Borussia Dortmund vs. Bayer Leverkusen

The Bundesliga returns from the summer break with a top match worthy of the name. On Saturday evening, Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen, the second and third from the previous season, will meet. Kick-off at Signal Iduna Park is at 6:30 pm.

The sporting start to the new season could not have been more different for both teams. While Dortmund advanced to the second round of the DFB Cup last Friday with a 3-0 win over TSV 1860 München, the Werkself lost 4-3 at SV Elversberg, a team promoted to the third division, at the weekend.

Find out what conclusions we draw from the cup performances for the head-to-head clash and who we see ahead on Saturday in our Dortmund vs Leverkusen betting tips.

Dortmund Form & Balance Check

After ten championship titles in a row, BVB would like to finally break FC Bayern’s streak this season. To achieve this goal, Dortmund strengthened themselves massively in all parts of the team in the summer. Although they had to let their star striker Erling Haaland (Manchester City) go, they were able to bring in Niklas Süle (FC Bayern), Nico Schlotterbeck (SC Freiburg), Salih Özcan (1. FC Köln), Karim Adeyemi (RB Salzburg) and Sebastien Haller (Ajax Amsterdam), five newcomers who are all candidates for a regular place. Haller (testicular cancer), at least, will be missing from Dortmund for the foreseeable future. The black and yellow team are therefore still looking for a replacement for the centre of attack. With Edin Terzic, there is also a new, old coach on the BVB sideline.

Pure dominance against Munich Lions

In the first round of the DFB Cup, Dortmund never left any questions about the winner of the match. Already in the eighth minute, the eye-catching Donyell Malen gave Dortmund the lead. After that, Dortmund dismantled Munich at will and had already made the final score 3-0 in the 35th minute of the match with goals from Jude Bellingham (31st) and Karim Adeyemi (35th). At the end of the game, BVB had 83 per cent possession, 25:1 shots and 15:2 corners.

Dortmund facts & analysis

 – Second in the past Bundesliga season (8 points behind Bayern Munich).
 – Won 13 of 17 home games (4 defeats)
 – Scored 52 goals in 17 games at home (Bundesliga best)

Leverkusen form & balance check

This is really not how the Werkself had imagined their start to the season. They lost 3:4 in the DFB Cup against third division newcomer SV Elversberg at the weekend. It was Bayer’s first first-round exit since the 2011/12 season, when they also lost 4-3 after extra time against Dynamo Dresden.

Barely any transfers during the summer break

Compared to the other three Champions League participants from the Bundesliga (Bayern, Dortmund & Leipzig), Bayer kept their feet still in the current transfer phase. With Adam Hlosek, the Leverkusen team signed only one real new player. The 19-year-old striker came from Sparta Prague for a transfer fee of around € 13 million. At the same time, the Werkself was able to keep all the key players from the previous season. The only notable departure was that of Lucas Alario (€ 6 million) to Eintracht Frankfurt.

Leverkusen facts & analysis

 – First-round exit in the DFB Cup (3:4 against SV Elversberg).
 – Third in the past Bundesliga season
 – with 32 points from 17 away games, the second strongest away team of the past season

Predicted line-up – last update on 5 August 2022

Compared to the cup match in Munich, we expect BVB with one change in the starting eleven. Matts Hummels is expected to take the place of the injured Niklas Süle (muscle injury) in central defence. Instead of Yousoufa Moukoko, another winger could also start, which would result in Adeyemi or Malen taking the place in the centre.

Although Leverkusen were anything but defensively solid in the game against Elversberg, we don’t expect Gerardo Seoane to deviate from his 4-2-3-1 system. In central defence, however, Odilon Kossounou is likely to make way for Jonathan Tah.

With Sebastien Haller (testicular cancer) and Florian Wirtz (cruciate ligament rupture), important key players on both sides will be out for several more months.

Dortmund – Leverkusen direct comparison & Statistics

While many goals are certain in this duel, the winner is by no means. Of the last six duels, both teams won three each. In addition, both times last season the away team was successful, Dortmund with 4:3 in Leverkusen, Leverkusen in the second leg with 5:2 at BVB. In the overall balance, however, the Black and Yellows still have the lead. They have won 39 of their 92 matches so far, while Leverkusen have won 31 and drawn 22.

 – in each of the last 9 duels at least 3 goals were scored.
 – in 5 of the last 8 duels both teams scored at least twice
 – BVB won 6 of last 7 home matches against B04
 – BVB scored 25 goals in last 7 home matches against B04
