Hertha BSC vs. RB Leipzig

At the end of the 23rd matchday of the Bundesliga, the struggling capital club Hertha BSC and RB Leipzig will face each other on Sunday evening. The match at Berlin’s Olympiastadion will kick off at 19:30.

The omens for the match could hardly be more different. While Leipzig are second in the second half of the season and have taken twelve points from five games, Hertha BSC – like only VfB Stuttgart – have yet to win a game in the second half of the season. And this despite the fact that the Berliners had to deal with the promoted teams Bochum and Fürth on the last two matchdays. Anyone who still remembers the results of the last duels with Leipzig will fear the worst for the upcoming home game.

Whether we also expect the hosts to go down to defeat on Sunday and what else we think about this game can now be read in our Hertha vs Leipzig betting tip.

Hertha Form & Balance Check

After the recent 2-1 defeat at bottom side Greuther Fürth, at the latest, all alarm bells should be ringing at Hertha BSC. Just because the squad undoubtedly has the quality for the Bundesliga does not mean that the Old Lady will automatically be spared relegation. Last season it was a nail-biter right to the end, and if the Berliners don’t tighten up quickly, it could be a very tight affair again this year. The form curve of the last few weeks (only 2 points from the last 5 games) is clearly pointing downwards. The lead over the relegation place has shrunk to one point, 17th place is only five points away.

Change of coach without effect

The change of coach from Pal Dardai to Tayfun Korkut has not paid off at all so far. The team has only picked up nine points in his first nine games. After a fairly successful start to his tenure (7 points from the first 4 games), things have been going downhill lately. Nevertheless, the 47-year-old is confident ahead of the tough home match against Leipzig.

“We want to take the game into our own hands, not just somehow end up in the penalty area, but create goals and steer the game in our direction. To do that, we want to and have to be brave in the game and play forward. (…) If we play disciplined, we definitely have a chance.” In the recent past, however, it has only worked extremely rarely for Hertha to actually follow words with deeds.

Hertha Facts & Analysis

 – Last lost 2:1 in Fürth
 – Only 2 points from last 5 games
 – Lost 9 of 11 duels with Leipzig

Leipzig Form & Balance Check

While Hertha BSC continue to tread water under Tayfun Korkut, RB Leipzig have made great strides forward under new coach Domenico Tedesco. They have won four of their last five games, most recently 3:1 against 1. FC Köln. Since he took over, only FC Bayern have scored more points (18) than RB Leipzig (16). Under the Italian-born coach, the Saxons averaged exactly 2.0 points per game and won 63 per cent of all Bundesliga games, which are both best figures of all Leipzig Bundesliga coaches. It remains to be seen whether these values can be confirmed in the rest of the season.

Tedesco revives the offensive game

It’s not unlikely, though, as Tedesco has not only managed to get results by the skin of his teeth, but has also taken the team a long way forward, especially in terms of play. Under his leadership, Leipzig have already had 32 major chances (an average of four per game), which is the best figure in the league in this period. In the first 14 matchdays, there were only 25, i.e. an average of 1.7 per game.

Now Leipzig also have their favourite opponent, Hertha BSC, in front of them. RB has scored an average of 3.55 goals against the Berliners so far. In all duels that have been played at least ten times in the Bundesliga, only the average of Frankfurt’s Eintracht against Rot-Weiss Essen (3.57) is higher. However, it is questionable whether Nkunku & Co. will set off such fireworks again just three days after the Europa League match against Real Sociedad (2:2).

Leipzig facts & analysis

 – 34 points from 22 games
 – Last win 3:1 against Cologne
 – Average of 3.55 goals scored against Hertha
 – Won 4 of last 5 matches

Predicted line-up – last updated 18 Feb 2022

Hertha are missing Stark, Serdar (coronavirus), Boyata (ankle injury), Dardai (ankle injury), Jarstein (rehabilitation training) and Nsona (cruciate ligament tear). In central defence, we can therefore expect the duo Gechter and Kempf. Jovetic and Belfodil are set to play up front. In the centre, Tousart could start alongside Ascacibar and Darida.

On the visitors’ side, there could be some rotation due to the English week. Orban is still slightly questionable at the moment. Should he not be enough, Simakan would probably replace him. Mukiele and/or Kampl could play for Henrichs and Laimer. Forsberg and Szoboszlai would also be potential starting candidates, possibly for Haidara. Only left-back Halstenberg is missing due to injury.

Hertha – Leipzig direct comparison & Statistics

The direct comparison is clearly in favour of Leipzig, who have won nine of the previous eleven duels. Berlin’s only victory came in Leipzig in December 2017 (2:3). The Alte Dame also secured the only draw at the Red Bull Arena (May 2020, 2:2).

 – Last season, RB Leipzig won both matches against Hertha BSC (2-1 at home and 3-0 away).
 – Hertha BSC have not won any of their last 4 home matches.
 – When RB Leipzig leads 0-1 in away matches, they win 69% of them.
 – Hertha BSC: Suat Serdar has collected the most yellow cards (6). At RB Leipzig it is Josko Gvardiol (4).
