Sevilla FC vs. Atlético Madrid

The last matchday of 2021 in the Spanish La Liga is coming up this weekend and we get another real highlight. With Sevilla FC and Atletico Madrid, two absolute top teams meet on Saturday at 21:00. For both of them, however, the year is not over yet, because during the week there are more catch-up games. You can find our prediction for this match in the following Sevilla vs Atletico tip.

Sevilla FC is benefiting from the mistakes of its rivals this season and, with 34 points from 16 games, is the first chaser of Real Madrid, which has already lost ground. The second-placed Andalusians are already eight points behind the Galactics, but Sevilla are still playing a strong season. Atletico, however, will not necessarily be satisfied with 29 points and fourth place, the reigning champions still have their problems this season.

Sevilla Form & Balance Check

The current La Liga season is perhaps the most interesting in years. With Barcelona and Atletico two of the three big favourites are struggling, giving other clubs a chance. Sevilla have seized this as well as Betis, Real Sociedad or Rayo Vallecano, for example. But the Andalusians are currently the second best team in the league and only have to subordinate themselves to the strong galactics of Real Madrid. In the league, the team has recently recorded two 1-0 wins in a row against strong opponents from Villareal and Bilbao.

Bitter exit in the CL

In the Champions League, however, Sevilla also suffered a bitter setback recently. In such an exciting group with Wolfsburg, Salzburg and Lille, all clubs had their fate in their own hands on the last matchday. A win against Salzburg would have been enough for Sevilla to reach the last 16, but the Andalusians lost 0:1 in Austria and now have to go into the Europa League as third in the group. For the time being, the play-offs for the last 16 will be against Dinamo Zagreb from the Croatian capital.

Sevilla facts & analysis

 – 2nd place in La Liga
 – Last win 1:0 in Bilbao
 – 2 league wins in a row

Atletico form & balance check

Atletico Madrid are not really getting going so far this season. The Rojiblancos have been too inconsistent and have never been able to string two wins together in the league after the first two matchdays. Their erratic form and regular slip-ups have resulted in a disappointing fourth place for the reigning champions, a full 13 points behind local rivals Real. Atletico also failed to convince in the Champions League, but still managed to narrowly advance to the round of 16 with a win against Porto on the last matchday. There they will face Cristiano Ronaldo’s Manchester United in a thrilling duel in the New Year.

Nothing to get against Real

On the last matchday, Atletico had the chance to close the gap on Real in the capital derby. But after a 2-0 defeat, the opposite happened, and instead of a seven-point deficit, the gap is now a full 13. For the Galactics, leading man Karim Benzema scored once again for a 1-0 lead, and Asensio provided the final score in the second half. Vinicius Junior was convincing with two assists. Real thus inflicted Atletico’s second league defeat in a row.

Atletico facts & analysis
 – 4th place in La Liga
 – Last lost 0:2 at Real
 – 2 league defeats in a row

Predicted line-up – last update on 16 Dec 2021

Julen Lopetegui has a lot of options especially offensively. Oscar, Oliver and Munir are other options for the starting eleven, further back Delaney should operate in place of the yellow suspended Fernando. Left-back Acuna is also missing due to injury and is likely to be replaced again by ex-Bremer Augustinsson. For Atletico, it will be exciting to see whether Simeone will keep the three-man backline he has practised in the last two games or break it up. Other options include Lodi, Lemar, Joao Felix and ex-Herthman Cunha.
