Tennis Tips Today – Today’s Matches on August 5
For my “Tennis Tips Today” column, I’ve once again picked out three matches each from the ATP tournament in Montreal and the WTA tournament in Toronto. If you want to follow my predictions exactly, the best way to do so—completely risk-free—is with a free bet.
I’ve put together some promising tennis bets for today, Wednesday. Of course, special attention is focused on the match featuring local hero Auger-Aliassime. The Canadian will be cheered on frenetically by his compatriots as he faces Droguet.

Montreal Picks for Today, August 5: Mejia – Musetti (6:30 p.m.)
For Nicolas Mejia, reaching this round in Canada is already a huge milestone. The Colombian battles tirelessly through rallies, brings immense passion to the court, and has shown in previous rounds that he can capitalize on opportunities with clinical precision.
However, against world-class opponents on hard court—without a truly powerful serve—his game quickly reaches its physical and tactical limits.
Lorenzo Musetti, on the other hand, brings pure tennis finesse to the court. With his versatile one-handed backhand, precision drop shots, and excellent depth control, the Italian can vary the pace at will and throw opponents off their game.
After solid performances in Washington, Musetti is gaining more and more momentum on hard courts and has significantly more shots in his repertoire than Mejia.
As impressive as the Colombian’s success story has been so far, the difference in class and quality is simply too great here. Musetti will dominate the match from the baseline with his angled shots and take control of the match quickly.
My pick: Musetti will make short work of this one!
Montreal Picks for Today, August 5: Droguet – Auger-Aliassime (6:30 p.m.)
With his powerful first serve, athleticism, and crisp forehand, Auger-Aliassime has all the advantages on his side on fast hard courts.
Playing in front of a home crowd, “FAA” is eager to advance deep into the tournament and get the crowd fired up from the very first minute.
Frenchman Titouan Droguet, on the other hand, has struggled his way through qualifying and the first round (including a nail-biter against Luca Van Assche).
While Droguet brings a solid baseline game to the table and showed in Montpellier in February that he can at least take a set from Auger-Aliassime in a closely contested three-set match, he simply lacks the consistency needed to compete against the absolute elite on the big Masters stage.
In Montreal, Auger-Aliassime’s role as the local hero also provides extra motivation. Droguet will certainly fight for every point, but over the full distance, he lacks the tools to withstand the Canadian’s serving and offensive pressure.
My pick: Auger-Aliassime will wrap this up in less than 2 hours!
Montreal Picks Today, August 5: Tsitsipas – Fonseca (6:30 p.m.)
Tsitsipas had to go through the grueling qualifying process in Montreal for the first time in years, but he gained confidence there and, following his tournament victory in Gstaad, reinforced his upward momentum with a solid first-round win over Martin Damm.
With his heavy topspin game, powerful forehand, and plenty of experience, Tsitsipas is looking to make his way back to the top of the world rankings. On fast courts, however, his one-handed backhand remains a vulnerability when under constant pressure.
That’s exactly where Joao Fonseca comes into play. The young Brazilian is currently one of the hottest prospects on the ATP Tour; he enters this match as the seeded player and doesn’t hesitate for a second to fire the ball at incredible speed.
Fonseca plays with extreme courage, takes risks from the baseline, and has already defeated Tsitsipas in three close sets in their previous Davis Cup match.
Tsitsipas brings the advantage of extra match practice from his qualifying rounds in Montréal, but Fonseca’s raw power will force the Greek onto the defensive from the very first minute. If the Brazilian keeps his error rate low, he’ll have all the advantages on his side here on the hard court.
My pick: This could be a real nail-biter!
Toronto Picks Today, Aug. 5: Kasatkina – Rybakina (4:00 p.m.)
Kasatkina is the undisputed “wall” on the WTA Tour—she varies her pace fantastically, returns what feels like 99% of all shots, and constantly forces aggressive players to think twice and overhit.
On hard courts, however, her serve is a constant vulnerability against power hitters. That’s exactly Elena Rybakina’s specialty. The Kazakhstani is one of the biggest serving powerhouses and most formidable offensive players in women’s tennis.
When her first serve lands and her whipping forehand is on point, Rybakina closes out rallies in a flash.
For Rybakina, though, this is her first match on hard court since the grass-court season. Could that be why she’s lacking rhythm?
Incidentally, their head-to-head history has already featured several wild, grueling battles (including a legendary three-set thriller at the Canadian Masters). That’s why I can easily imagine another close match this time around!
My pick: Rybakina slightly off her rhythm after the break!
Toronto picks for today, Aug. 5: Stephens – Bencic (4:00 p.m.)
Belinda Bencic, seeded No. 12, enters this match as the clear favorite. The Swiss player is an absolute master at hitting the ball extremely early in its ascent and immediately redirecting the pace of her opponent’s shots.
Sloane Stephens, on the other hand, warmed up impressively in the first round with a commanding two-set victory over Solana Sierra. When Stephens brings her enthusiasm and body language to the court, her footwork and counter-attack defense are still among the best on the tour.
Her strategy against power players like Bencic is clear: absorb the pace, mix in deep topspin shots, and wait for Bencic to take too many risks as she moves forward.
In the past, Stephens has often given Bencic a hard time (including in her straight-set victory in Guadalajara). However, Bencic currently brings significantly greater consistency and power to the table.
Stephens will certainly put up a fight and land her own jabs, but the Swiss player’s perfect timing on her shots on hard courts is likely to tip the scales in the end.
My pick: The Swiss player will prevail 6-4, 6-4!
Toronto Picks Today, Aug. 5: Parks – Eala (4:00 p.m.)
The WTA tournament in Toronto features, among other matches, an exciting showdown between American Alycia Parks and top Filipino talent Alexandra Eala!
In their head-to-head record, Parks leads 1–0 after defeating Eala in three sets at the Australian Open.
The match promises a thrilling contrast in playing styles: Parks relies on brute power, aces, and high-risk play, but is prone to double faults and inconsistent performance. Eala, on the other hand, excels with smart court vision, refined technique, and patience in long rallies.
The problem with Parks: Her high inconsistency and double-fault rate make her extremely susceptible to emotional roller coasters. Alexandra Eala, on the other hand, brings extreme finesse and high tennis IQ to the table.
My pick: Alexandra Eala keeps her cool!
