Borussia Dortmund vs. RB Leipzig

The Bundesliga returns from the international break with a cracker. Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig will meet in the top match on Saturday at 18:30. When the two teams last played against each other at Signal Iduna Park, spectacle was inevitable. The last results from Dortmund’s point of view: 3:2, 3:3, 4:1 and 2:3.

For both teams, however, there is more at stake this weekend than just thrilling Germany. With a six-point gap to FC Bayern München, Dortmund can still hope for their first championship since the 2011/12 season. RB Leipzig, on the other hand, will be looking to defend their newly-acquired Champions League place. Find out who we see in front in the head-to-head clash and what other predictions we have for this great match in our Dortmund vs Leipzig betting tips.

Dortmund Form & Balance Check

BVB are six points behind FC Bayern in the Bundesliga table after their 1-1 draw in Cologne. However, it is not only the Borussians who have a difficult game ahead of them this weekend. The Munich team has to play SC Freiburg in Breisgau. In addition, the two heavyweights of German football will meet once again in a direct duel on matchday 30. The hope for the first championship in ten years is therefore still alive in Dortmund.

Reus back – Haaland drops out

Against RB Leipzig, Borussia Dortmund can once again rely on their team captain. Marco Reus missed the last four Bundesliga games for the Black and Yellows due to illness. A look at the statistics shows how important the 32-year-old is for his team. With Reus, BVB scored 23 goals in six league games in 2022 (3.83 goals per game). Without its captain, BVB scored only once in each of the last four league games.

Dortmund, on the other hand, will have to do without its other top scorer this weekend. Erling Haaland returned injured from his international match with Norway and will definitely be absent on Saturday. The 21-year-old had been absent from BVB only recently with muscular problems, but returned to action in the last three Bundesliga games. However, Haaland was unable to score a goal in any of the three games. It was the first time since his move to Dortmund that the forward tank went three league games in a row without scoring.

Dortmund facts & analysis

– Won 4 of last 6 Bundesliga games (2 draws).
– scored exactly 1 goal in 4 league games in a row
– conceded only 2 goals in last 6 league matches

Leipzig form & balance check

RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund are the two strongest second-round teams in the Bundesliga. Both have picked up 23 points in ten games since the winter break (FC Bayern Munich: 20 points). However, the Bullen (27:8 goals) have the slightly better goal difference compared to the Borussians (26:12 goals). The fact that Leipzig did not finish higher up in the table is due to a messed-up first half of the season, in which they only finished in tenth place.

In the second half of the season, however, things are going well. RB only lost at FC Bayern Munich in 2022 (2:3). Since then, the Bullen are unbeaten in six games, winning four of them and conceding no more than one goal in any of them.

Away weakness turned off

In the first half of the season, Leipzig were particularly troubled by their away weaknesses. They did not win any of their eight games away from home and only picked up four points. But there is no sign of that in the second half of the season. In the new year, RB won four of their five away games, including 6:1 victories over Hertha and Fürth in Berlin.

Leipzig facts & analysis

– Won 7 of 10 league games in 2022 (2 draws & 1 defeat).
– Won 3 away matches in a row (including 6:1 against Hertha & 6:1 against Fürth)
– 4 goals conceded in last 6 league matches

Predicted line-up – last update on 1 April 2022

We expect BVB to play in a 4-3-3 system on Saturday with Marius Wolf and Raphael Guerreiro in the two full-back positions. Should Axel Witsel be withdrawn from midfield into defence, the Black and Yellows could also line up in a 3-4-3 system with the above line-up. In the offensive, captain Marco Reus is back. Erling Haaland, on the other hand, is missing following the injury he sustained during the international break. And Thorgan Hazard also returned to BVB with an injury. It is not yet clear whether he will make the starting eleven on Saturday. Instead of him, Giovanni Reyna or Julian Brandt could play on the right wing.

RB Leipzig currently only has one injured player, international Lukas Klostermann. As in the last games, we expect the Saxons to play a 3-4-1-2 system. The Dortmund defence should pay particular attention to the playful Dani Olmo and Christopher Nkunku. With Dominik Szoboszlai, Emil Forsberg and Yussuf Poulsen, the Saxons can also add top-class players from the bench.

Dortmund – Leipzig direct comparison & Statistics

Although RB Leipzig took the Bundesliga by storm, the overall record between Dortmund and the Bullen is clearly in favour of the Black and Yellows. Out of twelve encounters, they won a total of seven, while Leipzig “only” won three. Two encounters ended in draws. The most significant duel between the two took place last year. In the final of the DFB Cup, Dortmund dismantled the Saxons 4:1. Leipzig has not yet been able to take equal revenge for this, but at least won the match in the first leg 2-1.

– Borussia Dortmund has not lost any of their last 3 home matches against RB Leipzig
– RB Leipzig have won only 1 of their last 9 meetings.
– At least 5 goals scored in each of the last 4 matches between Dortmund and Leipzig at Signal Iduna Park
– In the last 4 meetings, both teams have scored at least once
