SC Freiburg – FSV Mainz 05

Our Freiburg – Mainz betting tip is: Both teams to score – 1.59 odds

  • Freiburg scored in the last eight games
  • Mainz scored in eight of the last nine duels
  • Both are vulnerable defensively – Freiburg 52 goals conceded & Mainz 47 goals conceded

In the Bundesliga, Bayer Leverkusen secured the championship early last weekend. However, the season is far from over for some teams. There are still five match days to go and some decisions are still to be made. SC Freiburg will host FSV Mainz 05 in an exceptionally late Sunday evening match. Find out who will win this clash and which bets are worthwhile for you in our Freiburg – Mainz betting tip.

Freiburg are still fighting to qualify for Europe. Participation in the European Cup would be a great farewell for coach Christian Streich, who will retire after this season. However, Freiburg are currently in the chasing pack and need a three-pointer at home to Mainz to underpin their claims to international business.

Mainz are still in the thick of the relegation battle. They have started to catch up and are currently in good form. They recently celebrated an impressive 4:1 win against TSG Hoffenheim and are edging ever closer to the safety zone.

Freiburg Form & Balance Check

Freiburg are far from having written off the international places. After a short dry spell a few weeks ago, the team has bounced back and has won two of its last three games.

Streich’s eleven are currently in eighth place with 39 points, level on points with Augsburg in seventh place and three points behind Frankfurt in sixth place. The Black Forest side had to bow out of the Europa League in mid-March, but this can also have a positive effect in the final spurt of the season, as the focus of the training week is entirely on the Bundesliga

Despite scoring goals, often just a joker

This season, Michael Gregortisch is one of SC’s key players. Especially in the second half of the season, he scored important goals and brought Freiburg a few points. Last weekend, he set up the winning goal for his team-mate Ritsu Doan and once again played a big part in Freiburg’s three-goal haul. The Austrian has eleven goals and six assists in all competitions.

Nevertheless, coach Streich is apparently not always satisfied with his protégé, as Gregoritsch has made a total of 18 substitute appearances. He often has to line up behind Lucas Höler and fights for minutes with Roland Sallai. He again recommended himself against Darmstadt, but Höler returns to the squad after a yellow card suspension. So it remains to be seen who Streich will opt for against Mainz in the end

Mainz Form & Balance Check

Mainz seem to have flipped the switch and have fully embraced the relegation battle. The recent win against Hoffenheim was their third win in four games and Mainz are unbeaten in four matches. As a result, they have moved past Cologne in the table and are currently in the relegation places with 26 points.

The non-relegation place is only one point away. The teams in the bottom half of the table are close together, as 13th place also has only three points more than the 05s. Should Mainz actually secure another win in Freiburg this weekend, they could already be out of the relegation places

The change of coach is bearing fruit

Coach Bo Henriksen has certainly played a big part in Mainz’s recent success. The Dane took over Mainz in mid-February in penultimate place in the table, level on points with bottom-placed Darmstadt. While Darmstadt have collected two points since then and relegation is probably no longer avoidable, Henriksen and his team have picked up a strong four wins and two draws from eight games.

The two defeats against Bayern and Leverkusen are bearable. The new coach has revived 05’s weak attacking play in particular. So far, it seems as if those responsible have done everything right with the change of coach. From Mainz’s point of view, it remains to be hoped that Henriksen and his team will be rewarded for their fightback and continue to play in the Bundesliga next year.

Mainz facts & analysis
  • 16th place in the table
  • Last game won
  • Unbeaten in four games

Freiburg operate in a 3-4-3 system. The back three of Manuel Gulde, Yannik Keitel and Lukas Kübler remains unchanged. In attack, Merlin Röhl, who was recently injured, and Höler, who was suspended against Darmstadt, return to the starting line-up. We also expect Gregoritsch to start. Rolland Sallai is suspended this time.

Mainz will also line up in a 3-4-3 formation. The starting eleven has established itself over the last few games and we expect the same eleven to start for the 3rd time in a row. Options from the bench are Karim Onisiwo, Silvan Widmer and Edimilson Fernandes. Josuha Guilavogui has only been a bench warmer of late
