AS Roma vs. Lazio Roma

There are plenty of top games in Europe’s top competitions again this weekend. While we only saw the end of the Champions League group stage on Wednesday, Serie A will see a capital derby on Sunday. It is the Derby della Capitale, when AS Roma meet Lazio Roma. What makes this rivalry special is that the two local rivals share the same home ground. Rome’s Olympic Stadium is not only the home of the Giallorossi, but also of the Laziali.

Looking at the starting position of this duel, coach José Mourinho’s team goes into the match with one point more in the table than Lazio. The Associazione Sportiva recently won 3-1 at Hellas Verona and advanced to the knockout round of the Europa League on Thursday. Lazio, on the other hand, lost 1-0 at Feyenoord Rotterdam and were eliminated from the Europa League. In addition, the Biancocelesti lost 1:3 against US Salernitana on the last matchday of the Serie A. Whether the Laziali have the right answer to these defeats in the capital derby, you can read in our AS Rome – Lazio betting tip.

AS Roma Form & Balance Check

AS Roma go into the Derby della Capitale as legitimate favourites. The favourite status results from four wins from the last five games. After the 0:1 home defeat on matchday 7 against Atalanta Bergamo, the Giallorossi responded to this defeat with a 2:1 away win at runners-up Inter Milan. José Mourinho’s team followed up this success with two more trebles against Empoli and Sampdoria before league leaders Napoli defeated Associazione Sportiva 2-1.

It was the third defeat of the season for the Romans, as Rome had already been shaved 4-0 by Udinese on matchday 5. But the capital also had a perfect answer to the defeat against SSC last week. Roma won 3:1 after trailing 0:1 at Hellas Verona.

Often close wins

This season, AS Roma are brimming with effectiveness. For all the teams coached by José Mourinho, the saying has always applied: a good horse does not jump higher than it has to. It is the same with the Associazione Sportiva. The Giallorossi have already won eight times in Serie A and only in the two victories over AC Monza (3-0 win) and Hellas Verona (3-1 win) did the Romans win by more than a goal margin than their opponents.

Rome have already won three times by 1:0, and their efficiency is also reflected in their goal tally. With only 16 goals, Roma scored 25 points, whereas the reigning champions Milan scored 25 goals, only one more. In addition, Inter Milan and arch-rivals Lazio took one point less than Mourinho’s men with more goals scored.

AS Roma facts & analysis

 – AS Roma are 4th in the table with 25 points.
 – Most recently, the Giallorossi won 3-1 at Verona.
 – Romans picked up four wins from their last five matches.

Lazio form & balance check

The Laziali’s lack of Ciro Immobile was not only evident on paper, at the latest last weekend. With a 2-0 away win at Atalanta Bergamo in their luggage, the Biancocelesti went into what was supposed to be an easy home match against US Salernitana. Coach Maurizio Sarri’s team had been unbeaten for six games in a row, picking up a full five wins from those games, before the Salerno side came and beat the Romans 3-1 at their own stadium.

This defeat cannot be explained as Immobile was already absent from the success at Atalanta. Despite this defeat, Lazio Roma are playing a strong season. The Biancocelesti are only three points behind 2nd place. However, Thursday night’s elimination as group third in the Euro League is a bitter blow ahead of a derby.

First time conceding three goals

Not only was the defeat in general against Salerno shocking, but the amount. Previously, the Biancocelesti had the best defence in Serie A, conceding only five goals in eleven games. The Laziali have played to nil a full seven times. Lazio never conceded three goals in a game this season. Only league leaders Napoli managed to score twice against the Romans. As a result of the recent defeat, Juventus Turin now have the best defence in the division with seven goals conceded. Lazio follow in joint second place with Bergamo with eight goals conceded.

Lazio facts & analysis

 – Lazio are in 5th place in the table with 24 points.
 – Most recently the Laziali lost 1:3 against Salernitana.
 – With 8 goals conceded, the Biancocelesti have the second best defence.

Predicted line-up – last update on 4 November 2022

With Paulo Dybala, AS Roma still have to do without the best striker in their ranks. The Argentine is suffering from a moderately severe thigh injury and will not be fit until the start of the World Cup. Most recently, Dybala was replaced by Zaniolo. The Italian moved from midfield into the forward line and together with Abraham formed the forward duo in coach Mourinho’s 3-5-2 system. Zaniolo scored most recently in a 3-1 win at Verona. Wijnaldum, Spinazzola and Draboe are also out injured.

It is unlikely that coach Maurizio Sarri will once again use the 4-4-2 formation in which the Laziali lost 3-1 at home to the team from Salerno. It is more likely that Lazio will play in the 4-3-3 system in which the Romans won 2-0 at Atalanta. In addition, Anderson is currently the best solution in attack to the question of who will injure Immobile. The Italian suffered a leg flexor muscle injury. But it is not only the striker who cannot play in the derby. Milinkovic-Savic, the visitors’ best midfielder, is missing through suspension. The Serbian is likely to be replaced by Luis Alberto.

AS Roma – Lazio direct comparison & stats

The recent history of the Derby della Capitale is very even. AS Roma and Lazio each won two home matches in a row against each other. Before that, the derby ended in a 1-1 draw twice in a row. The last time the Giallorossi managed to win two derbies in a row was in the 2016 season.

 – The Giallorossi did not lose 5 home matches in a row against the Laziali.
 – Lazio last won at AS Roma 5 years ago.
 – Only one of the last 11 home games against the Laziali was lost by AS Roma.
 – The last meeting was won by AS Roma with 3:0.
