Bayer Leverkusen vs. Werder Bremen

The next matchday in the Bundesliga is just around the corner and like every week, we can expect some exciting games in Germany’s top division. On Saturday afternoon Bayer Leverkusen and Werder Bremen will meet at prime time at 15:30. The Werkself have had a really bad start to the season, with four points after six matchdays and lie in penultimate place in the table. Although the trend has been somewhat more positive in recent weeks, this interim result cannot be Bayer’s claim.

The guests from Bremen, on the other hand, got off to a solid start. Eight points after six matchdays are absolutely within reason, even if the 0:1 last Friday against Augsburg hurt a lot. The Fuggerstädter are a direct competitor in the relegation battle and losing such games is then doubly bitter. The international break follows next weekend, which is why this match is even more important. Find out who we think will come out on top in this clash in our Leverkusen – Bremen betting tips.

Leverkusen Form & Balance Check

Despite last week’s win over Atlético Madrid in the top flight, Bayer Leverkusen’s season has been anything but good so far. The fact that they are in a relegation spot after six matchdays is not something we want to hang too high, but it is a far cry from the club’s actual aspirations. This interim result is due to a mix of defensive vulnerability and too much inconsistency in front of the opponent’s goal. The Werkself simply misses too many big chances and is punished ice-cold for individual mistakes in the defence. The 2:3 against Freiburg in the last home game is exemplary, when the Breisgauers actually scored three goals with three chances. Bayer is currently lacking this callousness.

Many key players are running behind their form

There is no doubt that the Leverkusen squad has the potential to compete for the Champions League again. They showed that on Tuesday in the top flight against Atlético, when they hardly conceded anything over 90 minutes. It was Bayer 04’s first really solid performance of the season, but now they have to put in a performance like that in the Bundesliga. The season is still long, but a points average of 0.66 is anything but satisfactory at this point. Three points are needed against Werder, otherwise things could get really tight for Seoane, too.

Leverkusen facts & analysis

 – The Werkself have lost every game at home, so far in the league.
 – They conceded the third most goals of all Bundesliga teams
 – Bayer always scored at least twice in their last three games

Bremen form & balance check

With eight points after six matchdays, Bremen will be able to live quite well. However, it is becoming increasingly clear that the team is reaching its limit at times. As soon as the SVW lets up just one percent, it becomes very difficult for them to win the games. That was evident both in the first defeat against Frankfurt and now in the 0:1 loss against Augsburg. The loss of Leonardo Bittencourt weighed extremely heavily, and Werder lost a lot of quality in midfield. Romano Schmid cannot replace the 28-year-old on an equal footing and newcomer Jens Stage also needs more time to get used to the climate in the Bundesliga.

Is Ducksch still “on fire”?

After staying in the Bundesliga, the chant “Ducksch is on fire” echoed throughout Bremen’s Weserstadion. Almost four months later, the euphoria surrounding the club is still there, but the striker has so far tended to be one of the losers in Bremen’s promotion squad. While his partner in attack, Niclas Füllkrug, has been shooting everything to pieces, Ducksch is not yet doing well. He prepared three goals, but his deficits in finishing are becoming more and more noticeable.

The miss from eleven metres against Augsburg probably didn’t help to boost his self-confidence. Despite everything, “Duckschi” is still part of the starting eleven and will also start against Leverkusen. But a personal sense of achievement would do both him and the club good, because Werder needs his goals in the fight to stay in the relegation zone.

Bremen facts & analysis

 – Still unbeaten away from home
 – Scored at least two goals in every away game so far
 – Five of the seven away goals Werder scored after the 85th minute

Predicted line-up – last update on 15 September 2022

Currently Leverkusen are playing the back four with four skilled centre-backs. This worked well against Atlético, which is why we expect the same formation. On the six, Andrich and Demirbay have become familiar with the game and will most likely play this position against Werder as well. On the offensive side, Seoane is spoilt for choice, with all the key players fit apart from Wirtz. Possibly Frimpong will start as a more defensive player to seal off the strong right side of Bremen.

Despite the weak performance against Augsburg, we expect only one change in the Bremen team. Stage could be rotated out after the weak performance, Schmidt could get another chance from the start. Bittencourt is still missing due to injury, Pavlenka is available again after his substitution.

Leverkusen – Bremen direct comparison & Statistics

The two sides have already played 82 duels in the top flight, with Werder coming out on top 27 times. Five times more often than the Werkself, who won 22 times. A full 33 encounters ended in a draw, including the last two duels in the 2020/21 season.

 – Leverkusen have won only one of their last seven home games against Werder.
 – Both sides have scored at least one goal in five of the last six meetings.
 – Werder are the fifth best away team of the season
