SC Freiburg – FC Augsburg

After a break of more than two months, the Bundesliga returns in full swing. This weekend is already the third game in seven days for the 18 first division clubs. FC Augsburg will face SC Freiburg on Saturday afternoon at 15:30, who have become the Fuggerstädter’s fearsome opponents in recent years.

The Breisgauer have won all of their last four games against FCA and have not lost any of their last eight encounters. Freiburg are currently unbeaten against no other Bundesliga team for such a long time and only against VfB Stuttgart do the Sport-Club have an even longer winning streak (5) going. After only one win from the last four games, Augsburg could possibly be the perfect opponent to get Freiburg back on track before the away game in Dortmund. Whether we are convinced of this is now revealed in our Freiburg vs Augsburg tip.

 – Venue: Europa-Park Stadion, Freiburg

Freiburg Form & Balance Check

SC Freiburg finished the past Bundesliga season ranked sixth with 55 points and are currently on a very good path to top that performance. 31 points after 17 games is the best interim result since the start of the three-point rule. At one point, the Breisgau team was even one point behind Bayern in second place. It is noticeable that the Sport-Club is almost always convincing when it is the favourite in a match.

Strong favourites

The only four defeats Christian Streich’s team has suffered so far were against the top teams Bayern, Dortmund, Wolfsburg and Leipzig. Against Hertha, Gladbach, Hoffenheim and Frankfurt, it was only enough for a draw. The other games against Schalke, Mainz, Bremen & Co. have all been won by the Black Forest side. Against Augsburg, the SC wants to live up to its role as favourites once again.

Otherwise, the Breisgau club might fall into a small hole, because the feeling of not winning three games in a row is almost unfamiliar to the down-to-earth club from the south. This season, there have only been two winless games in a row. The last time Freiburg went winless three times in a row was in November 2021.

Freiburg facts & analysis

 – 31 points from 17 games
 – Last played 1:1 against Frankfurt
 – Last 4 duels with Augsburg won

Augsburg Form & Balance Check

With a 1-0 home win against Borussia Mönchengladbach, FC Augsburg ended their negative streak of eight consecutive winless Bundesliga games last Wednesday. In contrast to SC Freiburg, the Fuggerstädter curiously do not get their points against the weaker teams, but against the stronger ones. During the negative streak, Augsburg only took one point each against Wolfsburg, Leipzig and Union Berlin. Before that, FC Bayern and Bayer Leverkusen, among others, were beaten. Against teams like Stuttgart, Bochum or Cologne, however, FCA always came away empty-handed.

FCA before trend-setting weeks

Enrico Maaßen’s team took a big step forward in the fight to stay in the relegation zone with their latest home win. Augsburg are now 14th with 18 points, while pursuers Stuttgart (16), Bochum (16) and Hertha (14) all failed to win their last game. Ideally, the Fuggerstädter now want to start a series, because given the programme of the next few weeks, a few points are possible.

After the away game in Freiburg, Augsburg hosts the Leverkusen factory team, before the following opponents Mainz, Hoffenheim and Hertha are all beatable. FCA would be well advised to put themselves in a comfortable starting position at this stage, as their last five opponents Frankfurt, Bochum, Union, Dortmund and Gladbach are definitely tough.

Augsburg facts & analysis

 – 18 points from 17 games
 – Most recently won 1:0 against Gladbach
 – Recently ended negative streak of 8 winless games

Predicted line-up – last update on 27 January 2023

Freiburg coach Christian Streich made three changes in response to the 6-0 defeat in Wolfsburg, bringing on Lienhart, Kübler and Höler for Gulde, Kyereh and Jeong. Grifo returned to the squad after illness, but initially took a seat on the bench. We expect him back in the starting eleven against Augsburg. Midfielder Höfler is missing due to a yellow suspension, Keitel will replace him. Höler and Kyereh are the options on the ten.

FCA had a good game against Gladbach and will want to take this momentum with them. Dorsch celebrated his comeback after a month-long break, but is still some way from the starting eleven. With Vargas out for the time being, Demirovic, Berisha and new signing Beljo all come into the starting eleven
