Southampton – Tottenham Tip

Southampton FC celebrated a rather surprising success last Sunday, winning 3-2 at sixth-placed West Ham United after six games without a win before. For the Saints, this was only their second away win of the current season. Spurs, meanwhile, continued their upward trend with a fourth win in their last five games against Crystal Palace (3-0). After five home games in a row, Antonio Conte’s side now face their first away league game since November 7.

Southampton Form & Balance Check

Southampton FC celebrated an away win last Sunday that was not really expected at all in the run-up to the game. The Saints had failed to win six league games in a row prior to their visit to sixth-placed West Ham United, who had picked up 13 of a possible 15 points from their five previous home games, beating the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool. The fact that they then managed to get a three-point win at the in-form Hammers, of all teams, is yet another of football’s crazy stories.

Saints now continue their success?

In terms of the table, this win was extremely important to keep the relegation places at a distance again after the disappointing last weeks. Now, however, Southampton must finally look to get some consistency in their own game. Between Matchday 8 and Matchday 11, they picked up a strong ten points out of a possible twelve, but apart from that, there hasn’t been much to cheer about for the Saints this season. The truth is, however, that only one of the last five games was lost, in addition to three draws and the most recent victory. Success and failure are simply very close together for Ralph Hasenhüttl’s team this year.

Southampton facts & analysis
 – 20 points from 18 games
 – Most recently won 2:3 at West Ham
 – Lost only 1 of 8 home games
 – Lost only 1 of last 5 matches

Tottenham form & balance check

Tottenham Hotspur confirmed their strong form once again last weekend against Crystal Palace. Without much effort, Antonio Conte’s team won 3-0 against the twelfth-placed team from London. The lightning double strike by Harry Kane (32nd) and Lucas Moura (34th) was followed just three minutes later by the sending off of Wilfried Zaha, with which Crystal Palace practically took themselves out of the game. The rest of the game was merely a formality. Heung-Min Son finally put the lid on the game with a 3-0 goal in the 74th minute.

Son still unstoppable

Even though he only scored the rather unimportant last goal on the day, he has been indispensable for Spurs in recent weeks. Last Sunday’s goal marked the South Korean’s fourth consecutive game in charge. He has also now scored as many goals in five games under Antonio Conte as he did in the first eleven matchdays of the season combined. He is the face of the recovery and Spurs are likely to rely on his skills again at Southampton on Tuesday.

Tottenham Facts & Analysis
 – 29 points from 16 games
 – 3-0 win against Crystal Palace last time out
 – Won 4 of last 5 games
 – Last away game played on November 7

Predicted line-up – last updated on 28 December 2021

Due to the high load, there could be isolated rotations on both sides. However, as these are difficult to predict, we present you the best possible formations. Southampton FC might not change anything compared to the 2:3 win at West Ham. Alex McCarthy and left-back Sam McQueen are still absent.

Spurs could also remain unchanged after their commanding 3-0 win over Crystal Palace. Cristian Romero, Giovanni Lo Celso and Ryan Sessegnon are still absent. However, Harry Winks,Ben Davies and/or Tanguy N’dombele could return to the starting eleven.

Southampton -Tottenham direct comparison & stats

The direct comparison clearly goes to Spurs with 44 to 26 wins and 20 draws. Also in recent years, the balance is relatively clearly in favour of Spurs, who have won each of the last three and eight of the last twelve duels. Most recently, the 2:5 away win was followed by a 2-1 home victory in which Gareth Bale (60th) and Heung-Min Son (90th) turned the game around after trailing 0:1.
