Australian Open today – Matches today 21.01.

Slowly but surely, the Australian Open is really picking up steam! The classic David vs. Goliath from the first two rounds is receding more and more, in the 3rd round we can expect the first top duels.

On Friday, the first Major of the year enters its fifth day. There have already been some surprises, but the big sensation is still missing. Also because some of the top favourites are in a frighteningly good mood.

In the night from Friday to Saturday German time, there will be only one player in black-red-gold who will swing the racket. Except for Alexander Zverev, everyone has been eliminated in the meantime.

On the same day, we will also have to deal with Matteo Berrettini, Rafael Nadal or Denis Shapovalov. One thing is certain: Not all of them can be happy about the easy opponent the Olympic champion got!

Australian Open 2022 – 21.01. Preview of Day 5

The duels are getting fewer, consequently the days at the Australian Open are also starting a little later. One of the first matches on the Australian Open schedule will be between Gael Monfils and Cristian Garin.

Almost at the same time, a match awaits with the greatest excitement. Super talent Carlos Alcaraz will meet Matteo Berrettini! It is not the Italian who will get the favourite stamp in this encounter.

Also between Reilly Opelka and Denis Shapovalov the bookmakers don’t really know who they see in front. One serves brutally, the other loves real thrillers over five sets. Whose fate will that be?

It should be a much clearer affair between Alexander Zverev and Radu Albot, at least if we put on the German glasses. The Olympic champion is still without a set loss and is aiming for a quick win.

The last match of the day will be played by Rafael Nadal. With Karan Khachanov he gets his toughest opponent so far and has to show that he deserves the low odds of the betting companies.

Australian Open today broadcast: Where will the matches be played on 21.01.?

When the first match of the day starts at 02:15, the Eurosport team will once again have all the experts on hand. Of course, the third appearance of Alexander Zverev can also be seen here, in addition in the live stream.

Australian Open today 21.01: Gael Monfils – Cristian Garin (03:00 h)

How strong has Gael Monfils been in this Australian Open? The Frenchman started the tournament with an even more expected 6-1, 6-1, 6-3 win over Federico Coria. But his performance in Round 2 was more than remarkable.

6-1, 6-0, 6-4 against Alexander Bublik? What a performance! He completely fended off the ten break chances he gave his two opponents. The world number 20 seems to be as strong as ever at the proud age of 35.

2021 he had failed right in round 1 in Melbourne, now he wants to do everything better. His current opponent will be tough because Cristian Garin is one place ahead of Monfils in the rankings. On the other hand, he already has a lot more sets in his bones at the AO.

Both against Facundo Bagnis and Pedro Martinez he went the full distance, which must have taken a lot of energy. At the ATP Cup, the Chilean showed that his form is not yet right with clear defeats against Roberto Bautista-Agut and Casper Ruud. 1.08 to 8.00 – this is another reason why the odds are clearly in Monfils’ favour.

Our expert tip: Under 3.5 sets

Australian Open today 21.01: Carlos Alcaraz – Matteo Berrettini (03:30)

Carlos Alcaraz against Matteo Berrettini – this duel is actually much too bad for a 3rd round! The young Spaniard is favoured by the bookmakers with a 1.55. Rightly so? So far he has raced through the tournament without losing a set.

After a 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 against Alejandro Tabilo, he followed it up with a 6-2, 6-1, 7-5 against Dusan Lajovic. He surrendered two break chances, an ideal start to the new year after his title at the end of 2021 at the Next Generation Finals.

A few months ago, Alcaraz beat Matteo Berrettini in three sets. And this time? After his quarter-final in New York, he has tasted blood. Berrettini is not in quite as good a shape as Alcaraz, having already dropped two sets.

With Brandon Nakashima and Stefan Kozlov, however, his opponents were not really demanding. Especially as a return player the Roman has problems. In 2021 he had survived his 3rd round at the AO with three won tiebreaks against Karen Khachanov.

Our expert tip: Over 3.5 sets

Australian Open today 21.01: Reilly Opelka – Denis Shapovalov (03:30)

If we go by the odds, we can expect such an even match between Reilly Opelka and Denis Shapovalov that anything can happen. The US American has served 41 aces so far and is known as an excellent server.

He did not drop a set against Kevin Anderson or Dominik Koepfer and showed strong nerves in winning a tiebreak in the decisive third set. For the very first time, he is now in the 3rd round at the Australian Open.

Denis Shapovalov, on the other hand, once again lived up to his reputation as a five-set lover. He progressed against Laslo Djere by 7-6, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6, but against Kwon Soon-woo he again needed all five.

7-6, 6-7, 6-7, 7-5, 6-2 – actually too bumpy for a player of his class. Especially the ten double faults in the 2nd round are unacceptable. For him it is already the third time that he has reached a 3rd round, both players average a 1.90.

Our expert tip: Over 4.5 sets

Australian Open today 21.01: Alexander Zverev – Radu Albot (06:00)

While some top players have been given a tough opponent for the 3rd round, Alexander Zverev can enjoy an easy draw. The Olympic champion has yet to drop a set, beating John Millman 6-4, 6-4, 6-0 despite a frenetic crowd.

If he makes even fewer errors now, he should be very difficult to beat. Since his opponent Radu Albut is not even in the top 100, Zverev does not reach 1.05 in terms of winning odds. But wasn’t there even a real thriller in 2019?

At the US Open this year, Zverev was already leading 2-0 against Albot, but let him come close and needed the fifth set in the end! The outsider has survived the qualifying round this year and already has five matches under his belt.

Against Aleksandar Vukic in the 2nd round, he came through smoothly in three sets. At only 1.75m, he usually proves to be an unpleasant opponent, so Zverev will have to score with his serve.

Our Expert Tip: Under 30.5 Games

Australian Open today 21.01.: Karen Khachanov – Rafael Nadal (10:15 a.m.)

Three straight exits in Round 3, will a fourth in a row follow? Karen Khachanov is up against Rafael Nadal, he’s not given much of a chance. 5.00 to 1.20, the bookmakers have clearly positioned themselves.

Last year, the Russian failed in three lost tiebreaks against Matteo Berrettini. After losing the first set in round 1 to Denis Kudla, things are on track, in the 2nd round he defeated Benjamin Bonzi smoothly 6-4, 6-0, 7-5.

Rafael Nadal is undoubtedly one of his fearful opponents, Khachanov has lost all seven duels and won only one set! The Spaniard is looking for his 21st Grand Slam title in Melbourne and is well on his way.

6-1, 6-4, 6-2 against Marcos Giron and 6-2, 6-3, 6-4 against Yannick Hanfmann, so far the long-injured player has shown no weaknesses. Against Hanfmann, only 54% of the first serve came over the net, here he can still work on himself.

Our Expert Tip: Win Sinner 3:0
