Borussia Dortmund vs. VfB Stuttgart

After the international break, the 12th matchday in the Bundesliga is on the agenda and Borussia Dortmund welcome VfB Stuttgart to their home Signal Iduna Park on Saturday afternoon. Kick-off is at 15:30.

We can undoubtedly expect a very intense encounter. The Swabians won a strong 54.9 per cent of their defensive duels in the first eleven match days despite the moderate results – that is the best value in the Bundesliga! In second place in this ranking is BVB with 54.2 per cent. Find out who we think will win the duel of the two-fight champions and what else we think about this match in our Dortmund vs Stuttgart tip.

Dortmund -Stuttgart Tip

The starting situation is clear. BVB go into this match as the heavy favourites and will be looking for their seventh win in their seventh Bundesliga home match of the season. For VfB, the only role on Saturday is that of the glaring underdog. Due to the many injuries, the Swabians have had to field many players from the second row in recent weeks and have not really been successful with them. If the away game in Dortmund is also lost, VfB Stuttgart would lose three games in a row for the first time this season. This scenario is to be prevented with all power.

Dortmund Form & Balance Check

Whoever takes a look at the current Bundesliga table should think that the world is actually quite alright at BVB. However, the reality is somewhat different. In the Champions League, the Black and Yellows still have to tremble after the two defeats against Ajax Amsterdam (4:1; 1:3) and also with regard to the Bundesliga, the house is gradually hanging askew after the 2:1 defeat in Leipzig. In the top match of the 11th matchday, BVB was the clearly inferior team at RB Leipzig. In retrospect, the Dortmunders only owe the close result to the opponent’s negligent use of chances.

Home power BVB

Week after week, it can be seen that Borussia Dortmund is a completely different team without Erling Haaland. The two league games after the Norwegian’s injury were won, but an away win at Arminia Bielefeld (1:3) and a home win against Cologne (2:0) can be classified as must-wins even without the Norwegian. But it will be a while before the 1.94m tall striker can play again.

But even without him, BVB would like to set a new club record on Saturday after two competitive match defeats in a row. Borussia have won all six Bundesliga home games under Marco Rose so far – seven home wins to start a Bundesliga season is unprecedented. In fact, Dortmund has already won ten Bundesliga home games in a row. The best record is twelve consecutive home victories dating back to 1994.

Dortmund Facts & Analysis
 – 24 points from 11 games
 – Last lost 2:1 in Leipzig
 – Last 2 competitive games lost (more last 2017 under Peter Bosz, 3)
 – Last 10 BL home games all won

Stuttgart form & balance check

The many injury worries have left their mark on VfB Stuttgart. After eleven matchdays, the beleaguered Swabians find themselves in 15th place in the table and could end up in a relegation spot for the first time this season after the next matchday. In any case, the form curve has recently been pointing downwards again. After the goalless draw against Bochum, the 3:1 win against Hoffenheim and the two 1-1 draws in Mönchengladbach and against Union Berlin, VfB wanted to remain unbeaten in the duels with relegation candidates Augsburg and Bielefeld and work their way up the table. However, nothing came of it.

Swabians urgently need a sense of achievement

Pellegrino Matarazzo’s side were beaten 4-1 in Augsburg after a 1:1 half-time draw and then lost 1:0 at home to previously winless Arminia from Bielefeld. Of the last ten Bundesliga games, VfB has won only one. Hopes of a turnaround at home to Borussia Dortmund, of all teams, are likely to be limited.

However, a look back at the last guest game in Dortmund should be encouraging. On 12 December 2020, VfB Stuttgart swept BVB out of the stadium with an incredible 1:5. For the Black and Yellows, it was the highest defeat in the club’s history. In addition, the Swabians have only ever won more against Eintracht Frankfurt (42) than against Borussia Dortmund (40).

Stuttgart facts & analysis
 – 10 points from 11 games
 – Last lost 0:1 against Bielefeld
 – Only won against Frankfurt more often (42) than against Dortmund (40)
 – Last away match in Dortmund won 1:5

Predicted line-up – last update on 18 November 2021

For BVB, Raphael Guerreiro could return to the starting eleven after overcoming a torn muscle fibre. Otherwise, it would probably come down to a three-man backline with Marin Pongracic as the third centre-back. Stefan Tigges could also play in place of Donyell Malen. Nico Schulz, Emre Can, Marius Wolf, Erling Haaland, Giovanni Reyna and Mahmoud Dahoud are still missing due to injury.

On the VfB side, defender Konstantinos Mavropanos returns. Instead of Roberto Massimo and Atakan Karazor, Tanguy Coulibaly and/or Philipp Förster could also start. In addition to Daniel Didavi and Al Ghaddioui, Omar Marmoush and Matteo Klimowicz are also available in the front line. Sasa Kalajdzic, Mohamed Sankoh, Enzo Millot and Erik Thommy will continue to be missing.

Dortmund -Stuttgart direct comparison & Statistics

The direct comparison is almost even, but with 45 to 43 wins it is very close in favour of BVB. 24 duels ended in a draw. The balance of the last five encounters is clearly in favour of the Black and Yellows with four victories to one. VfB’s only victory, however, came in the last encounter at Borussia’s home ground. Thanks to an outstanding Silas (two goals) and goals from Förster, Coulibaly and Gonzalez, the Swabians ultimately won 1:5.

In the Bundesliga, Borussia Dortmund’s winning streak at home has lasted 6 games.
 – The comparisons between the two clubs last season: 1-5 (home for Borussia Dortmund) and 2-3 (home for VfB Stuttgart).
 – Attention, goals are likely to be scored today: VfB Stuttgart have always conceded a goal in their last 6 matches.
 – Borussia Dortmund: Thomas Meunier has collected the most yellow cards (4). For VfB Stuttgart it’s Tanguy Coulibaly (4).
