Bayern Munich vs. VfL Wolfsburg

The coming matchday is here and the first half of the Bundesliga is over. On Friday evening, the record champions from Munich and the struggling Wolfsburg team will kick off the 17th and final matchday of the first half of the season. The visitors in particular are probably longing for this winter break, as things could not have gone worse in recent weeks. The Wolves have lost all of their last 6 competitive matches and the 2:3 defeat against Cologne during the week was the next major setback. They were also eliminated from the Champions League as the last team in their group and will therefore not spend the winter in the international arena.

The Munich team does not have any of these problems, and after the 5:0 win against Stuttgart, they still lead the table. With 40 points after 16 games, the Munich team can certainly be satisfied, especially since they got a feasible draw with Salzburg in the last 16 of the Champions League. Whether we believe in the next sovereign victory of the Bavarians, you can find out in this Bayern – Wolfsburg Tip.

Bayern Form & Balance Check

Since the unnecessary defeat against Augsburg 4 weeks ago, Bayern have pulled themselves together and have played tremendously confidently since then. There followed 6 wins in a row and especially the 5-0 win during the week was convincing. But probably the most important victory was against Borussia Dortmund, when the team won 3:2 at the Signal Iduna Park and was thus able to distance itself from the Black and Yellows. Now the lead over Dortmund is 6 points and that is hard to catch up with Bayern’s current form.

Can Bayern win the Champions League?

Not everything has been decided nationally yet, but it already looks very much like the record champions will lift the championship trophy at the end of the season for the 10th time in a row. Accordingly, the top division is once again the competition that Munich fans are getting nervous about. After the triumph of 2020 and last year’s bitter elimination against Paris, the FCB wants to ascend the European throne again as quickly as possible. With Salzburg now comes a team in the round of 16 against whom progress is a must. We are curious to see what happens from the quarter-finals onwards.

Bayern facts & analysis
 – Top goalscorer is Robert Lewandowski with 18 goals.
 – Bayern have won all of their last 6 competitive matches
 – They have scored in every game so far this season

Wolfsburg form & balance check

The VfL is currently going through probably the most difficult time since the relegation in 2018. Despite an outstanding squad, the team actually does not manage to deliver their level consistently. Defensively, Wolfsburg are extremely vulnerable. Last season, this was Wolfsburg’s greatest strength, but now they are conceding too many goals and have lost all of their last 6 competitive games. Something has to happen urgently so that the team doesn’t completely lose touch with the top and possibly find itself in the relegation battle.

The coaching effect has fizzled out

Wolfsburg was the first club to pull the emergency brake early on and change coaches. With Florian Kohfeldt, a promising coach was hired who was sacked last season after an initially successful period and a bitter end at Werder Bremen. Now he has taken over for Mark van Bommel and after 3 competitive wins from the first 3 games, the team crashed and lost every single game since. We are curious to see if Florian Kohfeldt will go into the winter break with the team, or if VfL will decide to change coaches again.

Wolfsburg facts & analysis
 – 6 competitive defeats in a row
 – In the last 7 games, the team has always conceded at least 2 goals
 – So far they have picked up 10 points away from home

Predicted line-up – last update on 15 Dec 2021

Bayern are likely to make one personnel change after their convincing performance against Stuttgart, namely Coman got injured in the first half and had to come off. Leroy Sané will start on the wing for the Frenchman. Wolfsburg could make a few changes. Mbabu will probably return to the starting eleven, with Baku moving up one position. Guilavogui is likely to start in the centre and Renato Steffen is expected to use his experience to put pressure on the wing.
