Werder Bremen vs. FC Augsburg

After a week packed with top European football, league action awaits the teams again this weekend. In the Bundesliga, the sixth matchday kicks off with a clash between two teams who can only dream of international competition. Werder Bremen, the promoted team, will receive FC Augsburg. For both of them, the only thing that matters this season is staying in the league.

But Bremen’s start to the season has been more than promising, with SVW already having eight points after five matchdays. On the last matchday, they won 2:0 in Bochum in an incredibly competitive game, keeping a clean sheet for the first time this season. Augsburg, on the other hand, are already stuck in the cellar, having won only one of their first five games and having a lot of problems developing a scoring threat. For the Fuggerstädter in particular, this game is of enormous importance. Whether we think FCA will take the next points, you can read in this Bremen – Augsburg tip.

Bremen Form & Balance Check

With the victory on the last matchday in Bochum, the start of the season can finally be described as successful. Werder convinces with a courageous style of play and seems to be superior to many teams, especially physically. Seven of the twelve goals scored came after the 85th minute, five of them in injury time. That is a Bundesliga record at this point. Niclas Füllkrug, who is at the top of the scoring list with five goals, and Oliver Burke, who has been substituted in every game so far and has also scored three goals directly, stand out. But of course the Bremen team also showed some weaknesses. Especially in the defeat against Frankfurt, these were exposed.

Werder must always go to the limit

The SVW has already felt a few times how consistently lack of concentration is punished in the top flight. Until last weekend’s win in Bochum, Werder always conceded at least two goals. This was often preceded by individual mistakes. Marco Friedl had problems again and again, Milos Vejlkovic also showed that he can rarely keep up with big opponents. But when Werder manage to play at the limit of their performance, they always posed problems for their opponents. Offensively it looks really good so far, already twelve goals after five match days not even Leipzig or Dortmund managed.

Bremen facts & analysis

 – Second best offence in the league.
 – Not yet scored a goal between the 30th and 85th minute this season.
 – Currently in 8th place in the table

Augsburg Form & Balance Check

So far it has to be said that the expected difficult season has come true for Augsburg. Actually, the responsible persons made good transfers and did not lose any key players except for Gregoritsch. But under the new coach Enrico Maaßen, Augsburg are simply not creating any goal-scoring opportunities worth mentioning, and have created only seven real chances in five games. This is symbolised by three goals scored in the season, the fewest of any Bundesliga team. On top of that, the opening programme was feasible on paper and should have yielded more than these three points.

How much time will Maaßen get?

The 0:2 last weekend against Hertha was the low point of the season so far. Over 90 minutes, Augsburg only created one real goal-scoring chance, which newcomer Mergim Berisha narrowly missed. After the game, the players were at a loss. This automatically raises the question of whether there is a good fit between the team and the coach. The last few years have also been anything but good in Augsburg; for several seasons, it has been exclusively against relegation.

But part of the truth is that the Fuggerstädter have had a lot of bad luck with injuries. At the moment, five regular players are missing, who are largely responsible for Augsburg’s success. Nevertheless, things could get tight for Enrico Maaßen after another defeat on Friday.

Augsburg facts & analysis

 – Scored all three goals of the season away from home so far.
 – Failed to score in three of five games this season
 – Currently 16th in the table

Predicted line-up – last update on 8 September 2022

Not only Augsburg, but also Werder will probably have to do without two key players, as Leo Bittencourt is still out and Jens Stage was injured in training during the week. We therefore expect the exact same line-up as against Bochum, even if some players definitely appeared unsettled and would have been replaced by one of those just mentioned.

Enrico Maaßen is forced to make another change, as Arne Maier is out injured. Julian Baumgartlinger could be in the starting eleven for the first time. Ruben Vargas is also an option after his injury.

Bremen – Augsburg direct comparison & Statistics

For a long time, Augsburg were Werder’s fearful opponents, but the tide has turned in recent years. All in all, however, the direct comparison goes easily to Augsburg with ten wins from 20 games. Werder walked off the field as winners eight times.

 – Bremen won five of the last seven duels.
 – Werder always scored against Augsburg in the last six duels
 – The Green-Whites have scored the most goals on average this season (4.4 per match)
