Eintracht Frankfurt vs. Bayern Munich

After the spectacular 5:3 victory of FC Bayern in the Supercup against RB Leipzig and the many exciting cup games, the anticipation for the Bundesliga opener should have risen again among all fans of the round leather. Next Friday evening, the time has finally come – SG Eintracht Frankfurt and FC Bayern will open the 60th season of the Bundesliga at Deutsche Bank Park at 20:30.

The Bundesliga has had an official opening match since 2002 and in that time the reigning champions have never lost their opener (15 wins, five draws). One of the few draws, however, came last season when Bayern could not go beyond a 1-1 draw at Borussia Mönchengladbach in their opener. The last matchday defeat for the record champions was at the start of the 2011/12 season, also against the Foals (0:1).

With Eintracht Frankfurt, the Bavarians once again have a tough task ahead of them in this year’s season opener. The Eagles have strengthened their squad in the summer and are looking to upset the reigning champions at the start of the season. Whether we think this could work and what we think about this game is now revealed in our Frankfurt vs Bayern tip.

Frankfurt – Bayern Info

 – Date & Time: 05.08.2022, at 20:30 hrs.
 – Venue: Frankfurt, Deutsche Bank Park
 – Competition: Bundesliga, Matchday 1
 – TV broadcast: Sat1, DAZN

Frankfurt Form & Balance Check

SG Eintracht Frankfurt are entering the new season with high expectations. With the euphoria of the Europa League title behind them, the Eagles now want to mix it up in the Champions League and play a good role in the Bundesliga at the same time. The squad has been well strengthened for this project, both across the board and at the top. Mario Götze (PSV), Lucas Alario (Leverkusen), Randal Kolo Muani (Nantes) and Faride Alidou (HSV) strengthen the attack, Hrvoje Smolcic (HNK Rijeka), Jerome Onguene (RB Salzburg) and Aurelio Buta (Antwerp) were signed for the back line. In addition, loan players Jens Petter Hauge and Kristijan Jakic were signed permanently for a total of € 13.50 million.

SGE with strong start to the season

The newly formed Eintracht mastered their first competitive match of the season with flying colours. In the first round of the DFB Cup, the SGE won 4:0 against Magdeburg, a team promoted to the second division. Daichi Kamada was convincing in an unfamiliar role alongside Djibri Sow. Newcomer Mario Götze also played very well and made a very good duo with Jesper Lindström in attacking midfield in the 3-4-2-1 system. The first performance definitely makes you want more. On Friday, the SGE will have their first real acid test before the European Supercup against Real Madrid next Wednesday

Frankfurt facts & analysis

 – Won 4:0 against Magdeburg in the cup.
 – Squad very well strengthened in the summer
 – Last season scored more points away than at home

Bayern form & balance check

Not only Eintracht Frankfurt, but also FC Bayern are facing an extremely exciting season. After eight successful years in which the Munich side could always rely on the goals of Robert Lewandowski, the German record champions now have to do without their top scorer for the first time in what feels like an eternity. With the signing of Sadio Mané, however, a new attacking star was brought to Munich early in this transfer summer.

In the first two games for his new club, the Senegalese has already hinted at his incredible qualities and scored once each – in the test match against DC United and in the DFL Supercup in Leipzig. Nevertheless, it remains to be seen whether Bayern will be able to match the incredible goal output of recent years without the now 33-year-old Pole. In the last three seasons, they have scored a total of an incredible 296 goals (100, 99 and 97). The goal record from the 1971/22 season (101) could not be broken, however.

Musiala with outstanding performance

In the Supercup against Leipzig, Bayern showed for the first time that they are capable of scoring many goals even without Lewandowski. Perhaps his departure is also a welcome chance for players like Jamal Musiala to step out of the shadows and play themselves more prominently. In any case, ‘Bambi’ made a big impression with his performance in the Supercup. In this form, he can no longer be excluded from the starting eleven in this competitive situation.

Bayern facts & analysis

 – Supercup won against Leipzig 5:3
 – Lost 2 of the last 3 duels with Frankfurt
 – Not lost on matchday 1 since 2011

Predicted line-up – last update on 4 August 2022

Even though Daichi Kamada had a really good game against Magdeburg, he’s probably a bit too offensive in central midfield against Bayern. Accordingly, we expect Sebastian Rode next to Djibril Sow in the centre. The rest of the team could remain unchanged for the time being. Only newcomer Aurelio Buta is currently injured.

Bayern could start the season in an unfamiliar 4-4-2 system, with Thomas Müller and Jamal Musiala playing more as attacking midfielders. Instead of Benjamin Pavard, newcomer Noussair Mazraoui could also start at right back in the back four. Sadio Mané and Serge Gnabry will play up front. Kingsley Coman is suspended, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Leon Goretzka and Bouna Sarr are out due to injury.

The overall direct comparison is unsurprisingly in favour of Bayern, who have won 66 of the 127 duels. 35 times Eintracht won, 26 times the points were shared. In recent years, however, Eintracht has celebrated one or two surprising successes. Last season, the SGE won the first leg 2-1 away from home on matchday 7, having already won the return leg 2-1 in the 2020/21 season. The 5-1 win in November 2019 will also be long remembered by both sets of fans.
