Newcastle United v Crystal Palace

Spurred on by their recent 4-1 win over Manchester United, Newcastle United will host Crystal Palace at St. James’ Park on Wednesday evening. The Magpies are in fourth place in the table after 28 matchdays and, with 56 points, are just one point behind Nottingham Forest and one point ahead of Manchester City. On the other hand, Crystal Palace will travel to the Etihad Stadium full of confidence despite their recent 5-2 defeat to Manchester City: Oliver Glasner’s team are in 12th place in the table with 43 points and thus remain comfortably clear of the relegation places.

The last meeting between the two sides ended in a 1-1 draw in November 2024, after Crystal Palace even managed a 2-0 home win the year before. The appearance of Daniel Muñoz, who is likely to be highly motivated after his contract extension at Palace, will be particularly interesting. For the Magpies, on the other hand, the focus is on Harvey Barnes, who is in great form and scored twice against Manchester United. In addition, Sandro Tonali remains in the squad despite ongoing investigations into illegal gambling in Italy. Crystal Palace, on the other hand, may have to do without Romain Esse and Matt Turner, who are at risk of missing out due to illness.

Newcastle Form & Bilanz Check

Newcastle United are in great shape under Eddie Howe. In addition to the clear win over Manchester United, the Magpies also impressed in away games recently – for example with the 3-0 win at Leicester and a narrow but deserved 2-1 win against Brentford.

Alexander Isak is in top form and has already impressed as a goalscorer and provider on numerous occasions. He is supported by Harvey Barnes, who scored twice against Manchester United. With a stable defense and a versatile attack, the Magpies are securing important points in the battle for a Champions League spot.

Despite recent headlines surrounding Sandro Tonali, who is involved in an investigation into illegal gambling, the team remains focused. Tonali is still available for selection and recently made a major contribution to the team’s success.

Newcastle are expected to line up in a 4-3-3 formation. Eddie Howe is likely to stick with much of the same starting XI that beat Manchester United in the last game. Guimarães, Tonali and Murphy could provide the balance between defense and offense in the midfield.

Defensively, Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles are still missing, so Dan Burn and Fabian Schär are likely to form the center of defense. Lewis Hall is also still unavailable after injuries. On the offensive side, Barnes, Isak and Joelinton are a dangerous trio, with Barnes likely to start again after his gala against Manchester United.

Crystal Palace Form & Bilanz Check

Crystal Palace are also showing increasing form under Oliver Glasner. Although the recent 5-2 defeat at Manchester City looks clear, the Eagles even took an early 2-0 lead. In the end, City came out on top, but Palace took away valuable lessons.

The team had previously shown their strength at home with a 2-1 win in the derby against Brighton and a 1-1 draw at Southampton. In an impressive 3-0 cup win against Fulham and a narrow 1-0 win at Ipswich, Palace shone both offensively and defensively.

Particularly noteworthy is the strong second half: in 80% of the last games, Palace were more successful after the break. Daniel Muñoz, the Colombian full-back with a new contract, not only improved the defensive performance but has already scored six times this season. Maxence Lacroix and Chris Richards are also set to return, while Romain Esse and Matt Turner are likely to be out due to illness.

Crystal Palace are likely to play out in a 3-4-2-1 system, a formation that has given them stability recently. In the back three, Lerma could defend alongside defensive leader Guéhi and Richards.

In midfield, Wharton is expected to replace the injured Doucouré, who will be out for an extended period after knee surgery. Kamada could play alongside him, with Mitchell and Muñoz taking up the wings. Muñoz has not only been convincing defensively recently, but has also made an impact offensively.

In attack, Eze and Sarr are likely to play behind Mateta, who has been scoring regularly this season. However, Glasner is not expected to announce his final lineup until shortly before the game begins.

Newcastle – Crystal Palace head to head & statistics

Newcastle and Crystal Palace have met five times previously, with each side winning twice and drawing once. The most recent of those meetings, in London in November 2024, ended 1-1.

In April 2024, Palace celebrated a 2-0 home win, while Newcastle had already successfully returned the favor with a 4-0 win. Three times in a row, a maximum of 1.5 goals were scored after the break, and in 80% of these encounters, the score was tied at halftime.

It is worth noting that Palace have not scored in the first half in their last five matches against Newcastle. At the same time, Newcastle have not conceded a goal before half-time in this period, which illustrates their defensive strength at the start of matches.
