Nobody would have thought that the duel between FC Bayern and SC Freiburg on the 10th matchday of the Bundesliga would be called a top match before the season. But even with the double burden, the Breisgauer were able to build on their successful last season in the first games and even improve on it. With 18 points from nine games, SC are now second in the table going into the away game at FC Bayern, who are the immediate chasers in third place.
The hosts, on the other hand, are not exactly riding a wave of euphoria. FC Bayern has not even won half of its Bundesliga games and, with 16 points after nine games, has made its worst start in eleven years. Bayern are facing a landmark encounter. Last weekend in Dortmund, Bayern missed out on further closing the gap to the top of the table due to a last-minute equaliser. On the contrary, Union Berlin even managed to extend their lead by two points with a narrow away win in Stuttgart, and if Bayern now slip up against Freiburg as well, the mood at the record champions could start to get really uncomfortable.

But Bayern must finally deliver again in the league after their weakest start in eleven years, which will be anything but easy against extremely confident Freiburg.
Tense personnel situation
Preparations for the top match could well have gone better. Numerous players are currently injured and, even if they can play at the end, they will not be top fit for the important next Bundesliga match. In the end, however, it doesn’t matter who is on the pitch on Sunday – after only one win from the last six league games, a win is imperative on Sunday.

Freiburg form & balance check
SC Freiburg travel to the Allianz Arena on Sunday with a maximum broad chest. The Breisgauer have not lost for seven Bundesliga games (4 wins, 3 draws), which currently makes them the longest unbeaten team in the Bundesliga. In the last few weeks, however, the results have diminished somewhat. The two goalless draws against Gladbach and Hoffenheim were followed by a 2-1 home win against Mainz 05, before the Breisgauer just managed to avoid their second defeat of the season last weekend at Hertha BSC (2-2).

It was obvious to the Freiburg players that the exhausting last few weeks had left their mark on the team. A goalkeeper error by Oliver Christensen allowed Kevin Schade to score the somewhat fortunate equaliser with just under ten minutes remaining. In the Europa League, the Breisgau team remains unblemished. After the 2:0 first leg victory against Nantes, SC won the return match on French soil last Thursday with 4:0. The dress rehearsal for the top match in Munich could hardly have gone better.
For only the third time after 1994/95 and 2010/11, SC Freiburg (2nd) will now go into a duel with FC Bayern (3rd) as the better-placed team. Perhaps, under these conditions, the first ever away win in Munich will finally happen. So far, the Black Forest side have lost 19 times and drawn three times at FC Bayern.

For Bayern, Coman (suspension), Sarr and Hernandez are certain to be out. Behind Neuer, Gnabry, Müller, de Ligt and Davies there is still a question mark. However, it looks like each of them will be fit by Sunday.
