VfB Stuttgart vs. Borussia Mönchengladbach

On the 25th matchday, the Bundesliga will see a relegation duel between two teams that few would have expected to be in the relegation battle before the season. With VfB Stuttgart and Borussia from Mönchengladbach, the seventeenth and thirteenth in the table will meet. Kick-off in the Mercedes-Benz Arena is at 6:30 pm on Saturday at top match time.

However, the fans of both camps should not necessarily look forward to a top match. Stuttgart are already four points behind the relegation place (Hertha BSC with 23 points). Gladbach are currently still four points ahead of the Berliners, but in Stuttgart the Foals are playing not only for the preservation of their class, but also for that of their coach. Stuttgart Form & Balance Check

VfB Stuttgart are not getting off to a good start at the moment. The Swabians have not won in nine league games. Seven of them were lost. Only against the two promoted teams from Fürth and Bochum were there any points to celebrate in this period. Although the performances of the last games clearly show an upward trend, this is not yet reflected in the results.

Against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, Stuttgart led 1-0 for a long time before a late double strike by Christoph Baumgartner (85′, 90′) snatched the three points from the VFB. A fortnight ago, VfL Bochum equalised 1-1 on penalties in the fourth minute of injury time. In the games against Frankfurt (2:3) and Leverkusen (2:4), VfB came back from behind in each case, only to come away empty-handed in the end.

Sasa Kalajdzic’s goals are missing

With 45 goals conceded after 24 games, Stuttgart have the fourth worst defence in the Bundesliga. However, the Swabians already conceded many goals last season, when they conceded 37 after 24 games. The difference is greater, however, in the goals scored. 28 this season compared to 45 last season.

Stuttgart’s top scorer from last season, Sasa Kalajdzic (16 goals and six assists), has only made six appearances and scored two points this season due to injury. However, no other Stuttgart attacker has stepped into the breach for the long Austrian. The two best scorers for the Swabians are two centre-backs, Konstantinos Mavropanos (four goals) and Marc Oliver Kempf (three goals). It is significant that Kempf only played 14 times for VfB and has been playing for Hertha BSC since the end of January.

Stuttgart facts & analysis

 – not won for 9 league games.
 – lost 7 of these 9 games
 – 14 goals conceded in last 6 matches

Gladbach form & balance check

Borussia Mönchengladbach have been the big disappointment this season. With a squad that has enough quality for the Champions League and a coach who narrowly missed out on the top flight last season with Eintracht Frankfurt, the Foals are 13th in the Bundesliga.

After the crushing 6-0 defeat in Dortmund a fortnight ago, Gladbach showed morale on the last matchday. Against VfL Wolfsburg (2:2), Adi Hütter’s team came back from a 0:2 deficit and at least kept a point in the Lower Rhine region.

Potential is there

The team has already proved several times that Gladbach is capable of top performances in the current season. They have not lost any of their three direct duels with FC Bayern and, among other things, spectacularly knocked the Munich side out of the DFB Cup with 5:0. On the other hand, however, they also suffered two 6-0 defeats against SC Freiburg and Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga and a 3-0 cup exit in Hannover.

Gladbach facts & analysis

 – 1 win from last 6 league matches.
 – 12 league games in a row conceded at least 1 goal
 – Scored in 9 of last 10 matches

Predicted line-up – last update on 3 March 2022

VfB Stuttgart are currently being dogged by injury misfortune. After Silas Katompa Mvumpa is again missing for a long time with a shoulder injury, Pascal Stenzel, Orel Mangala and Chris Führich are probably also out against Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Borussia Mönchengladbach will also be without three key players in Lars Stindel, Marvin Freidrich and Tony Jantschke, but can draw from a deeper squad than Stuttgart. Against VFB, we expect Breel Embolo and Kouadio Kone to be back in the starting eleven. Christoph Kramer and Marcus Thuram are likely to be back on the bench in return.

Stuttgart – Gladbach direct comparison & Statistics

The record of the last ten matches between Stuttgart and Gladbach is relatively even. Gladbach left the pitch as winners five times, Stuttgart three times. Two encounters ended in a draw. This was also the case in the first leg (1:1). The goals were scored by Konstantinos Mavropanos (15′) for the Swabians and Jonas Hofmann (42′) for Gladbach.

 – Stuttgart have not won 5 home games in a row (2 draws & 3 defeats).
 – Stuttgart have conceded at least 1 goal in every home game this season.
 – Borussia Mönchengladbach has won 1 of their last 8 away games
 – Borussia Mönchengladbach have conceded at least 1 goal in every away match this season
