Manchester City vs. Leicester City

Just four days after the bitter League Cup exit at Liverpool FC (5:4 n.E.), Leicester City already have the next top match coming up. Their opponents in the 19th matchday of the Premier League are the reigning champions Manchester City on Sunday afternoon. Kick-off at the Etihad Stadium is at 16:00.

In recent years, these encounters have always been very competitive. Four of the last five duels have ended 1-0 or 2-0, with the Foxes winning the remaining encounter 5-2 away from home. For the Skyblues, the road to the next three points will definitely not be a walk in the park. Whether we think the underdogs can pull off a big surprise and what we think about this game can be found in our Man City vs Leicester tip.

Man City -Leicester Tip

With Leicester failing to score consistently for a few games in a row this season, it looks set to be a mid-table season for the 2016 surprise champions. The quality is there, but Brendan Rodgers’ team does not manage to get it on the pitch on a regular basis. The Citizens, on the other hand, have won all of their last eight matches and are 41 points clear at the top of the table. Nevertheless, an exciting game is expected as Man City have traditionally struggled with Leicester in recent years.

Man City Form & Balance Check

For Manchester City, the 2021/22 season has been going like clockwork for some time now. Within the last eleven competitive matches, only RB Leipzig have managed not to leave the pitch as losers against the Sheikh club on matchday 6 of the Champions League group stage. On the contrary: The Saxons even won the duel with the Citizens, who were far from playing with a B eleven on this day, 2-1. Pep Guardiola’s eleven had already secured first place in Group A at this point, but it is nevertheless now a small stain on their otherwise absolutely white waistcoat.

Citizens currently unstoppable

The Skyblues have won the following three matches all to nil. The narrow 1-0 win over Wolverhampton was followed by a furious 7-0 victory over Leeds United, before Newcastle United were also thrashed 4-0 away from home. Once again, it was impressive how many different players got on the scoresheet for Man City in these games. In the 7-0 win over Leeds there were six different scorers and in the 4-0 defeat at Newcastle all the goals were scored by different players. The only player to score in both matches was Riyad Mahrez.

Man City facts & analysis
 – 41 points from 18 games
 – Last won 0-4 at Newcastle
 – Last 11 goals – 9 different scorers
 – Last 8 league games won

Leicester form & balance check

The visitors from Leicester are not really playing a bad season, but they are still a bit behind their own expectations. On Sunday, the Foxes will play their 17th Premier League match and so far they have only managed to win two matches in a row once this season (2-1 at Brentford after 4-2 against Man United). Brendan Rodgers’ side have picked up just eight points from their last seven games. Most recently, a 2-1 defeat at Aston Villa was followed by a 4-0 win over Newcastle United.

No win again on Boxing Day?

Now on Boxing Day, the Foxes face reigning champions Manchester City and statistically there is not much to suggest that they will take anything of note away from the Etihad Stadium. Man City are unbeaten in eight league home games on Boxing Day and have won all of their last six. Leicester, on the other hand, traditionally find Christmas dinner heavy on their stomachs. Of their last 11 Boxing Day games, the Foxes have won just one. But therein lies the underdog’s chance: that one win came against the then reigning champions – Manchester City – in the 2018/19 season.

Leicester facts & Analysis
 – 22 points from 16 games
 – Last win 4-0 against Newcastle
 – Already 3 away defeats – as many as at the end of last season
 – Both away wins at promoted sides picked up

Predicted line-up – last update on 23 December 2021

Man City currently only have to do without Ferran Torres, who broke his foot in mid-October. Kyle Walker could return to the squad. The starting eleven could still look something like the one used in the 0-4 defeat at Newcastle. Gündogan, Foden, Walker and/or Stones could also play from the start.

On the visitors’ side, Nampalys Mendy, Wesley Fofana and James Justin are missing. Compared to the 4-0 win against Newcastle, the starting eleven could remain almost unchanged. Ricardo Pereira is likely to start at right back again after recovering from injury. Either Jamie Vardy or Patson Daka will play up front.

Man City -Leicester direct comparison & stats

The direct comparison is relatively clear in favour of Manchester City with 40 wins to 29 and 20 draws. However, the record over the last few years is only just in favour of the Citizens. Man City have won three of the last five meetings, while Leicester have come out on top twice. The last three duels all took place in Leicester and ended 0:2, 1:0 and 0:1.

 – Did you know that Leicester City score 30% of their goals between the 31-45 minute mark?
