French Open, 1st round, Monday, 27.05.2024
He is one of the absolute top favorites, is the strongest player of 2024 – and yet nobody knows exactly how he is! Jannik Sinner has to prove himself at the French Open and show that he has his aches and pains under control.
On Monday, he will face a player from the top 50, but he won’t get a free ride into the second round. The bookmakers take the classic view: the South Tyrolean is miles ahead of his opponent.
In my Eubanks Sinner tip, I will now examine exactly what the outsider is capable of and tell you why I am leaning towards the tie-break bet due to Sinner’s opaque state of health
Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, Jannik Sinner – a trio that will share the role of tournament favorites at the French Open 2024, closely followed by Alexander Zverev! While the German will face Rafael Nadal in Round 1, Jannik Sinner has a somewhat easier draw.
The Italian, who could become the new number 1 in the tennis world in Paris depending on his opponents’ performances, has puzzled us a little in recent days.
Of course, what he has played this year cannot be praised highly enough. Whether it was the Australian Open or various other tournaments, the winner almost always ended up being Jannik Sinner.
At the beginning of the month in Madrid, having just beaten Karan Khachanov in three sets, he suddenly withdrew from his quarter-final because his body no longer wanted to play.
Sinner has only recently returned to training; it was his hip that was hurting. And of course everyone is now asking themselves the question: how fit is the 22-year-old? He himself immediately tried to dampen expectations a little.
According to Sinner, you can’t work miracles in ten days. He still has a score to settle with Roland Garros anyway, as he lost to Daniel Altmaier in the 2nd round a year ago
The quarter-finals of 2020 are his best result to date, and Sinner naturally doesn’t want to let that get to him. He has played Christopher Eubanks once in his career, with the favorite winning in three sets at the 2022 US Open.
Our German bookmakers are certainly arguing that it will go down to the wire again this time. The odds show 1.02 to 17.0, you can’t be much clearer in the lead.
Christopher Eubanks of course knows full well that his only chance is that he doesn’t actually have any. The American is finding it very difficult on clay, and that’s putting it very positively
How often has he won on the red clay? Quite simply: not at all! Most recently, he lost in three sets to Tallon Griekspoor in Geneva, before that Terence Atmane, Daniel Elahi Galan and Botic van de Zandschulp were too strong.
Of course, everyone quickly agrees that none of these opponents are on the same level as Jannik Sinner. At 2.01 meters, Eubanks simply does not yet bring his strong service to the court.
He only made his first appearance in the main draw here in Paris last year and was promptly knocked out in the first round. Admittedly, that can happen against Holger Rune, especially as the match went to four sets.
Eubanks achieved his best result at a Grand Slam tournament at Wimbledon 2023, sensationally reaching the quarter-finals and almost knocking out Daniil Medvedev!
My Eubanks Sinner tip
Will Jannik Sinner decide all by himself how quickly his game against Christopher Eubanks is over? It’s not entirely clear how fit the world No. 2 is, or whether his hip will hold up.
Eubanks is certainly not in top form and doesn’t like the red clay very much anyway. Nevertheless, the US American’s serve should never be underestimated. And since we know relatively little about Sinner’s state of health, my tip is:
We’ll see at least one tiebreak!
