Getafe – Real Madrid

LaLiga has barely entered the final stretch and Real Madrid is already under pressure at the Coliseum: With 69 points, Carlo Ancelotti’s team is four points behind leaders Barcelona – so a slip-up is out of the question. Hosts Getafe are in 12th place with 39 points, but are only two points behind Osasuna and just one point ahead of Espanyol. Curiously, from the home side’s point of view, they have not scored a single goal in their last five direct encounters, while Madrid have won each time (most recently 2-0 on December 1, 2024). Sánchez Martínez, who has international experience, will take charge of the game, and Mbappé and Mendy are doubtful for the Blancos. The roles seem clear, but an unpleasant evening for the favorites is by no means out of the question.

Getafe form & record check

Getafe continues to fluctuate between spirited and erratic: three defeats and two wins in their last five games, most recently a lackluster 0-1 loss at Espanyol. Draws? None – neither at halftime nor after 90 minutes. There have been four goals scored on both sides, with the 1.5-goal mark usually exceeded. The team has lacked determination, especially at home, as the 1-3 defeat to Las Palmas showed. Uche is missing through injury in midfield, which is costing Bordalás’ team stability; as a result, their cushion above the relegation zone is smaller than their position in the table suggests.

Bordalás is unlikely to change his 4-1-4-1 formation: Letáček; Dakonam, Duarte, Alderete, Iglesias; Milla; Terrats, Arambarri, Sola, Coba; Yıldırım. Getafe will therefore focus on compactness and physicality. Real Madrid will probably stick with their usual 4-3-1-2 formation: Courtois; García, Alaba, Asencio, Vázquez; Tchouaméni, Valverde, Bellingham; Modrić; Rodrygo, Vinícius. The defense will have to do without Carvajal, Militão, and Mendy, which underscores the loss of around €70 million. Substitutions such as Camavinga are conceivable during the game, but Ancelotti is unlikely to risk completely upsetting the balance ahead of El Clásico.

Real Madrid form & record check

Real Madrid recently secured narrow 1-0 wins against Alavés and Athletic in La Liga, but lost some of their shine internationally against Arsenal (0-3, 1-2). In their last five competitive games, they have either won or lost, never drawing. Little happens before the break – no game has seen more than one goal before half-time. The star-studded offense has been inconsistent, especially with Mbappé recently suspended and booed in the league. 32 goals conceded is a lot for a team of Real’s stature, and the Spanish press has criticized the lack of flow since Ancelotti’s change in system. Nevertheless, this team can strike out of nowhere, as Valverde’s goal in stoppage time against Athletic proved.

Real Madrid have won their last five games against Getafe, each time without conceding a goal and never scoring more than two goals themselves. Two 2-0 wins (December 2024, February 2024) and three other narrow victories paint the picture. The score was often 0-0 or 1-0 at half-time, so early fireworks are historically rare. Psychologically, Getafe therefore has a tough task ahead of them; any pinprick could end their long wait for a goal against the Royals.

H2H Getafe – Real Madrid Head-to-head comparison & statistics

In the last five meetings between these teams since 2022, there has been a clear trend: Real Madrid has won all of the games, most recently in December 2024 by 2-0 and in their last away game in Getafe in February 2024 (also 2-0). Only in September 2023 did Getafe fall behind at one point, but they were never able to turn the tide.

It is striking that Getafe failed to score a single goal in all five games – their last goal against Real Madrid was a long time ago. Real Madrid kept a clean sheet, but never scored more than two goals per game themselves. There were no games with more than three goals; four times the score was 0-0 or 1-0 at half-time, which suggests a game with few chances overall.

Tactically interesting: Carlo Ancelotti has recently focused on defensive stability and quick transitions, while José Bordalás’ team has struggled to get going, usually giving up after just a few attempts on goal, creating negative momentum for Getafe. One might think there is some psychology behind this, as even minor changes have failed to break the streak.
