Borussia Mönchengladbach vs. FSV Mainz

At the end of the 5th matchday of the Bundesliga, the still unbeaten Borussia from Mönchengladbach will receive FSV Mainz 05 at Borussia Park early Sunday evening at 17:30. Our Gladbach vs Mainz betting tips will tell you whether the Gladbach side will remain unbeaten in their fifth game of the season and what we think of the match.

Mainz remained without points for the first time in over four months after a season-long run of six unbeaten Bundesliga games against Leverkusen on the last matchday. After a disastrous start to the season, it was finally the long-awaited liberation for the Werkself. Now the 05ers are threatened with a second defeat in a row, because the Foals have been particularly difficult to beat in their own stadium lately.

In fact, Borussia have won all four of their last four Bundesliga home games – more than they last did under Marco Rose almost three years ago. Against Mainz, however, they have only managed one point in the last two games in front of their home crowd. Gladbach celebrated their last home win against FSV in January 2020 (3:1) and perhaps it is a good omen that the scorers at that time (2x Plea, 1x Neuhaus) will in all likelihood be on the pitch again on Sunday.

Gladbach Form & Balance Check

The hosts will be happy with their start to the season. Gladbach won both home games against Hoffenheim (3:1) and Hertha (1:0), while away there were two draws. The Foals will certainly be annoyed about the draw at Schalke (2:2), as an unnecessary penalty kick in the 90th minute cost them what they thought was a certain victory. On the other hand, everyone in the Gladbach camp will be very happy with the point gained in Munich.

Sommer with new record for saves

Yann Sommer had another great day against the record champions and even set a new Bundesliga record with an incredible 19 saves. However, he was unable to prevent Leroy Sané’s 1-1 equaliser (82nd) shortly before the end, but a win would have been too much of a good thing. Nevertheless, the Foals can be proud of their performance, because at the Allianz Arena, one or two other clubs will be significantly outclassed this season.

After four matchdays, Borussia is still unbeaten, which was last the case eight years ago under Lucien Favre. The start to the season has undoubtedly been a success, but now the Foals have to stay in contention and establish themselves in the top third of the table with further successes. A win against Mainz would also be extremely important, as the programme of the next few weeks (away in Freiburg, then at home against Leipzig) is really tough.

Gladbach facts & analysis

 – 8 points from 4 games
 – Last played 1:1 in Munich
 – Still unbeaten after 4 matchdays – last played 8 years ago under Favre

Mainz form & balance check

While FSV Mainz 05 have also made a good start to the season with seven points from four games, they need to get this one right. To start with, the 05ers narrowly prevailed 2-1 at VfL Bochum, who are still waiting for their first point after four games. This was followed by a very tough 0-0 draw against Union Berlin with few chances, before the 05ers also won the second away game at FC Augsburg 2-1 with a goal in the 90th minute. Together with the away win at Hertha BSC on matchday 33 last season, it was the third 2-1 away win in a row.

Inverted world compared to pre-season

But things are still not going well at home. The second home game against the disastrously started team from Leverkusen was lost last weekend with 0:3. In the previous season, things went the other way round. At that time, the Mainz team did not get anything going away from home, but at home they scored three points in almost every game.

At Borussia Park, the Mainzers want to continue their positive away trend. In the run-up to the game, however, there are justifiable doubts about this, as Gladbach is of a different calibre than their last away opponents Hertha, Bochum and Augsburg. The most recent direct comparison between the two teams will be encouraging. Mainz have won only one of their last twelve Bundesliga encounters against the Foals, but have not lost any of the last three.

Mainz facts & analysis

 – 7 points from 4 games.
 – Last lost 0:3 against Leverkusen
 – Last 3 away games won 2-1

Predicted line-up – last updated 2 September 2022

We don’t expect any surprises with the Foals. Newcomer Weigl will definitely not play from the start in his first game. Otherwise, it would be conceivable at most that Stindl starts on the ten for Neuhaus.

Bo Svensson will also hardly have to think about his starting eleven. Only between Hack and Tauer and between Lee and Fulgini the coach has to make a decision, because except Marcus Ingvartsen all men are on board.

Gladbach – Mainz direct comparison & statistics

The direct comparison is currently in favour of the Foals with 17 to ten wins and twelve draws. In recent years, however, Mainz have put up a brave fight. Last season, the teams drew 1-1 twice, with FSV winning the previous match 2-1 away from home. Before that, however, five matches in a row went to Borussia.

 – The average number of goals scored in the first half in matches between Borussia Mönchengladbach and FSV Mainz is 1.8.
 – When Borussia Mönchengladbach leads 1-0 in home matches, they win 76% of the matches.
 – A year ago, Borussia Mönchengladbach was in 11th position in the table with 4 points. Currently they are in position 6 (8).
