Eintracht Frankfurt vs. 1. FC Köln

The third matchday is on the schedule this coming weekend and in the Bundesliga the start of the new season has already been successful. The fans were able to look forward to thrilling games and great goals on the first two weekends. Hopefully, it will continue in the same way over the next few days. On Sunday at 3:30 p.m., it comes to a duel between two teams that bring incredible fan camps with them. We are talking about Eintracht from Frankfurt and 1. FC Köln. Find out what we think about both teams and who we think will come out on top in our Frankfurt – Cologne tip.

Two matchdays have already been played in the top flight of German football and for the supporters of the 18 clubs it is slowly becoming worthwhile to take a look at the table. Eintracht Frankfurt are on one point after the 1:6 loss to Bayern and the 1:1 loss to Hertha last weekend. Their upcoming opponents from the Rhine have already picked up four points, which means that Baumgart’s team is currently in fourth place.

Frankfurt Form & Balance Check

Of course, expectations have gone up a notch after the sensational Europa League triumph. Nevertheless, fans would be well advised not to expect miracles. Frankfurt is still looking for its form and that is also reflected in the standings. Even if this is not particularly meaningful after two matchdays, 16th place should of course not live up to their own expectations. Last matchday, the Hessians had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Hertha BSC after an open game. Both teams had numerous chances to score the winner after the change of ends, but were unable to put any of them in the opponent’s goal.

Will the team break free?

The Eintracht from the Main recently had to cope with the loss of an absolute key player. Kostic moved to Turin and the Serb was a constant troublemaker in recent years. His crosses and assists must now be provided by others. If we take a look at Eintracht’s current performance, they are unfortunately in the process of extending their streak of winless games in the Bundesliga. Eintracht have been without a win for a season-high ten games – the longest streak in five years.

Frankfurt facts & analysis

 – Played 1:1 against Hertha last weekend.
 – Last season only got their 1st win on matchday 7
 – Winless in 10 BL games all season

Cologne form & balance check

Cologne FC are on a fast track right now and the pace the Cathedral City side are showing was not necessarily to be expected a few years ago. The last time FC was on international duty, they were relegated. Of course, the fans and players don’t want to experience that a second time. Coach Steffen Baumgart, however, is known for his ability to keep his players on the ground. During the week, the play-off first leg against Fehérvár FC was also on the agenda. FC lost against the Hungarians with 1:2 and now threaten to miss the group stage of the Conference League.

Is everything going too fast?

Even though coach Steffen Baumgart never tires of emphasising that he is not concerned with the millions that await FC if they reach the group stage with a view to the play-offs, the Cologne side are still in need of the money. It will also be exciting to see how FC will cope with the double burden. In our opinion, Cologne will go into the match against Eintracht slightly defensive. Nevertheless, no one at FC can be sad because the four points after two games are the best start to the season in five years. Back then, it was enough for fifth place under coach Stöger.

Cologne facts & analysis

 – Recently lost 2-1 to Fehérvár in the Conference League play-offs.
 – Last played 2:2 against Leipzig in the league
 – 4 points after 2 games – best start in 5 years

Predicted line-up – last update on 19 August 2022

Frankfurt Eintracht are likely to field their usual 3-4-2-1 this coming Sunday. Coach Glasner is likely to leave world champion Mario Götze on the bench for the time being and instead have Daichi Kamada and Jesper Lindström play behind the only front line. Both Rafael Borré and Randal Kolo Muani could start up front. However, due to the current form, we rather expect Kolo Muani.

The upcoming opponents from Cologne will most likely play in a 4-3-3. Young Eric Martel could form the double six together with Ellyes Skhiri. However, a more offensive variant with Ondrej Duda or Sargis Adamyan for Martel is also conceivable. In this case, Dejan Ljubicic would move one position back. On the right wing, Kingsley Schindler and Linton Maina are other possible options.
