For a long time, tennis fans have been waiting for this, now they will be served the longed-for showdown in Turin. The ATP Finals are just around the corner! In the coming days, the eight best players in the world will duel in two groups.
From a German perspective, the focus is naturally on Olympic champion Alexander Zverev. He will open the finals against local hero Matteo Berrettini. The last duels went to Zverev, so his odds are correspondingly low. Is Zverev rightly so clearly favoured?

He will take on Alexander Zverev, while the match between Daniil Medvedev and Hubert Hurkacz is waiting for us afterwards. Zverev against Berrettini – that sounds like a duel in which both players will benefit from their service game!
The bookmakers have found their clear favourite in the German, even at Bet365 the odds remain below 1.50. Berrettini, on the other hand, oscillates between a 2.50 and 3.00. Whether the Hamburg native still has enough in the tank?
The season was long, with the Olympic victory and several other trophies, the 24-year-old had a fantastic year. “I’m done, I’m tired. I think all the top players are a bit tired. I want to do well and win matches, that’s for sure,” Zverev piles deep as a precautionary measure.
He knows how it feels to win the ATP Finals. Last year, he was eliminated in the preliminary round, but in 2018, he clinched the title with a victory over Novak Djokovic. The fact that fatigue is slowly taking hold became clear a few days ago in Paris.
Zverev lost his semi-final against Medvedev by a wide margin and then gave up the Stockholm Open. After five tournament victories and a gold medal, Zverev no longer has anything to prove to anyone.
He has already dueled with Berrettini four times, winning three times. This year they met at the Masters in Madrid. 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 – in a close match, the German got the better of him in the end.
It was the only duel that went over three sets. Both players had very similar scores on the first serve in Madrid. No wonder, both are almost two metres tall and have incredible power in their game.
Zverev, however, is considered a much better return player, but will he be able to prove that on Sunday? For Matteo Berrettini, the finals in his home country are of course something very special.
After 2019, when he failed to reach the preliminary round with one win and two losses, he will be in the select circle for the second time. The 25-year-old has not covered himself in glory recently.
In Vienna, he came close against Alexei Popyrin and Nikolos Bassilashvili, but then Carlos Alcaraz was unbeatable. Four tiebreaks in three matches, once again showing that his own service game is his great strength.
In Indian Wells and Cincinnati it was already over after two games each. It was already noticeable at the US Open that the Italian has problems bringing matches home clearly. He only won one match in three sets, but that was in two tiebreaks – he just doesn’t like returning.
There’s no question that this year’s finals will be nothing but a real showstopper.
