FC Barcelona vs. Getafe CF

Getafe’s season opener in La Liga has been quite something. After the games at FC Valencia and against FC Sevilla, the team plays at FC Barcelona on the third matchday. Around 30,000 fans are expected at the Camp Nou on Sunday, when Barca will try to close the gap to the top of the table from 17:00. Find out what our predictions are for this La Liga match in our Barcelona vs Getafe tip.

After a convincing opening win against Real Sociedad San Sebastian (4:2), the Catalans dropped their first points in their second game at Athletic Bilbao (1:1). After the course of the game, however, one almost has to speak of a lucky point for Barca. In the home match against Getafe, they will now try to get three points again with a convincing performance.

Getafe are in 18th place in the table with zero points after two unfortunate 1-0 defeats at the start of the season. And they are unlikely to pick up any points against the great FC Barcelona either. Getafe have not won any of their 16 away games at Barcelona. In 2018, they last picked up a point in a 0-0 draw.

Barcelona form & balance check

Barca already worked their magic in familiar fashion in their first game of the post-Messi era. Their opponents, Real Sociedad San Sebastian, were largely left without a chance. However, as Barca went down more than one gear towards the end of the game, RSO made it 2:3 with goals in the 82nd and 85th minute. In the 91st minute, Barca then provided the final decision via a counterattack. Surprisingly, it was the Dane Martin Braithwaite who followed in Messi’s footsteps and was voted “Man of the Match” with two goals and an assist.

In the second match, the fans at the San Mamés in Bilbao saw a wild opening phase. Both sides missed several great chances to take the lead. The score went into the break at 0-0. The stronger team so far: Athletic Bilbao. Consequently, the Basques took the lead in the 50th minute through their ninth corner. As the game progressed, however, they failed to extend their lead and Memphis Depay equalised in the 75th minute. In the end, the Catalans, who lacked combination football and flow for long stretches, came away with a fortunate point.

Injury worries in all parts of the team

The depth of FC Barcelona’s squad is remarkable. Nevertheless, the current injury worries weigh heavily. Starting in goal with Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who is missing in the build-up play. Substitute goalkeeper Neto does not even begin to have the footballing qualities of the German. With Gerard Pique, the constant in central defence is now also missing. He is out indefinitely with a calf injury.

Midfield jewel Pedri, who played 52 competitive games for Barca last season, is getting a well-deserved holiday after a summer in which he took part in the European Championship and the Olympic Games with the Spanish national team. On the offensive side, Ronald Koeman will have to do without Ansu Fati, Ousmane Dembele and Sergio Agüero. While Ansu Fati is expected back in September, Dembele and Agüero are not expected back until mid-October.

Barcelona facts & analysis
 – Possession football: an average of 65 per cent possession with a passing accuracy of 88 per cent.
 – Offensively strong: five goals scored in two games.
 – Defensively weak: conceded three goals in two games

Getafe Form & Balance Check

Getafe had an extremely unfortunate start to the new season. On the first matchday, the Azulones lost 0:1 in Valencia. Hugo Guillamon was shown the red card in the third minute and Valencia had to play with ten players. Nevertheless, the Blanquinegros took the lead through a penalty kick by Carlos Soler in the 11th minute of the match. From then on it was a game on one goal. Getafe, however, failed several times due to their own inability to finish and so, despite 22 to four shots on goal and 74 percent possession, it remained 1-0 for Valencia.

On the second matchday, Getafe hosted last year’s fourth-placed Sevilla. In a match that was evenly contested for long stretches without any great scoring chances, wild card Erik Lamela scored the 1-0 winner for the Andalusians in the 3rd minute of injury time. Getafe once again went away empty-handed.

The focus must be on Matchday 4 and 5

Getafe did well in their first two games, against Valencia and Sevilla. Nevertheless, the Azulones stand with zero points and zero goals. In the away match in Barcelona, the team should not expect much either. On the sixth matchday, the champions Atletico Madrid are waiting for the next big game. The full focus must therefore be on the two games in between.

On matchday four, they host FC Elche, who are currently one point ahead of Getafe. On matchday five, the Azulones host Rayo Vallecano. The Madrid club is currently in last place in La Liga with zero points and a goal difference of 0:4.

Getafe facts & analysis
 – Inaccurate: failed to score in both La Liga games.
 – Inaccurate finishing: only four of 34 shots on target.
 – Winless: lost both games 1-0

Predicted line-up – last update on 29 August 2021

On the FC Barcelona side, there will be several forced changes compared to the starting eleven from the last match. Centre-back Eric Garcia is missing after his red card suspension. Pique also had to leave the pitch early due to a calf injury. So a new central defence will be needed against Getafe. The hottest contenders for the two places are the Uruguayan Ronald Araujo and Clement Lenglet. In addition, young star Pedri will get his well-deserved holiday after the European Championship and the Olympic Games.

We expect Getafe, after a convincing performance for long stretches on the last matchday, with the same line-up as against Sevilla FC.
