Bayern Munich – Union Berlin

The 22nd matchday in the Bundesliga is on the schedule and this round holds an absolute cracker. The record champion from Munich receives the Eisernen from Berlin for the absolute top match. First place and third place face each other in a direct duel and it hasn’t been as close as it is at the moment for decades. The last time three teams had the same number of points after the 21st matchday was over 53 years ago. At that time, however, the 2-point rule still applied. With regard to the upcoming match, we expect two teams to be on an equal footing and you can find out who will come out on top in our Bayern – Union tip.

As already mentioned, Bayern are at the top of the table with 43 points. Last weekend, however, the Bavarians were defeated for the first time this year. The Munich team lost 1:3 against their fearful opponents from Gladbach, and their upcoming opponents from Berlin also failed to win. The Eisernen could not get beyond a 0-0 draw against the bottom team from Gelsenkirchen at the Alte Försterei.

Bayern Form & Balance Check

There is unrest once again at the club from Munich. Coach Julian Nagelsmann’s men still lead the standings, but FC Bayern have a points tally of just 50 per cent in the new year (nine points taken out of a possible 18).

After the three draws at the start of the new year, the form of the record champion had actually improved and, not least due to the 1:0 in the royal class in Paris, it looked like a good month. If it hadn’t been for the defeat at the fearful Gladbach. Also due to the early dismissal of Upamecano, the Munich team lost in the end with 1:3.

Bayern like to play against Union

Despite last weekend’s defeat at Borussia-Park, FCB fans are positive they can defend their league lead against Berlin. The Munich team has never lost a game against the Eisern. Another reason why there will at least be no defeat against Berlin is the strong record in front of their own fans.

Together with the Eisernen, the record champions are the only club in the league that has yet to lose a home game. With regard to the duel against Union, the defence must be secure again. The record champions have the best defence in the league with 21 goals conceded.

Bayern facts & analysis

 – Lead the Bundesliga table.
 – Still without a home defeat
 – Last lost 1:3 against Gladbach

Union Form & Balance Check

The Berliners from the Alte Försterei actually manage to improve once again compared to last season. Union has developed into an absolute top team in the league, picking up the most points in 2023 behind Borussia Dortmund. The club from the capital is still unbeaten this year and the team from Köpenick has picked up a full seven points more than their upcoming opponents from Munich. However, the record against the record champions looks anything but good. Union is still waiting for its first win against the FCB.

On the last matchday, there was the duel against Schalke 04 and against the Knappen it was only enough for a 0:0. Despite the unsatisfactory draw, the Köpenickers regained some self-confidence on Thursday in the Europa League. There, they advanced to the round of 16 with a clear 3:1 victory over Ajax.

Like to play against the leaders

Even if the record speaks against a victory for the Berliners, we don’t see Union without a chance in Munich on Sunday. After all, Union loves to play against the Bundesliga leaders. So far, there have been nine duels against a league leader and Union has been able to score in more than half of the games (two wins, three draws and four defeats). On Sunday, it will be their own defence that will have to do the most against Bayern’s strong attack. With 24 goals conceded, the Berliners have the second-best defence in the league.

Union facts & analysis

 – Currently in 3rd place.
 – Second best defence in the league
 – Still without a win against Bayern

Predicted line-up – last update on 25 February 2023

The German record champions will have to do without the suspended Upamecano in the upcoming match. Coach Nagelsmann will rely on a three-man backline of Pavard, De Light and Davies. Müller, who was last substituted early on, will start alongside Choupo-Moting. This also means that Goretzka will move to the bench.

The guests from Köpenick want to succeed in a familiar 3-5-2. Coach Urs Fischer left it open during the week whether Becker will have to take his place on the bench again or whether he will play alongside Behrens in the attack. Otherwise, the Berliners, who are still unbeaten in 2023, will field no big surprises.
