Newcastle United vs. Everton FC

In England, it is currently going one after the other and after the international break, the 4th round in the FA Cup followed and now we can expect the 24th matchday in the Premier League during the week, even if the two opponents in this game have not yet played 23 games each. Newcastle host Everton and that means a relegation battle this season. The Magpies have been busy in the winter transfer market and have invested more than the entire Bundesliga in new players. They also changed their coach and under Eddie Howe the relegation candidates could at least start scoring again.

Now the Toffees are waiting and the team from Liverpool has also recently signed a new coach, because things just didn’t work out under Rafa Benitez and Everton slid further and further towards the bottom of the table. Now Frank Lampard is expected to get the team back on track and whether that will work out, you can find out in this Newcastle – Everton tip.

Newcastle Form & Balance Check

Few teams in Europe have grabbed as many headlines in recent weeks and months as Newcastle. With the sale of the club to one of the richest people in the world, fans are hoping that their team will finally compete for the title in England. But for the time being, the Magpies have to stay in the league and that will probably be anything but easy this year, because the first half of the season was disastrous and 14 matchdays passed before they even won a game. On the last matchday they managed to get their 2nd win of the season and the goal was scored by the legend Jonjo Shelvey.

Can the new signings save Newcastle?

It is interesting that Shelvey of all people scored the decisive goal in the game against Leeds, as the expensive new purchases have not yet made a big impression. The most expensive purchase, Guimaraes from Lyon, has not yet been used, but Wood has not yet been able to stand out in attack either. Individually, the team is not bad anyway, but it simply lacks a leading player. One player who can take over this role is Kieran Trippier, who has put in solid performances so far. We are very curious to see if Newcastle can stay in the league and stay up in the long run.

Newcastle facts & analysis
 – They are currently 18th in the table.
 – On average they score one goal per game
 – Newcastle have the second weakest defens

Everton form & balance check

Although the Toffees actually have an individually strong squad together, they really can’t get any consistency in their play for years. It will now probably be the 3rd year in a row that Everton don’t finish in single digits in the table and that can’t and shouldn’t be the ambition. Since Romelu Lukaku left the club in 2017, no striker has been able to match the Belgian’s rate and even though they actually have a very promising player in Calvert-Lewin up front, the team just can’t get a consistent move forward.

Disastrous record against “small” teams

Everything in games where you might think Everton are the superior team, they lose almost every game. Just recently the 3 defeats in a row against Norwich, Brighton and Aston Villa showed this. They also failed to pick up a single point against Watford, Crystal Palace and Brentford. Now, under Frank Lampard, everything is supposed to get better in exactly these games and the start in the FA Cup against Brentford has already been a success. So far, things don’t look really bleak in the relegation battle either, but that is primarily due to the weakness of the opponents and not their own strength.

Everton Facts & Analysis

 – Only one point from the last 5 games.
 – 16th place in the table
 – Only one win from last 14 games

Predicted line-up – last update on 7 February 2022

Following last weekend’s win over Leeds United, we expect only forced changes for the home side, with the captain and Joelinton injured and unfit. For the newcomer from Lyon, Guimaraes, the game could still come too early, otherwise he would be a starting eleven candidate. For the visitors, Yerri Mina is an option in defence and Dele Alli could also make his debut in the centre. Rotation is also possible in the attack.

Newcastle – Everton direct comparison & stats

Interestingly, the second leg will be played before the official first leg, as the match from December had to be postponed. All in all, however, the direct comparison is extremely even and out of a whole 170 direct duels, Newcastle have won 66 and Everton 68.

 – Last season Newcastle won both their games against Everton.
 – Everton have won 3 of their last 5 games at St. James Park
 – In 5 of the last 6 direct duels, both have scored at least one goal
