VfB Stuttgart vs. Bayer Leverkusen
The 5th matchday of the Bundesliga is in the starting blocks and VfB Stuttgart will host the Werkself from Leverkusen at their home Mercedes-Benz Arena this weekend. The match will be played on Sunday afternoon from 15:30.
For VfB, the aim on this day is to finally put an end to a frightening negative streak. Of the last nine home games against Leverkusen, the Swabians have not won a single one. Whether we expect Bayer to win again on Sunday and what other predictions we would make for this game is now revealed in our Stuttgart vs. Leverkusen tip.

Stuttgart -Leverkusen Tip
The starting situation is very different on both sides. While the Werkself recently lost for the first time after seven points from the first three games, VfB managed to earn a point against Frankfurt last matchday after previously losing two games in a row while shorthanded. After three games without a win, however, it is time for the Swabians to emerge victorious from a Bundesliga match once again. We can’t wait to see if that happens next Sunday against a strong Leverkusen side.
Stuttgart Form & Balance Check
After the furious opening win against promoted Greuther Fürth (5:1), VfB Stuttgart have not really had much to celebrate in the rest of the season. On matchday 2, the Swabians were beaten 4:0 by runners-up RB Leipzig, relatively without a chance. VfB also failed to take anything of note from their second home match against Freiburg. VfB was unable to fully recover from the early double strike by the Breisgauers (6th, 9th). In the end, it was a narrow 2:3 defeat.
VfB plagued by important absences
The fourth game at Eintracht Frankfurt was not won again, but at least the negative trend was stopped. After falling behind 1-0 through Filip Kostic (79th) and the red card for Waldemar Anton (82nd), it looked like the third defeat in a row a few minutes before the end. Wolfsburg loanee Omar Marmoush, however, managed to rescue a point for his team with the equaliser in the 88th minute. All in all, it can be said that VfB is still struggling with the important absences (especially Kalajdzic, Silas and Mangala), but will certainly score consistently again after their return. Whether that will already be the case on Sunday against Leverkusen, however, is doubtful.
Stuttgart Facts & Analysis
– 4 points from 4 games
– Last played 1:1 in Frankfurt
– Winless since 9 home games against Leverkusen
– Mangala could be in starting eleven for first time after overcoming injury
Leverkusen form & balance check
The visitors from Leverkusen have made a very successful start to the 2021/22 season. After the draw at Union Berlin, the Werkself won both the home match against Borussia Mönchengladbach (4:0) and the away match against FC Augsburg (1:4). In the top match against Borussia Dortmund last weekend, however, Bayer suffered its first defeat of the current season. After a thrilling 90 minutes, the scoreboard at the BayArena showed a 3:4 defeat.
Bayer offence in top form
It was the first time in the club’s history that Leverkusen led three times in a game and still lost. As in the games before, the offensive did its job, only the defence could not continue the stable performances of the last weeks, which is of course anything but easy against an offensively strong team like Borussia Dortmund. In the Europa League, Leverkusen were able to emerge victorious again last Thursday. The Werkself won 2-1 against Ferencvaros Budapest. Now, against Stuttgart, they are looking for another win in the league.
Leverkusen Facts & Analysis
7 points from 4 games
– Last lost 3:4 against Dortmund
– Already scored 12 goals in 4 games
– No Bundesliga team has won more often than VfB (37 times)
Predicted line-up – last update on 17 September 2021
VfB could have completely different players on the pitch in the offensive positions. We have decided on Förster, Klimowicz and Marmoush in the starting eleven. Orel Mangala could form the midfield centre with Wataru Endo for the first time after his injury break. Waldemar Anton is suspended.
The Werkself could well make changes after the English week. Paulinho, Schick and Bakker were spared on Thursday and should certainly be in the starting eleven. Otherwise, it will be a duel between Andrich and Aranguiz in the defensive midfield. Apart from that, there should be no surprises.
