Hamburger SV vs. Hertha BSC

On Monday the time has finally come. The 18th participant of the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga will be determined. Hamburger SV receives Hertha BSC and it is the second leg in the relegation. Already on Thursday the first leg took place in Berlin. In the first half of the relegation HSV had the better end for themselves and won 1:0. Accordingly, they go into Monday night’s match with an advantage.

In general, the game was very uneventful, especially the Berliners disappointed all along the line. Hertha couldn’t really create a real scoring chance over the entire 90 minutes, they lacked courage almost throughout. Hamburg, on the other hand, did not play quite as offensively as usual, but were able to put their match plan on the pitch much better. The goal came out of the blue, but in the end HSV was the deserved winner. Find out who we think will be promoted to the Bundesliga in this HSV – Hertha tip.

HSV Form & Balance Check

Who would have thought just a few weeks ago that HSV would hold all the cards in their own hands in the relegation second leg? After an extremely strong final spurt in the league (and the help of the competition) Hamburg could still sensationally reach the relegation place. Including the first leg in Berlin, the Red Shirts have now won six games in a row. For the first time in their second-division history, they have really done their duty. This has not only put them third, but has allowed them to build a new self-image and confidence, which is probably even more important.

New Hamburg effectiveness

For a long time, it was Hamburg’s big shortcoming. Namely, the negligence in the chance exploitation. Against Hertha, for the first time, they changed their match plan a little and didn’t storm towards the opponent’s goal at full throttle. The defence did its job solidly against harmless Hertha. In addition, they scored a goal out of nowhere up front, which has now given them this advantage in the second leg. They also played this way in the last weeks of the 2. Bundesliga and thus qualified for the relegation. We are curious to see if HSV can bring that to the pitch in the last game of the season.

HSV Facts & Analysis

 – 6 wins in a row (in league and relegation).
 – They have the best defence in the 2. league
 – HSV have scored in 18 of their last 19 matches

Hertha form & balance check

How Hertha could get into this dicey situation again, the Berliners probably don’t know themselves. Actually, they had everything in their own hands and relegation was as good as out of the question. But because of the poor goal difference and the defeats in the last two games of the season, their backs are against the wall. The first leg reflected their mood very well, as the team looked unsettled and helpless on the pitch. There was hardly a move towards the goal and self-confidence was missing. This attitude must change urgently for the second leg, otherwise it looks bleak for the Herthans.

Magath’s experiments do not bear fruit

With the 19-year-old Wollschläger, the Berlin coach wanted to cause confusion and bring a surprise element into the game. But this idea failed miserably, because the young striker was completely out of his depth. Already at the break it was over for Wollschläger. Surprisingly, Kevin-Prince Boateng stayed out for 90 minutes. Magath justified this by saying that the player was not that fit, but it would certainly have been enough for the last 20 minutes. In the second leg, hopes will rest on Santi Ascacibar, who was suspended in the first leg. Hertha can make good use of the Argentine’s aggressiveness.

Hertha facts & analysis

 – 3 defeats in a row
 – Hertha have been the worst team in the second half of the season
 – Away they have scored only 13 goals in 17 games

Predicted line-up – last update on 22 May 2022

For Tim Walther there is actually no reason to change anything before the second leg. Above all, the defence did a good job. Jatta and Kittel were also offensive assets on the wings. Glatzel is set to play up front anyway.

It will be interesting at Hertha. It is extremely unlikely that Felix Magath will play the same eleven again. The back four may remain the same, with Ascacibar returning to the six in midfield. It is quite possible that Belfodil will form the only front line, with Suat Serdar as a ten and Marco Richter on the wing. More pace is needed and the winger brings that.
