Tennis Tips Today – Today’s Matches on August 4
As part of my tennis tips today, I’m once again taking a look at three matches at the ATP tournament in Montreal and three more at the WTA women’s tournament in Toronto. You can replicate my tennis bets at any time using a free bet.
Especially in the women’s Canadian Open, I’ve marked the matches featuring the absolute superstars—all with 2-0 records—as my picks. After all, these players in particular don’t seem to pose a serious threat to the success of my betting slip!
Tennis Tips Today – August 4, 2026: Montreal Preview

Montreal Picks Today, Aug. 4: Chan – Tirante (6:30 p.m.)
In Montreal, young Canadian local hero Duncan Chan faces what is likely the biggest challenge of his career so far: He’ll take on the seasoned Argentine ATP pro Thiago Agustín Tirante.
For Duncan Chan, this home match is a massive stage. In front of his home crowd, the young Canadian is eager to play aggressively, keep up with the pace, and land decisive blows with bold attacks.
At this Masters level, however, the competition is extremely tough: Against established top-100 players, he simply lacks the necessary consistency in long rallies over the long run.
Thiago Agustín Tirante, on the other hand, is a true workhorse from the baseline. The Argentine has long since established himself on the ATP Tour and brings tremendous power, baseline consistency, and mental toughness to the court.
Tirante also plays with immense tactical discipline and is brilliant at absorbing his opponent’s pressure and controlling the rallies until the opponent makes a mistake on the other side of the net.
As beautiful as the setting is for the young Canadian, the difference in class and experience is simply too great here. Tirante will stoically dictate the match from the start and barely give Chan a chance to catch his breath.
My pick: Tirante will make short work of this!
Montreal Picks Today, August 4: Popyrin – Burruchaga (6:30 p.m.)
At the Montreal Masters, Australian Alexei Popyrin and Argentine Román Andrés Burruchaga will face off for the first time in their careers—and this matchup pits contrasting playing philosophies against each other!
Popyrin brings the classic power needed for fast hard courts: a towering serve, a massive forehand, and a willingness to keep rallies as short as possible.
When his serve consistently lands in the court, the Australian is extremely difficult to break on fast surfaces.
However, Popyrin repeatedly struggles with stretches of high error rates when his first-serve percentage drops. As a South American, Román Andrés Burruchaga has historically felt most comfortable on clay, but he has established himself at the ATP level and moves with exceptional agility.
He seeks out long baseline rallies, tries to absorb his opponent’s pace, and patiently waits for a careless attacking shot. On the fast hard courts of Montréal, however, it will be a Herculean task for Burruchaga to return Popyrin’s first serve effectively.
When Popyrin dictates the match with his serve, the Australian’s unbridled power prevails. Burruchaga’s tenacity, however, ensures that sets aren’t decided so quickly in a one-sided affair.
My prediction: At least one tiebreak!
Montreal Predictions Today, August 4: Svajda – Shapovalov (6:30 p.m.)
When Denis Shapovalov steps onto the court, a spectacle is guaranteed—for better or for worse. The Canadian left-hander brings incredible power to the court with his world-class one-handed backhand and aggressive serve.
When “Shapo” is on fire and firing his cannons from every angle, his opponent barely stands a chance.
On the fast hard courts in Montreal, he certainly has the crowd behind him, but on an off day, he also tends to get in his own way with a flood of unforced errors.
Zachary Svajda is the exact opposite: an extremely disciplined, calm counter-punter who plays nearly flawlessly from the baseline. The American doesn’t let his opponent’s pace overwhelm him easily; he moves fantastically and usually waits stoically for his chances.
If Svajda manages to weather Shapovalov’s initial onslaught and draw the Canadian into long, patient rallies, it will be a nerve-wracking match for Shapovalov—and that’s exactly what I expect!
My pick: Svajda could win as a slight underdog!
Toronto Picks Today, Aug. 4: Sabalenka – Uchijima (4:00 p.m.)
At the WTA event in Montreal, top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka faces Japan’s Moyuka Uchijima—and this looks like it’ll be a very one-sided affair!
Sabalenka is one of the most dominant power hitters on the WTA Tour. When the world’s top-ranked player takes the court on fast hard courts, the yellow ball flies past her opponents with incredible force.
While Moyuka Uchijima has undoubtedly fought her way through the early rounds with tenacity (including a solid victory over Cristina Bucsa), she’s up against a player in a completely different league here.
The Japanese player can hold her own in rallies from the baseline, but she lacks both the speed and the physical power to push Sabalenka out of her comfort zone.
The two already faced off at the French Open—back then, Sabalenka swept past Uchijima 6-2, 6-2 in just 60 minutes.
My pick: A quick one!
Toronto Picks Today, Aug. 4: Svitolina – Bouzas Maneiro (4:00 p.m.)
For Bouzas Maneiro, Svitolina is slowly but surely becoming her absolute worst nightmare. In their head-to-head record, the Ukrainian already leads comfortably 3–0—whether on hard courts in Cincinnati or on European clay in Rouen and Rome.
So far, Svitolina has shown the Spaniard her limits in every match and hasn’t dropped a single set.
On hard courts, Svitolina brings exactly the complete package needed to wear down players like Bouzas Maneiro: outstanding physicality, extremely precise passing shots, and tactical composure when the going gets tough.
While Bouzas Maneiro has firmly established herself in the top 50 and plays with gusto, she simply lacks the power shots needed to end rallies quickly against players of Svitolina’s caliber.
My pick: This one will be a quick affair, too!
Toronto Picks for Today, August 4: Vekic – Golubic (4:00 p.m.)
Donna Vekić brings pure power tennis to Toronto: a thunderous first serve, extremely flat baseline shots, and a relentless determination to dictate rallies early on. Her upcoming opponent, however, isn’t without a chance!
After all, in the first round, Golubic already proved her timing is on point with her hard-fought two-set victory over Kimberly Birrell.
With her beautiful one-handed backhand, venomous backspin slices, and great touch, the Swiss player varies the pace like almost no one else on the tour.
Golubic deliberately tries to disrupt the rhythm of her power-hitting opponents, luring them to the net with short balls and tempting them into easy errors. This strategy could work against Vekić!
By the way: Their head-to-head record is tied at 1-1. While Golubic came out on top on grass in 2023, Vekić prevailed in a real three-set thriller in Beijing in 2024.
My prediction: Could easily go to a third set!
