Union Berlin vs. SpVgg Greuther Fürth

Union Berlin are still on course for the European Cup in the Bundesliga! After the Köpenicker were eliminated from the DFB Cup the Wednesday before last with a bitter 1:2 defeat against Leipzig, the Eisernen were able to take revenge just three days later against Rasenball. This time, coach Urs Fischer’s team won 2-1. In fact, this success was the fourth Bundesliga win in a row for the Eisernen. Union is currently in a European Cup spot, but reaching the Champions League is not out of the question for the East Berliners either. In order to reach for the stars, Union must win the upcoming home match against the first relegated team of this Bundesliga season.

Greuther Fürth recently lost 1:4 to Bayer 04 Leverkusen and must now finally resign themselves to a return to the second division. In any case, due to the financial resources and the individual quality of the team, staying in the league would have been a small football miracle. Despite their relegation, Fürth want to say goodbye to the Bundesliga with dignity and make life difficult for their opponents. Whether the cloverleaf can actually give the Eisernen a leg up, you can read in our Union vs Fürth betting tip.

Union Form & Balance Check

In fact, 1. FC Union is the most in-form team in the Bundesliga after the record champions from Munich. The Eisernen were able to celebrate their fourth successive win in Leipzig, despite losing in the cup semi-finals in Leipzig on the previous Wednesday. Urs Fischer’s team has a very special mentality and believes in its own strengths like hardly any other team in the Bundesliga.

Union defends compactly and comes out on the offensive with crosses and long balls to the doubles. Köpenick football is not witchcraft, but it is successful. With a win against Fürth, the Eisernen could set a new record. Never before has Union won five Bundesliga games in a row. In addition, the 4th place in the table is only four points away. It is not out of the question that Union can still achieve this and qualify for the top flight. The 50 points achieved so far are a club record.

Build on home strength

Once again, the Alte Försterei is carrying coach Fischer’s team from victory to victory this season. Of 15 home games so far, Union have lost only two. The Köpenickers have won a full nine games as hosts. With 31 points, the Eisernen are in sixth place in the Bundesliga home table. Only three clubs have won more home games than Union. Union has also been unbeaten at the Alte Försterei for four games. Most recently, there was a 2:0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt. It’s hard to imagine that the safely relegated team will be able to take anything of note with them from the capital city.

Union facts & analysis

 – Union are 6th in the table with 50 points.
 – FCU have won 4 games in a row in the Bundesliga.
 – The Eisernen have not lost any of their last 4 home games

Fürth form & balance check

Greuther Fürth have been relegated. With only 17 points from 31 matches, the 4-1 home defeat to the Werkself last Saturday meant that the team was already certain of going back to the Unterhaus three matchdays before the end of the season. The cloverleaf can no longer reach the relegation place in view of the eleven-point gap. Relegation was certainly to be expected, but it hurt Fürth more than expected after the final whistle, as could be seen from the tears of sporting director Rachid Azzouzi. This season, the Franconians have only won three of 31 games.

5-man chain reduces goals conceded

Of course, Fürth have been the underdogs in every clash so far before kick-off. Nevertheless, the cloverleaf lost justifiably in the vast majority. With an average of 0.8 goals per game, which compares to the average of 2.5 goals conceded per game, no team can stay in the class. In order to reduce the number of goals conceded, coach Leitl switched to a system with a five-man backline a few weeks ago. Three of the last five duels ended 0-0 in this way. However, even this approach is not a sustainable recipe for success, as the most recent result against Leverkusen reveals.

Fürth facts & analysis

 – Fürth are relegated early 3 matchdays before the end of the season.
 – The cloverleaf is winless for 9 games now
 – In the last 5 games Fürth scored a total of only one goal

Predicted line-up – last update on 27 April 2022

Regular goalkeeper Luthe had to give up his place to Rønnow. The Dane will also be between the posts against Fürth. It is unlikely that coach Urs Fischer will start the two goal scorers Voglsammer and Michel against the cloverleaf, as both strikers have great joker qualities and Becker and Awoniyi are also set. The Eisernen will operate in their usual 3-5-2 system with tall full-backs.

Greuther Fürth must continue to do without Nielsen (muscle fibre tear in the thigh), Seguin (muscle fibre tear in the calf), Meyerhöfer (ankle fracture) and Kehr (cruciate ligament tear). Leweling could also be absent. Against Werkself, Ngankam and Hrgota formed the centre of attack. Hrgota is already a starter, but Ngankam’s assist was not the only reason for his nomination for the starting eleven. The youngster is on loan from Hertha and is a homegrown talent of the Alte Dame, which is why the young striker could be all the more on fire against Union. Systematically, coach Leitl will once again play a 3-5-2 system.
