Tennis Tips Today – Today’s Matches on July 30
I’m currently paying close attention to the two singles tournaments—the ATP and WTA events—in Washington. My tennis tips for today include two men’s matches and four women’s round-of-16 matchups.

Tennis Picks Today – July 30, 2026: Washington Preview
After the grass-court tournament at Wimbledon wraps up, the focus of tennis fans usually shifts overseas, where—following the various tournaments in Washington, Los Cabos, and Memphis—the legendary US Open is soon on the schedule.
In fact, several superstars are set to compete who, while favored by bookmakers with cashout options, have already disappointed on numerous occasions in recent months. Ben Shelton is just such a top player who, despite the home-court advantage, could once again be eliminated early!
Wimbledon Picks Today, July 30: Humbert – Shelton (5:00 p.m.)
When Ben Shelton smashes the felt ball over the net with nearly 240 klamotten, the court on the other side is regularly set ablaze.
This season, however, the American has been a total wild card: Alongside three titles, he’s also suffered embarrassing early-round losses at Paris and Wimbledon this year.
On top of that, during his nail-biting victory in the opening match against Martin Damm Jr., he once again struggled mightily on the return and saw painfully little of the court.
Ugo Humbert, on the other hand, is a completely different kind of player—the Frenchman is currently handling his service games stoically and without any major hiccups. In his straight-set 2-0 victory over Andres Martin, he closed out nine out of ten service games like clockwork.
The Frenchman’s flat, venomous forehand shots are a perfect match for the fast hard court anyway, as they don’t give Shelton’s long wind-up swings time to unleash their destructive power.
Shelton may have come out on top in a tiebreak thriller at the Australian Open earlier this year, but on these courts, Humbert won’t give an inch.
This will be a grueling ace battle where break points are few and far between, and minor lapses in concentration will decide the sets.
My prediction: Shelton will once again lose his nerve!
Washington Picks for Today, July 30: Nakashima – Mensik (4:00 p.m.)
Nakashima is by no means going into this round of 16 unprepared. After dispatching Tomás Martin Etcheverry in straight sets with stoic precision in his opening match, the Californian’s first-serve percentage is particularly strong.
By the way: In 2024, the two faced off twice within a few days—in both Canberra and the Australian Open qualifiers, Mensík came out on top and literally ran Nakashima ragged in the tiebreaks.
Two years later, however, the American has made massive tactical strides and is now defusing such offensive surges much more intelligently.
Who takes control here will be decided purely at the service line. If Mensík fails to disrupt Nakashima’s baseline rhythm early on, the American will drag the Czech into long, grueling rallies.
I expect a grueling battle dominated by service games, in which small details will make all the difference….
My prediction: There could be several tiebreaks!
WTA Washington Picks Today, July 30: Kudermetova – Svitolina (5:00 p.m.)
Svitolina is currently playing with her usual mental toughness from a defensive stance, digging back almost every point that seemed certain to be lost and suddenly throwing in venomous counter-shots that immediately take the wind out of aggressive players’ sails.
Kudermetova will have to take full risks right from her first serve to even rattle Svitolina. However, anyone who rushes into an all-out attack against the Ukrainian is bound to rack up a glaring error rate from the baseline.
Unless Kudermetova has an absolutely stellar day with a very low error rate, Svitolina will skillfully vary the pace of the match and prolong the rallies until her opponent’s forehand falters.
To me, Svitolina is clearly the more reliable bet in this match. She’ll take control of the match in a composed manner and consistently dictate the rallies, so that Kudermetova will quickly run out of steam.
My pick: A clear difference in class is evident!
WTA Washington Picks Today, July 30: Pegula – Frech (4:00 p.m.)
Magdalena Frech faces a seemingly insurmountable Herculean task. While the Polish player struggled through her opening match against Ann Li, her head-to-head record against Pegula looks bleak!
After all, this is their third meeting, and Frech has lost all three without a chance—most recently on clay in Stuttgart, 1-6, 1-6.
Pegula’s relentless pace from the baseline simply robs the Polish player of the time to change her rhythm. When Pegula dictates the rallies with her backhand crosscourt shots, Frech’s error-prone footwork quickly falls apart.
I expect a dominant performance from the local favorite right from the start. Pegula won’t let anything slip in front of her home crowd and will secure her spot in the quarterfinals in straight sets without any trouble.
My pick: Pegula is clearly the better player, just like in Stuttgart!
WTA Washington Picks Today, July 30: Shnaider – Potapova (11:00 p.m.)
After her emotional opening-round victory over former champion Venus Williams, Anastasia Potapova brings plenty of confidence to the hard courts in Washington, but she loses her rhythm alarmingly quickly when facing pressure from her opponent.
Diana Shnaider, on the other hand, has firmly established herself in the top 20 and plays like a relentless steamroller on fast hard courts. The match in Brisbane earlier this year showed just how much trouble Potapova is in when the left-hander takes control!
There, Shnaider thoroughly dismantled her compatriot—who has since become an Austrian citizen—6-1, 6-3 in just over an hour, showcasing every trick in the book.
As long as Shnaider keeps her first-serve percentage in the green zone, this match will be a one-sided affair. While Potapova will land some great long-line shots at times, she simply lacks the defensive resilience to withstand Shnaider’s power.
My pick: Shnaider has too much power!
WTA Washington Picks Today, July 30: Tjen – Kalinskaya (11:00 p.m.)
Get ready for a damn exciting round of 16 match: Indonesian rising star Janice Tjen faces Anna Kalinskaya, who enters the match as the clear No. 20 in the world.
While Tjen has made a name for herself as an uncompromising attacker in U.S. college tennis and on the ITF Tour, the Russian brings the composed poise of the world’s absolute elite to the hard court.
Kalinskaya cruised past Daria Kasatkina in straight sets in her opening match in the U.S. capital, winning an impressive 66% of points on her first serve. She controls the pace at the baseline with extremely flat, well-placed groundstrokes.
The difference in Tour experience is enormous: While Tjen is naturally struggling with nerves in her debut on this ATP/WTA 500 stage, Kalinskaya is accustomed to constant high-speed rallies.
Although the Indo-American will be eager to surprise the favorite with quick angle shots, she tends to miss the court by a wide margin when the pace picks up. I therefore expect a very convincing performance from the favorite.
My pick: Kalinskaya, with more experience, advances to the quarterfinals!
