FC Augsburg vs. Bayern Munich

The international break is over and the Bundesliga is back on the agenda this weekend. To kick off the 12th matchday, we can look forward to the duel between FC Augsburg and FC Bayern München at the WWK Arena. Kick-off is on Friday evening at 8:30 pm.

For Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann, it will be a reunion with his former club. At FCA, he was not only active as a player, but also as a scout. He has never lost against his former employer. As a professional coach, he even celebrated as many victories against no other club as against Augsburg (ten, nine of them in the Bundesliga). Whether we think victory number eleven will be added on Friday and what else we think about this game is now revealed in our Augsburg vs Bayern tip.

Augsburg – Bayern Tip

The starting situation is clear. FC Bayern, as always, are the heavy favourites and can only beat themselves. Augsburg have only won two games so far and will probably have to fight to stay in the league until the end of the season. Statistically, the two opponents are even better or worse than they have been for a long time. 28 points after eleven matchdays are Bayern’s best tally in six years, while nine points after eleven matchdays is Augsburg’s weakest record in six years. In the run-up to the match, it is quite clear that these trends will continue.

Augsburg Form & Balance Check

For FC Augsburg, things have been extremely sluggish going forward this season. As mentioned at the beginning, the Fuggerstädter have made the worst start to the season in six years with only nine points after eleven games. Recently, however, the results have improved, at least in their own stadium. The two clear home defeats against Hoffenheim (0:4) and Leverkusen (1:4) on Matchday 1 and Matchday 3 were followed by the 1:0 home win against Mönchengladbach, the 1:1 against Bielefeld and the 4:1 victory over VfB Stuttgart. Away from home, however, the last four games were all lost. First in Freiburg (3:0) and Dortmund (2:1), then in Mainz (4:1) and Wolfsburg (1:0).

FCA with 4th home game without defeat?

After three home games without defeat, FCA will now look to remain unbeaten in their own stadium for the fourth time in a row on Friday. However, hopes of keeping something countable at home against the incredibly strong record champions are likely to be limited. So far, Augsburg have only won twice against Bayern and both times the Munich side had already been crowned German champions – at home on matchday 29 in 2013/14 and at the Allianz Arena on matchday 32 in 2014/15, both with 1-0 victories. At most, a look at the last encounters at the WWK Arena should be encouraging. In January 2021, Augsburg lost narrowly with 0:1. Before that, there was a 2:2 draw and a narrow 2:3 defeat.

Augsburg facts & analysis
11 points from 9 games
 – Last lost 1:0 in Wolfsburg
 – Worst start to a season in 6 years
 – Unbeaten for 3 home games

Bayern Form & Balance Check

For Bayern, the last few games after the 0:5 defeat in the cup at Borussia Mönchengladbach have been very successful again. At the extremely strong capital club Union Berlin, the record champion won away with 2:5, before the Champions League match against Benfica Lisbon was won with the same result. On the last matchday before the international break, the Munich team won the top match against SC Freiburg, who were still unbeaten, 2-1. What looked close, however, was a clear affair from the middle of the first half.

Nagelsmann eleven with the next record

29:13 shots and 64% possession then clearly show how much the record champions dominated this top match. The only thing they failed to do was to make things clear earlier on, so that things got very tense again after Jannik Haberer scored the final goal in injury time. With the 2-1 victory, Bayern also broke another record. After eleven matchdays, Gnabry & Co. now have 40 goals – a new record in the Bundesliga. Even after twelve games, no team had ever scored so many goals. The defeat of BVB in Leipzig also enabled Bayern to extend their lead at the top of the table to four points.

Bayern Facts & Analysis
28 points from 12 games
 – Last win 2:1 against Freiburg
 – 40 goals after 11 games – record!
 – Only against Cottbus a higher win rate (83%) than against Augsburg (80%)

Predicted line-up – last update on 17 November 2021

Fc Augsburg are still worried about their stricken centre-backs Jeffrey Gouweleeuw and Reece Oxford. If they are not fit, Frederik Winther and Iago will be available. The playing system could be a 3-5-2. However, it is also conceivable that Andre Hahn, Alfred Finbogason and/or Florian Niederlechner are on the pitch and the formation is changed.

FC Bayern is likely to start with the top eleven. Niklas Süle is still in domestic isolation. On the wings, we expect Serge Gnabry and Leroy Sané. Leon Goretzka should be fit for the upcoming Bundesliga match. However, a starting eleven appearance from Corentin Tolisso is not ruled out either.

Augsburg – Bayern direct comparison & statistics

The direct comparison unsurprisingly goes to FC Bayern, who have won 28 of the 37 duels. Augsburg won six times, three duels ended in a draw. The record of the last five games is clearly in favour of the record champions, with four wins and one draw. Bayern won the most recent encounter 5:2 in May 2021.

Last season, Bayern Munich won both matches against FC Augsburg (5-2 at home and 1-0 away).
 – A year ago, FC Augsburg were in 10th position in the table with 13 points. Currently they are in position 16 (9).
 – Bayern Munich’s away record this season: 4 wins – 1 draws – 0 losses.
 – When FC Augsburg leads 1-0 in home matches, they win 60% of the matches.
 – The most common result between FC Augsburg and Bayern Munich is 0-2 when FC Augsburg has had home advantage. 3 matches ended like this.
