Svitolina had to go the extra mile in her previous round: In a nail-biter lasting nearly three hours against Jéssica Bouzas Maneiro, she turned the match around after falling behind in the first set and prevailed 6–7, 7–6, 6–4.
Svitolina is a master of fighting spirit—she uses her excellent footwork to close out the court, varies her shot lengths superbly, and forces her opponents to take extra risks.
On hard courts, the Ukrainian already claimed the title in Toronto in 2017 and knows the court conditions like the back of her hand. Potapova, on the other hand, really turned it on in the second round, giving Romania’s Elena-Gabriela Ruse no chance in a straight-sets victory, 2–0.
However, under sustained pressure, Potapova often struggles with an inconsistent error rate, which could prove to be her undoing again this time at the end of a long and close match.
My pick: It looks like a 2-1 win for the Ukrainian!
Toronto Picks for Today, August 6: Kostyuk – Keys (4:00 p.m.)
Madison Keys is coming in with a lot of momentum. In her opening match, she gave Croatian Antonia Ruzic absolutely no chance, winning 6-1, 6-2, and setting the tone on her own serve.
Keys has been a force to be reckoned with on fast US and Canadian hard courts for years: Her first serve consistently lands flat and heavy, and her whipping forehand leaves opponents with no time to react. When Keys keeps her error rate low, she simply picks up the pace to a level that’s impossible to match.
Marta Kostyuk, on the other hand, is a born fighter and brings excellent athleticism to the court. The Ukrainian plays with intense emotion, moves fantastically, and relies on aggressive footwork that allows her to launch deadly counterattacks when under pressure.
All things considered, however, their head-to-head record clearly favors the American: The two have faced off on the Tour at Wimbledon, among other places, where Keys prevailed convincingly. Will it be the same this time?
My pick: Keys in three long sets!
Toronto Picks Today, Aug. 6: Golubic – Swiatek (4:00 p.m.)
Iga Swiatek enters the match as the clear favorite. After her dominant first-round victory over Sara Bejlek, the Polish player has proven that she hits her stride immediately on North American hard courts.
Swiatek impresses with extremely quick footwork, an inimitable topspin on her forehand, and an exceptionally high percentage of return points won. If she keeps up the pace, she’ll push any opponent meters behind the baseline.
Her opponent, Viktorija Golubic, has been playing a rock-solid tournament in Toronto so far, though. The Swiss player has worked her way through the rallies with her deft touch and one-handed backhand. So this could be an exciting match!
But even though Golubic’s slice game is always a tricky element on hard courts, the bottom line is that Swiątek simply brings too much speed and power to get bogged down in grueling, attritional matches for long.
My pick: Swiatek keeps her cool!
