Schalke 04 vs. TSG Hoffenheim

The 10th matchday of the Bundesliga is in the starting blocks and for the kick-off we can look forward to the duel between FC Schalke 04 and TSG Hoffenheim on Friday evening. Kick-off is, as always, at 8:30 pm.

The mood is currently tense on both sides. Hoffenheim recently remained winless for three games in a row for the first time in this Bundesliga season, while Schalke even lost all of their last three games. Four defeats in a row would be a first in the Bundesliga for coach Frank Kramer. Statistically, however, the chances are not bad that this scenario will not happen on Friday. Find out more in our betting tips.

Curiously, the two teams meet again just four days later in the DFB Cup. Our Schalke vs Hoffenheim betting tips now tell you who we think will win the match there and what other predictions we have for the opening match of Matchday 10.

Schalke Form & Balance Check

With only two defeats from the first six games, FC Schalke 04 initially got off to a decent start in their first season after being promoted again. The first win on matchday 6 against Bochum was supposed to be something of a liberation blow, but in retrospect it was just the opposite. Most recently, the Königsblauen had to concede defeat to their opponents three times in a row. The 1-0 defeat in the derby at Borussia Dortmund was followed by the bitter 3-2 home defeat against Augsburg, before S04 lost 4-0 in Leverkusen last weekend on Xabi Alonso’s coaching debut.

Scarily harmless on the offensive

From the very beginning, the Knappen were completely overwhelmed by the Werkself’s pace. After 53 minutes, Bayer finally deserved to lead 3:0 and the game was decided early. More frightening than the clear defeat from the Königsblauen’s point of view, however, is the realisation that a structured offensive game is not present in any way. Neither against Leverkusen, nor in the other games. Of course, this can also be proven with figures. Schalke have fired the fewest shots on goal of all Bundesliga teams this Bundesliga season, but have still managed to score ten goals with a total of 95 shots on goal.

Schalke facts & analysis

 – 6 points from 9 games
 – Last lost 0:4 at Leverkusen
 – Lost last 3 games

Hoffenheim form & balance check

TSG Hoffenheim are currently experiencing their first real period of weakness of the new season. The goalless 0-0 draw against second-placed Freiburg and the 1-1 draw at the in-form Alte Dame from Berlin are not frightening results, but at the latest after the 2-1 defeat against promoted Werder Bremen, TSG would be well advised to prevent their fourth winless game in a row with a three-goal win at Schalke. Otherwise, the mood could quickly change after the successful start to the season and four wins from the first six games.

No win against a promoted team again?

With a sense of achievement at Schalke, the guests from Sinsheim would defy several negative series at once. For one thing, TSG have won only one of their last nine Bundesliga games against promoted teams. Last weekend, Hoffenheim lost again against a newly-promoted Bundesliga team. For Andre Breitenreiter, a three-goal win at Schalke would also be a first. He has never won at the Veltins Arena as a coach and has only managed to pick up one point from three guest games. Will he finally get his first win against Schalker, who are in poor form?

Hoffenheim facts & analysis

 – 14 points from 9 games
 – Last lost 1:2 against Bremen
 – Winless for 3 games

Predicted line-up – last updated 12 Oct 2022

There’s a lot going on at S04 in terms of personnel. Tobias Mohr recently called off due to illness, so competitor Thomas Ouwejan should be safe for the place on the left side in the next game. The defence is virtually setting itself up due to numerous injury worries. Marcin Kaminski, Sepp van den Berg and Ibrahima Cissé are all out against Hoffenheim, so it could come down to a three-man defence with Cedric Brunner, Florian Flick and Leo Greiml. Jordan Larsson is an alternative on the right wing and Danny Latza could also start in the centre.

TSG will again have to make do without Benjamin Hübner, Ermin Bicakcic and Ihlas Bebou at Schalke. Alternatives to our starting eleven are Kevin Akpoguma, Angelo Stiller, Pavel Kaderabek and Georginio Rutter.
