Borussia Dortmund vs. VfL Wolfsburg

On Saturday, we can expect a very interesting duel in the Bundesliga between two teams for whom nothing is really at stake. Borussia Dortmund welcomes VfL Wolfsburg and for both the season is already more or less decided. Dortmund will most likely be runners-up, as the gap of nine points is simply too large. Even if they still play Bayern in a direct duel, there is only a theoretical, but no practical chance of winning the title.

Wolfsburg, on the other hand, can take a deep breath after last weekend’s important home win and, with a bit of caution, celebrate staying in the class. The victory has increased the lead over the sixteenth-placed team in the table to eight points. Nevertheless, Wolfsburg will be anything but satisfied with the way the current season has gone, having only reached the Champions League last year. Find out who we see ahead in this match on Saturday in our Dortmund – Wolfsburg betting tips.

Dortmund Form & Balance Check

Even though the season has been really solid in terms of points at national level, Dortmund will not be able to draw a positive conclusion after the 34th matchday. Although the chances of winning the title were by all means great, BVB has beaten itself time and again. Whether in the DFB Cup against St. Pauli, in the Champions League against Sporting or in the Europa League against Glasgow Rangers – in each of these games, the Black and Yellows were the favourites and were deservedly eliminated in the end. In the league, too, Borussia were never able to take advantage of Bayern’s mistakes and never actually came close to the record champions at any point.

Many question marks before the new season

The Champions League will be reached. That is the only positive thing BVB can take from this year. Otherwise, an intense summer awaits Aki Watzke & Co. Many personnel questions are unresolved, the departure of Haaland is probably only a formality. The question of the coach does not seem to be completely off the table either, even though the lack of results has been compounded by a lot of bad luck with injuries. In the end, however, this cannot be taken into consideration and it will be very exciting to see whether Niklas Süle can stabilise Dortmund’s fragile defence. In addition, Karim Adeyemi would significantly raise the level in the offensive, as the young international is extremely strong in dribbling and finishing. Qualities that are desperately sought after in today’s football.

Dortmund facts & analysis

 – They won the last game 2-0 in Stuttgart.
 – Dortmund are the second best home team in the league
 – BVB have not drawn at their own stadium once this season

Wolfsburg Form & Balance Check

It seems as if manager Jörg Schmadtke’s speech has had the desired effect. Last week, the former Bundesliga professional took the team to task after they had lacked any verve and consequently lost three games in a row. But on Saturday, the Wolves showed a different face and deservedly won 4-0 at home over Bielefeld. This probably also allowed them to bury their last relegation worries and plan for first-class football next year. However, it is now a question of bringing the season to a sensible and dignified end.

Will the upheaval follow in the summer?

Wolfsburg are also facing many changes in the summer. Presumably, the club expects some departures of key players like Baku and/or Lacroix. There will also be discussions about keeping the veterans on. In addition, the question of the coach has not yet been completely resolved, because the team was not really convincing under Florian Kohfeldt. The points average under the former Werder coach is just 1.05. The 39-year-old can’t really score points with that – in the truest sense of the word.

Wolfsburg facts & analysis

 – 14 points from 12 second-round games so far.
 – In the second half of the season Wolfsburg score 1.33 goals per game
 – Away from home, Wolves have picked up 14 of the 34 points so far this season

Predicted line-up – last update on 14 April 2022

Despite some absentees, Borussia still have an extremely beatable squad at their disposal. Guerreiro had to take a break during the week, but is presumably ready for action. Malen, Hummels, Dahoud and Reyna are still missing. Haaland will start at striker and wants to finally score his first goal since his comeback. After the good performance against Bielefeld, there is really no reason for the Wolves to change anything (at least not performance-wise).

Dortmund – Wolfsburg direct comparison & statistics

As already indicated above, Wolfsburg have been the Black-Yellow’s absolute favourite opponents in recent years and this is also reflected in the direct comparison. Dortmund has won a full 30 of 49 encounters. Wolfsburg have only been victorious nine times, the last time being seven years ago.

 – Dortmund won the first leg 3-1.
 – In the last 10 direct duels, BVB have picked up 28 out of a possible 30 points against the Wolves – against no other team in this period have there been more
 – Wolfsburg’s last away win in Dortmund dates back to December/2012
