Borussia Dortmund vs. Bayer Leverkusen

It’s the weekend of the top games in the Bundesliga and besides the clash between Bayern and Leipzig, the next treat awaits on Sunday afternoon. Borussia Dortmund welcomes Bayer Leverkusen and thus the second in the table meets the third. BVB has a big lead over the Werkself, but both teams actually have to win this game. The home side does not want to lose touch with Bayern and every further defeat is one too many. The gap to the record champions is 6 points and Bayern are currently making few mistakes, so Dortmund must not allow themselves any.

Leverkusen, on the other hand, want to consolidate their third place and the best way to do that is with 3 points on Sunday. However, Bayer’s performance has always been extremely erratic and they simply drop points too often. Most recently, however, there was another strong 5:1 victory over Augsburg. Find out who we think has the better cards in this top match in our Dortmund – Leverkusen betting tips.

Dortmund Form & Balance Check

You just can’t figure out Dortmund this season and for some time now. First they come back fantastically in Frankfurt after a 0:2 deficit, then they shoot Freiburg out of the stadium, only to be knocked out in the cup against a (good) second division team. On the last matchday they won 3:2 in a turbulent match against Hoffenheim. They now have 9 points from 3 games in the second half of the season and have minimised the gap to the leaders by 3 points. But it will be a Herculean task to make up these 6 points.

Haaland showing nerves?

Recently, the brawny Norwegian was the talk of the town once again when a transfer discussion arose publicly and Haaland voiced slight criticism of the BVB management. He felt under pressure to make a decision regarding the summer and promptly the 21-year-old was no longer as strong as in the weeks and months before. He still scored his goals, but especially in the cup against St. Pauli his performance was very questionable. Haaland was hardly able to secure balls and was not really a factor. Now he is probably out for the time being and it is not yet clear when the striker will return.

Dortmund facts & analysis
 – They are the best team of the second half of the season
 – They have always conceded at least one goal in their last 5 competitive matches
 – Dortmund are the strongest team at home in the league

Leverkusen form & balance check

Just like Dortmund, you just can’t figure Leverkusen out. There are usually only a few days between negligent defeats and glorious victories, and the team always has two major problems. On the one hand, there is the often miserable use of chances, as in the narrow 2:1 victory against Gladbach, and on the other hand, the Werkself makes inexplicable defensive mistakes that cost them important points. As a result, they are “only” in 3rd place, 8 points behind Dortmund. Accordingly, a win at the weekend would do well to consolidate 3rd place and put some pressure on Dortmund.

Patrick Schick is in outstanding form

Generally, the Werkself’s showpiece is their offence. Besides the outstanding Florian Wirtz and Moussa Diaby, who scored a treble last weekend, Patrick Schick stands out once again. The Czech has already scored 18 goals in the season and confirms his strong form from the European Championship, when he became top scorer. In terms of finishing, the 26-year-old is one of the best strikers in Europe at the moment and it will be very interesting to see if Bayer manage to keep Schick beyond the summer.

Leverkusen facts & analysis
 – They have won two games in a row recently
 – Leverkusen are the second best away team in the league
 – Patrick Schick is the top scorer with 18 goals

Predicted line-up – last update on 4 February 2022

The home side still have a chance of bringing on Haaland, but it’s possible that they won’t take any risks and the Norwegian will sit on the bench for the time being. Thorgan Hazard would be available as a replacement. Otherwise, we do not expect any changes at BVB. Leverkusen coach Seoane is spoilt for choice and could once again give Bellarabi a chance in attack. Newcomer Azmoun is not expected to be available yet. Tapsoba is still at the Africa Cup.

Dortmund – Leverkusen direct comparison & Statistics

Leverkusen have had few wins in Dortmund in recent years and the Werkself’s last victory at Signal-Iduna-Park dates back to 2014. Since then, BVB have won every home match against Leverkusen. In general, however, the direct comparison is relatively even and in 85 Bundesliga games BVB have won 34 and Leverkusen 29 times.

 – In the first leg Dortmund won 4:3
 – In 7 of the last 8 direct duels, there have always been at least 4 goals scored.
 – In 8 of the last 10 encounters, both have always scored at least one goal
