Bayern Munich vs. VfL Wolfsburg

1,015 days after his involuntary farewell to FC Bayern, Niko Kovac has his first reunion with his former club. At the end of the 2nd matchday of the Bundesliga, he and VfL Wolfsburg will be guests at the Allianz Arena in Munich, kick-off is early Sunday evening at 17:30.

But he probably won’t be really looking forward to this away trip. FC Bayern’s offensive is brutally strong even without Robert Lewandowski, and at the start of the season it scored goals non-stop against RB Leipzig (5:3) and most recently against Eintracht Frankfurt (6:1). Only in the 1976/77 season (twelve goals after two games) did Bayern start a new season with more goals.

In the last three years, however, FC Bayern has never won the first two Bundesliga games of a season. The last time that happened was in 2018/19, of course under Niko Kovac. Our Bayern vs Wolfsburg tip reveals whether Bayern will start with two wins again this season.

Bayern Form & Balance Check

Whoever thought Bayern would struggle to score goals without their long-serving striker Robert Lewandowski was impressively proved wrong in the first two competitive games of the season. Both in the Supercup against Leipzig and in the Bundesliga against Frankfurt, Bayern decided the game by the break with three and five goals respectively. The offensive players seemed to be let off the leash. Jamal Musiala, who scored three goals in his first two competitive matches, was the best FC Bayern player to do that.

‘Bambi’ plays his way into the limelight

With a total of 13 Bundesliga goals, the youngster recently even set Uli Hoeneß’ U-20 Bayern record. By now, no one doubts that ‘Bambi’ has a great career ahead of him. Newcomer Sadio Mané did not miss out on the start of the season either. He has played three games for Bayern so far (Test, Supercup, Bundesliga) and scored once in each match. Against Wolfsburg and former coach Niko Kovac, the Munich side will be looking to continue their impressive start to the season.

Bayern facts & analysis

– Matchday 1 win in Frankfurt 6:1
– Supercup in Leipzig won 5:3
– Musiala with 3 goals in 2 competitive matches

Wolfsburg form & balance check

VfL Wolfsburg have had a very weak year and are desperate to return to more successful times this season. The Wolves spent almost € 35 million on new players in the summer to improve the width of the squad. Only two new players, Patrick Wimmer (Bielefeld) and Mattias Svanberg (Bologna), made it into the starting eleven on matchday 1. The ex-Bielefeld player even scored his first goal after eleven minutes. After a remarkable dribble, he passed on to Lukas Nmecha, who coolly tapped in for the 1:0 lead

Wolves give the game out of their hands

However, the promoted team became stronger. Niklas Füllkrüg equalised with a low shot from distance (21.), two minutes later the 1.71 m tall Leonardo Bittencourt scored for a quick Bremen lead (23.). With the deficit behind them, VfL naturally had more of the game after the change of ends and pushed Werder more and more into their own half. In the 84th minute, the effort was finally rewarded with the not undeserved 2:2 equaliser, Guilavgoui finishing flat into the far corner after a short corner kick. Wolves are now unbeaten in five Bundesliga games (2S, 3U).

Wolfsburg facts & analysis

– 1st matchday 2:2 played against Bremen
– 2 newcomers in the starting eleven
– Undefeated in 5 games (2S, 3U)

Predicted line-up – last update on 12 August 2022

Bayern will start with the same eleven that dominated from the first minute in Frankfurt. There is no reason to change. Still missing are Coman (suspension), Goretzka (knee) and Choupo-Moting (kidney stones).

For the Wolves, Wind will definitely be absent due to muscular problems. In addition, VfL is worried about Franjic’s ability to play. The starting eleven will most likely be a 4-3-3 with Guilavogui, Svanberg and Arnold in the centre. Max Kruse might not be ready for a start yet.
