Wimbledon, 1st round, Monday, 6/30/2025, 5:00 p.m.

Alexander Zverev is keeping German hopes alive for Wimbledon 2025 – but no top results are expected behind him. For the German players in London, the main thing is to get through the first round.

Daniel Altmaier, who reached the round of 16 in Paris a few weeks ago, has been drawn against an opponent who is not far ahead of him in the world rankings – and yet the odds are clear.

In my Altmaier Diallo tip, I’ll now reveal why I would bet on a relatively close match here and don’t expect a clear victory for either side. So my betting recommendation for you is: Three sets won’t be enough!

A round of 16 at a Grand Slam tournament? Anything but a foregone conclusion for Daniel Altmaier! The 26-year-old showed his strength at the French Open, knocking out Taylor Fritz, Vit Kopriva, and Hamad Mededovic.

After three wins in four sets, his run came to an end in the fourth round, losing 3-6, 4-6, 6-7 to Frances Tiafoe. Out with applause, Altmaier started his grass court season after successful days in Paris.

In Halle, he lost right at the start to Daniil Medvedev, and in Mallorca, after overcoming Fabio Fognini, he was knocked out by Corentin Moutet 6-7, 6-7 in the most unfortunate manner imaginable.

The German has been ranked 59th in the world for several days now, thanks of course to his great performances at Roland Garros. Wimbledon and Daniel Altmaier haven’t quite clicked in recent years.

It was only last year that he claimed his first victory in the main draw of the prestigious tournament, beating Arthur Fery in five tough sets. This was followed by a defeat to Denis Shapovalov – also in five sets.

So the 26-year-old has been warned and knows that he hasn’t achieved much in London yet. He first met Gabriel Diallo outside of qualifying in 2024, winning 7-6, 6-4 in the Davis Cup.

Will he take a quick look at the bookmakers himself? If so, he will realize that he is the underdog. The average odds are 4.00 to 1.22.

But what is the reason for this big difference in odds? Gabriel Diallo enters the duel ranked 41st in the world, not that far ahead of the German. The 2.03-meter giant wants to use his serve as his biggest weapon.

He didn’t manage to do that at the French Open, where he was knocked out in the second round by Tallon Griekspoor. But as soon as he stepped onto the grass in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Diallo showed a completely different side.

With victories over Aleksandar Vukic, Jordan Thompson, Karen Khachanov, Ugo Humbert, and Zizou Bergs, the Canadian won the tournament, winning four tiebreaks. He clearly left some energy in the Netherlands, as his subsequent matches were significantly weaker.

The recent quarter-final in Mallorca was not quite what the 23-year-old had hoped for in his Wimbledon dress rehearsal. So far, 2025 has been a successful year for Diallo – I can’t interpret his statistics any other way.

He has won 19 of his 32 matches in singles competition, which is certainly one of the reasons why the odds at our tax-free betting providers are so clear. It’s hard to believe that Diallo only played his first main draw matches at a Grand Slam tournament at the 2024 French Open.

This means that success at Wimbledon is not yet in sight. In 2024, he failed to qualify for the main draw on the hallowed turf, so Monday will be a first for him either way.

My Altmaier Diallo tip

From a German perspective, I’m naturally keeping my fingers crossed for Daniel Altmaier on Monday evening. The 26-year-old has only managed one win at Wimbledon, while his opponent has yet to taste success.

Gabriel Diallo has had a very strong year so far in 2025 and travels to London with the title from ‘s-Hertogenbosch under his belt. Altmaier, on the other hand, knows that he played well at the French Open. In my opinion, this is a match between two players who both deserve to reach the second round. That’s why I’ve decided on the following tip:

Three sets won’t be enough here!
