Venezia – AC Milan

When a team has just stormed into the Coppa final with a 3-0 win over Inter in the derby, while their opponents are only one point above the relegation zone, there is automatically electricity in the air at the Stadio Pier Luigi Penzo: Venezia (25 points, 18th in the table) welcomes an inconsistent but euphoric AC Milan (9th) on Sunday. The Venetians will have to improvise without regular goalkeeper Filip Stanković and center back Michael Svoboda, while Milan travels with renewed confidence after Luka Jović & Co. suddenly showed their old firepower in the cup.

Despite the cup frenzy, the league remains a work in progress for the Rossoneri: only one win in four games, but a first step towards European football beckons if they pick up three points on Sunday. Venezia, on the other hand, desperately need points, as Lecce are only one point ahead of them. Accordingly, cup dreams meet existential worries here.

Venezia FC form & record check

Venezia has won once, drawn three times and lost once in its last five matches. Strikingly, every first half ended in a draw, mostly goalless. The offense lacks creativity, while the absence of Stanković and Svoboda has cost the team stability on defense. At least the 2-2 draw against Empoli showed some morale, but a single win in eight league games remains a sobering record.

However, with only one point behind Lecce, survival is still within reach – provided the team improves its finishing.

Venice are likely to field a 3-5-2 formation once again: Radu – Marcandalli, Idzes, Candé – Candela, Busio, Pérez, Nicolussi, Zampano – Gytkjær, Črnigoj. Despite personnel shortages, the team has recently gelled well.

Milan are planning to field Maignan – Tomori, Gabbia, Pavlović, Hernández – Fofana, Reijnders – Pulišić, Jiménez, Leão – Jović. After scoring four goals in five appearances, Jović is a sure starter; Chukwueze and Musah remain wild cards for now. Last-minute rotations are never out of the question with Conceição, but big surprises are unlikely.

AC Milan form & record check

Milan’s season has been like a pendulum: the 3-0 derby triumph lifted the mood, but that came after a 1-0 defeat to Atalanta in the league. Milan have scored at least twice in four of their last five competitive games, mostly after the break. The attacking trio of Pulišić, Leão and Jović are increasingly in sync, while defensive concentration has been lacking in tight league games.

Coach Sérgio Conceição has recently been experimenting with a back three, but is likely to stick with his league formation. Five points separate them from eighth place – a win in Venice is a must if they are to keep their European hopes alive.

The head-to-head record is clear: 4-0, 3-0, 2-0 – three Milan wins without conceding a goal since 2021. Each time, there were at least two goals between the two teams. Venezia’s attack has never found a way past the Rossoneri defense.

If the statistics remain the same, the numbers, form and personnel advantages speak in Milan’s favor. Venezia will have to fight to rewrite history – but in the relegation battle, the ball has often taken strange turns.

H2H Venezia FC – AC Milan Head-to-Head Comparison & Statistics

In the last three meetings between Venezia and AC Milan, all in Serie A, AC Milan clearly dominated. The results speak for themselves: in September 2024, Milan won 4-0, in early 2022 they won 3-0 away, and in 2021 Milan won 2-0 at home. Venezia failed to score a single goal in these games.

It is noteworthy that AC Milan not only emerged victorious in all three encounters, but also kept a clean sheet in each game. Venezia therefore failed to score in either the first or second half – a recurring theme in the statistics. Milan’s defense in particular allowed the Venetians virtually no chances to score.

AC Milan are currently on a run of three wins in a row, each with a margin of at least two goals. In addition, they have scored more than 1.5 goals per game each time. This is a pattern that catches the eye. One might think that Venezia will have to come up with something new for this task in order to surprise Milan.
