Borussia Mönchengladbach vs. RB Leipzig

The top match of Matchday 7 in the Bundesliga will be played at Borussia Park in Gladbach on Saturday evening. There, the Foals, who have been winless for three games, welcome Champions League representatives RB Leipzig, who have been coached by former Gladbacher Marco Rose for just over a week. The game kicks off at 6:30 pm.

Rose made his Bundesliga debut for his new employer last weekend. Against his former club Borussia Dortmund, RB showed a completely different performance from the first minute on compared to the last games, so that the 3:0 victory was ultimately also justified in terms of the amount. Borussia, on the other hand, drew goalless with SC Freiburg last Friday and thus remained without a win for the third time in a row and without scoring a goal of their own for the second time in a row.

Whether Gladbach will also fail to win against Leipzig in our opinion and what other predictions we would make for the top match of Matchday 7, you can now read in our Gladbach vs Leipzig tip.

Gladbach – Leipzig info:

 – Venue: Mönchengladbach, Borussia-Park
 – Competition: Bundesliga, Matchday 7

Gladbach Form & Balance Check

The home side will be neither particularly satisfied nor dissatisfied with the way the 2022/23 season has gone so far. In the first year under the management of Daniel Farke, some things are going better, but others not so well yet. One positive aspect so far is the defence, which has only conceded five goals in the first six Bundesliga games and has even faced FC Bayern at the Allianz Arena. Only Union Berlin (4 goals conceded) have allowed fewer so far.

Defensively much improved

After conceding 56 goals in the 2020/21 season and 61 goals in the 2021/22 season, Borussia have thus improved significantly in this respect. In contrast, the offensive play is clearly faltering. After five goals in the first two games, only two goals were scored in the last four games. Most recently, the Foals went scoreless twice in a row against Mainz (0:1) and in Freiburg (0:0).

To be fair, however, it has to be mentioned that Gladbach currently has to cope with some notable absences and the squad is not ideally equipped for such personnel problems. With Alassane Plea, Ko Itakura and Florian Neuhaus, three key players will again be unavailable against Leipzig. Even though the starting eleven is still absolutely respectable, these absences are extremely painful.

Gladbach facts & analysis

 – 9 points from 6 games
 – Last played 0:0 in Freiburg
 – Only 2 goals scored in last 4 matches

Leipzig form & balance check

RB Leipzig’s form curve continues to point upwards since Marco Rose took over. Last weekend, RB won match number one under the Leipzig-born manager 3-0 against Rose’s former club Borussia Dortmund, of all teams. Three days earlier, the Saxons lost 4-1 to Shakhtar Donetsk in the top flight under Domenico Tedesco.

In its Champions League debut against the reigning title holders Real Madrid, however, it was not enough to score. Leipzig were very stable for a long time at the Bernabeu, but were still beaten 2-0 in the end thanks to late goals from Federico Valverde (80th) and Marco Asensio (90.+1). With zero points after two games, advancing to the knockout phase will be a mammoth task.

Fond memories for Rose

In the league, it’s straight on for Marco Rose against his second ex-club in the Bundesliga. After the 3-0 win against Borussia Dortmund, he returns to Mönchengladbach on Saturday, where he had his most successful time as a coach in Germany so far. At the time, however, he could not resist the call of BVB. In retrospect, it is doubtful whether he would make the same decision again, given the rather short time he has worked with the club.

Leipzig facts & analysis

 – 8 points from 6 games
 – Last win 3:0 against Dortmund
 – Scored more than 2 goals against BVB for the first time this season

Predicted line-up – last update on 16 September 2022

Borussia are still without three key players in Florian Neuhaus, Ko Itakura and Alassane Plea. Therefore, the starting eleven will almost line up on its own. Friedrich and Elvedi will play in central defence, and we expect Christoph Kramer and newcomer Julian Weigl on the six.

RB might rotate slightly due to the English week. Compared to the CL game, Benjamin Henrichs, Kevin Kampl, Josko Gvardiol and Andre Silva are possible starting options. Missing through injury are Lukas Klostermann, Dani Olmo and Konrad Laimer.

Gladbach – Leipzig direct comparison & Statistics

Gladbach and Leipzig have already met twelve times. With seven wins to two and three draws, the Saxons currently have a clear lead. In the last four encounters, the home team has always come out on top. In the last two home games, Borussia have accordingly also managed the very first victories against RB.

 – Neither team conceded a goal in their last match.
 – The average number of goals scored in the first half in matches between Borussia Mönchengladbach and RB Leipzig is 1.8.
 – When RB Leipzig lead 0-1 in away matches, they win 73% of the matches.
 – The winner of the last meeting was Borussia Mönchengladbach.
