Manchester United – West Ham United

In the Premier League there are two catch-up games on the schedule during the week. On Tuesday and Wednesday, however, the oldest cup competition in the world is back in action. The most interesting clash in the last 16 of the FA Cup will take place at Old Trafford on Wednesday. At 20:45 Manchester United will welcome the Irons from East London.

Manchester United are riding a wave of success at the moment. The Red Devils have only lost one competitive match since the World Cup break and are now in third place in the league. At the weekend, Man United also won the EFL Cup final 2-0 against Newcastle United to claim their first title since 2017.

West Ham, on the other hand, are lagging behind in the Premier League. The Hammers are in the midst of a relegation battle and are currently in 16th position in the league. At the weekend, however, the Irons achieved a real liberation. In the basement duel against Nottingham, West Ham won 4-0. Whether the east Londoners can build on this success in the cup, you can find out in our Man United West Ham tip.

Man United Form & Balance Check

Erik ten Hag shaped Manchester United into a real top team again. The Red Devils won the EFL Cup last weekend to claim their first title since 2017, and United also recently beat Barcelona in the Europa League, so they are on course for the title there too.

In the Premier League, however, Man United will probably not be able to win the title this season. The Red Devils are already eight points behind leaders Arsenal. Nevertheless, Man United is currently in top form in the league. Since the World Cup break, the 20-time English champions have lost only one match.

Better without Ronaldo

There has been speculation throughout the first leg that Manchester United and Cristiano Ronaldo would part ways. Although the Portuguese superstar has not played a particularly big role for the Red Devils this season, scoring just one league goal, he still continued to grab the headlines. Ronaldo has since joined al-Nasr in Saudi Arabia, where he has already scored eight goals in five games.

However, Ronaldo’s departure does not seem to have had a negative impact on Manchester United’s play, as the Red Devils have only lost once since his departure. Marcus Rashford in particular seems to have benefited from Ronaldo’s departure, with the young Englishman scoring an impressive 17 goals in his last 19 competitive games.

Man United facts & analysis

 – Third place in the Premier League.
 – Only two home defeats in all competitions this season.
 – Current EFL Cup winners

West Ham form & balance check

West Ham United have an unblemished record in the Europa Conference League so far, advancing to the last 16 in commanding fashion. The Hammers will now face AEK Larnaka next week. In the Premier League, however, David Moyes’ team is lagging behind expectations. After 24 match days, the Hammers are only in 16th place with 23 points.

The Irons are thus far behind their yield from the previous season, when they already had 17 points more on their account at that time and occupied a place in the qualification for the Champions League. Last weekend, however, West Ham won the all-important basement clash against Nottingham Forest 4-0.

New signings fail to make an impact

West Ham brought in many big-name additions in the summer to take the squad to a new level. However, no new player has yet delivered the expected performances. In defence, Emerson and Nayef Aguerd were missing for a long time due to injury. Thilo Kehrer, although playing frequently, has mostly disappointed in his appearances.

And in the offensive Lucas Paquetá and Gianluca Scamacca are not yet the hoped-for reinforcements. Scamacca has only scored three times in the league so far. Lucas Paquetá, who scored nine goals and set up three others for Lyon in pre-season, currently has just two goals and two assists to his name in the Premier League.

West Ham facts & analysis

 – Currently 16th in the Premier League.
 – Only one defeat in last five league games
 – In the last 16 of the Conference League against Larnaka

Predicted line-up – last update on 27 February 2023

Manchester United will go into the game with a 4-2-3-1, as they have done most recently. Coach Erik ten Hag will again rely on former Wolfsburg player Wout Weghorst up front. Casemiro will clean up in front of the defence as a six and Rashford will provide a scoring threat on the wings. Eriksen, Martial and Donny van de Beek are injured and will not play.

West Ham will probably go into the game with a 4-3-3 again. Danny Ings, the weekend’s double scorer, has already played one game for his old employers Aston Villa in the FA Cup and so may not be involved on Wednesday. In addition, the Irons are still missing Zouma and Cornet through injury.
